Breakfast was great. Good portions and cooked to perfection. I've been going here since I was a kid and never have been disappointed.

The classic breakfast ($9.95) consists of a choice of eggs, protein (bacon, sausage, or ham), home fries, and toast. I'm glad to see their scrambled eggs are made with real eggs and not the boxed liquid ones; I could tell from the telltale flecks of white mixed in with the yolk and denser texture. Their bacon was also tasty: crispy, not too salty, and had a nice smoky flavour. If anything, the home fries could use more time on the flat top to develop a crispier crust, but they were still decent and would pair nicely with fried eggs to create a soft hash. I was excited to see the lovely caramelization on the house pancakes ($9.95 for three) but it didn't really translate into flavour. As pancakes go, they're nice and fluffy but also store-bought tasting, especially when served with packaged table syrup. Bethune's plain house burger ($9.95) reminded me of the ones I had in high school at Johnny Andersons. The beef patty is thicker than McDonalds, but also seems to be mixed with flour as it has a softer consistency. Still, it had a nice crust, and was adorned with all the classic fixings: mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, and onion. The French fries are also a step up from the home fries - crispy, hot, and made with real potatoes. The low prices may partially be attributed to Bethune's lean (but not mean) staff. Even on weekends there's usually only one person out front and presumably one chef. Yet, service was efficient, and I've always felt taken care of and welcomed. If you're in Gravenhurst, I'd recommend skipping fast food and support local at Bethune's Bistro instead. While it's more aptly described as a diner or family-style restaurant (as opposed to a bistro), there's a friendly small-town charm to the place and you won't leave broke or hungry. read more

Bethunes was pretty nice. I enjoyed the Eggs Benedict. The hollandaise had the correct mix of tart and creaminess. The coffee was pretty decent. It was everything that I wanted from this type of diner. The person working there was nice. The food was good. I would go back if I was in the area again. read more

Great breakfast on an early Sunday morning. The waiter was super friendly and efficient. A real character who clearly enjoyed his work. The cook made a great breakfast cooked to perfection. Small town type restaurant where the local folk like to go. So pleased we found it! read more

A sucker for classic diners and family-owned restaurants, I would give Bethune's Bistro 3.75/5! I ordered the Fettuccine Alfredo (subbed the bacon and sausage for chicken) and an appetizer sized Caesar Salad. The Caesar Salad was a little overdressed with sauce. The Fettuccine Alfredo was really full of flavour and delicious. Although I prefer my pasta al dente and it was overcooked, I set my expectations extremely low for a local diner. The pasta definitely exceeded my expectations as the sauce was yummy and had a delicious creamy taste. I tried my boyfriend's Haddock Fish and Chips and it was really good - a great level of juiciness and fried, without being overly greasy. His came with fries, coleslaw, and tartar sauce. I wish they gave more tartar sauce for the fish. He said it was one of the best fish and chips he's had! Next time, I would definitely order the fish and chips. The service was nice and prompt. They took us in even though we arrived 30 minutes before closing. The ambience is very homey, as you would expect from a typical diner. read more

Ian has joined the team at the Bethune Bistro and has turned this place around!!! He used to manage the sunset grill at the wharf. I was very worried when my mom suggested we come here due to the past reviews and our own experience with the wait time in the past. But when we walked in and saw Ian. I just knew we would be in good hands!! The sunset grill closed down recently as they couldn't find any cooks. Otherwise that was our original go to place in Gravenhurst. About our meals today: My brother and I had the Philli cheese steak. My mom had the haddock and chips and my dad had the western sandwich. All were brought to our table within 10 minutes and delicious!!! The Philli cheese steak would have been better without so much bread tho - on a wrap or a skinnier bread type. Both rooms were packed so the wait time was very acceptable - also given the fact that he was the only the server!!! The variety of food was awesome! Either full day breakfast items from steak and eggs to pancakes or full entrees, salads, pasta etc. Including what we all had as well as liver and onions, Cajun chicken etc I forgot to take a photo of their menu. Someone should do that - as there is not one online and I like to manage my meals with my fitness pal and know what I can have before I attend a restaurant. But that's just me. Given the circumstances you are presented with and the limited choices you have I would say this place is okay. When you are miles away from modern civilization one can only expect so much. This place is drab. Everything screams of old retirement home (including the crowd); not that there is anything wrong with that. I can see that this was perhaps once a hustling and bustling Chinese eatery of some sort as there are still remnants here and there. However, I am never one to judge a book by it's cover and quite often the crummiest looking places serve the heartiest food. The food is okay I would say. It fills you up and it won't leave a lasting impression for sure. My steak was overcooked but I tasted the effort there. Nicely seasoned and okay char on it. The bread is your typical bread from the grocery store. Omelettes were way overcooked and should be avoided. Chicken tzakziki wasn't what it should be but does remind me of it. The only over-achievement was probably the bbq corn chowder; nice hint of smokiness to it and rice in corn flavour. The price is okay and overall a big OKAY. Stop by if you are hungry but keep expectations low low. read more

Order halibut fish n chips and hot hamburger. None of our food was good. My halibut fried fish maybe the batter gone bad coz it was sour taste. The fish itself was fine. The hamburger was salty with or without gravy. I gave 1 star coz the service wasn't so bad. read more

Good simple food from this small town diner. Menu is small but offers an all day breakfast with all the options. Not much for kids on the menu - but the portions are huge - so splitting is a good idea. Looks like they are slowly upgrading the decor - cool bar and washrooms, but the rest is dated. While its not much to look at inside the Bethune Bistro is a pleasant place to eat and the food is basic but tasty. Based on other reviews I read I decided to order the liver and onions with extra vegetables and wasn't disappointed. My wife ordered the burger with fries and also enjoyed it. She finished her meal with a slice of blueberry pie with whipped cream and didn't leave anything on her plate. Service was excellent and we didn't have to wait long for our food to come out. It was under thirty bucks (before tip). Overall a good, reasonably priced, no frills dining experience. read more

Have been here twice, had the halibut both times. Easily the best fish and chips I've had in a long time!!!! It's quiet, nice atmosphere.
