I decided going to…read moreservices wasn't really my thing while I am at university but for the high holidays, I bought a student ticket and went to the majority of the services. I actually live just a few blocks from the synagogue and walk past it often, so it was a pleasure to go inside and check it out for myself. For the little bit that I saw, it was comfortable, traditional and had a slightly mixed bag of synagogue goers. The services I attended for the holidays were mostly held at the JCC on Bloor, so if you don't mind sitting under giant ventilators in a basketball gym for a few hours, then it's fine. Services were pretty enjoyable even though I am not religious. It's conservative/masorti, egalitarian (so you can sit wherever you want), you may wear whatever you want (within reason, of course). The shul does ask that you (yes, you too, ladies) cover your head and they have a selection of kippahs. The rabbi and everyone else up on the bimah were really good at what they do and kept my attention. First Narayever seems pretty socially active and on Wednesdays (I think) they have a little farmer's market of sorts in their front yard during nicer weather. They're committed to social action, so if you're looking for a way to get involved, maybe it'd be a good way to get your foot in the door.
