However, as time went on, it became apparent that the senior pastor of the church cannot keep her personal political viewpoint out of her sermons. I find this to be very unprofessional, as well as, just disappointing on a personal level. I realized that First United Church was not a good fit for me , and that I now will have to find another church in Bloomington to attend services. The pastor is very biased and partisan in her political beliefs.

They are open and affirming, progressive and everything I love in a socially justice minded-church. The lead pastor Dr Rev Jack Skiles is talented, but doesn't take himself too seriously which I think is an underrated gift in ministry. The Congregation has a nice mix of age, culture, political opinions, & ethnicities. They bring Community involved to a whole new level because I see them setting high standards for radical Christian hospitality in many areas. Their choir and music is a bit old-fashioned but beautiful no less. Don't expect any projectors or praise music but the hymns and the talent in the choir are wonderful. If you are moderate or left of center, I highly recommend this church! Their strong civil rights history can be read online at their website. They have many members with American Baptist or you UCC identities. Peace be with you as you look for a great church!

My family has been attending Cornerstone for several months, and we love it. The people are…read morewelcoming and have embraced us as part of the family. We've made great friends in a short time. The kids program is really great. My kids enjoy learning about the Bible, the relevant lessons, the activities, the prizes, and the summer camp (which they're going to for the first time this year). The music is contemporary and deep without being showy and flashy. The teaching is great! The senior pastor is articulate and really boils each sermon down to relevant take aways no matter where a person is on their journey. All in all, this is a growing community that we have enjoyed becoming a part of.

The worship service has a rotating group that ministers in music (contemporary songs and hymns) and the reading of scriptures and prayers. The congregation participates and lay ministers and elders share in the communion meditation. Pastor Marty delivers his sermon in a relaxed way that holds your attention. Pastor Virgil seems to know and remember the entire church, even the returning visitors. I'd guess that there are several hundred in attendance. The members are true servants for the Lord!

This may have been the first contemporary building in Columbus, but it was also one of the first contemporary-looking churches in the country. If you picture a cathedral and then see this building, you'll realize how revolutionary it was. The inside is beautiful; the sanctuary all made of wood, the cross off center, and amazing light fixtures throughout. It feels welcoming, interesting and cutting edge. Definitely take a look inside!
