Great place! We passed through town from out of state and decided to give this place a try- server told us we could try anything on the menu and it would be incredible, he was right! Wedge salad, corned beef sandwich, ribeye sandwich and the garlic parm chicken sandwich were all cooked perfectly. The place was nice inside and very clean. 10 stars!! You must stop and have a meal at Bernard's if you're able to. The only people that touch the food are the married couple that owns the restaurants, and they only have about three or four other servers and that's the only staff. Everything on the menu was incredibly delicious and full of flavor. I think I fainted over the short rib. I'm not usually a fan of Rockefeller oysters, but I am so glad I got them. I was traveling through Roanoke for work, but may make an extra trip just to come back here. Such a cozy perfect dinner spot. read more

I went here by myself, and ordered the Parmesan, garlic chicken sandwich. There weren't too many people eating there, so plenty of tables were open, but there was only one server and service was very slow. Some people left before even ordering because they were tired of waiting, but I waited it out. Overall the sandwich was pretty good, certainly on the more expensive side for a chicken sandwich though. I was happy it came with fries & a pickle though!! I also was very tired & forgot my credit card on the table after adding the tip, but they took great care of it for me. They wouldn't even confirm or deny if a card was left there until I confirmed all the details, & I needed my ID to pick it up when I was visiting Roanoke again the following week. read more

This is the kind of place where you become thankful for Yelp! We were driving through on a cross-country drive (DC to LA) and started looking for a place to eat. Bernard's came up with good Yelp reviews so this is where we ended up. Wow...this place is great! I tried all four dishes brought to our table as well as the dessert. All of them were excellent. Beef short rib was cooked to perfection. Delicate but not mushy. The whipped potatoes were just buttery enough without being oily and the brussels sprouts were the best I'd ever eaten; soft but not mushy with a lovely touch of white pepper. The warm spinach salad might initially startle you by how sweet it is but once you're past that it's lovely! The slight cooking of the spinach makes the leaves delicate and not at all bitter. I'd order this without hesitation. The cottage pie was not only ENORMOUS but also delicious. This is easily a sharable dish for two. Don't take its enormity as a sign of it being indelicate as its flavors are subtle and tasty. Famished? Order this thing. The burger was a stand out too. Clearly the meat is ground here at the restaurant and the chefs know not to over handle it in making the patties. The burger tastes like beef which is the point, right?! Last tip: save room for dessert. The banana & butterscotch pudding is easily the best dessert I've eaten in the past five years. It's quite sweet so if that's your jam then this is the dessert for you. All of this amazing food accompanied by quaint decor and great service (Jimmy rocked it) makes for an awesome outing. Service was so slow even though there was no one in the restaurant. It took 40 minutes for us to get our food. The fish and chips were bland and the dry. How do you mess up fried fish? It definitely tastes like they put the hours into this that great ones take. Wedge salad was good. Only complaint is too much dressing, but we gathered all the blue cheese together. Great job! This place was such a treat, it makes me want to come back and spend more time in Roanoke exploring their interesting downtown and the surrounding lovely terrain! As it stands for this occasion, we were just passing through on our way up I-81 headed toward Baltimore, when we were hungry for a meal. Knowing that Roanoke had to have some delicious local gems, one of my passengers took out their trusty Yelp app, and found this highly rated place just off the highway in downtown. It was Friday night, and downtown was very lively. We thought there was a good chance we'd need to wait. We arrived to the restaurant, and though tables were open, they like so many places are struggling with staff shortages. Still, the host was able to seat us after just a few minutes, which was fantastic. Our waiter immediately brought us waters and after a short time returned to ask if we wanted anything besides water, and/or if we were ready to order. I saw an order of their "frickles" at another table and asked for that, then the three of us made our normal food orders. Unfortunately, the order for fried pickles was forgotten, but that ended up being of very little consequence, as our meal was so delicious and filling... we really didn't need any more food. It did take awhile to receive the food, but again, this is a small kitchen and staffing is an issue currently. All good things are worth the wait. Regardless of being stretched thin, the kitchen put out a high quality delicious product. Orderes around the table were the "Irishman" which is a reuben with a very thick slice of house made corned beef as opposed to multiple thin slices. Also ordered were "Cottage Pie" which is their shepherd's pie, and fish & chips which were not given a clever name. I had occasion to try all three, but the person who ordered the cottage pie and I had arranged to go half and half on our orders before they came. This was a wise decision by both of us. First of all, and I don't want to exaggerate, this was the best corned beef I have ever enjoyed. Slicing it thick like that only works if you've cooked it perfectly... and boy, did they ever. The meat was tender and juicy, the fat had rendered to a point where you could have easily spread it like butter, and the salt and spices on the rub... chefs kiss. This sandwich was perfect in every way, and while it has been awhile since my last visit to Katz deli in NY, this is every bit as good as that per my memory. As if that weren't enough, the Cottage Pie was incredible. The filling, and especially the brown gravy, huge depth of flavor, perfect texture. The creamy potatoes on top were not only artfully presented, but also light, fluffy, and just right in the taste department. I was happy I invested in half this dish, as it would be a shame to miss it. Finally, the fish and chips I just got a little bite of, but the fish was battered well, tender and flaky inside, and served with a nice house made tartar sauce which I usually don't go in for, but this one was uniquely good. It was but a distant memory that the fried pickles were forgotten at this point. We were all perfectly full, and ready to sing this place's praises on Yelp. What went well, you ask? Everything! My wife loves crabcakes (she and every other Marylander) so I went in to test it out. The chefs are the owners, and they are professional and very talented and hardworking. I got a crabcake sandwich. It was excellent. It was mostly crab. My buddy got fish and chips. He loved it - gone in moments. The fries are really good too. So I took my wife in. She got the crabcake sammich and loved it. I got a cuban sandwich. It was the best. Absolutely loved this place! One of my favorites is their tomatoes salad which has blackened grilled chicken as well as pesto and mozzarella. I also love how friendly the staff is and the place is also really clean which is a huge plus. Those of you who have read my reviews know how important the bathrooms are for me lol so I was happy to see the bathroom was really clean as well. Ironically, they would be even better if they were a bit smaller (4 oz.?) with 1 oz. less filler. A little peeved that the $39 price was $3 more than what was printed on the menu. Don't do that. But they were kind enough to still take my order, I felt really bad lol. The ambience inside the restaurant was really nice, clearly we didn't stay long since I got to go order. I wouldn't say it's a place for kids, but def a good place for date night or to grab some drinks. I order the Texan burger and it was amazing. I couldn't even finish it all. It was a lot of meat. Having recently moved to Roanoke and as a chef/ food stylist/photographer, I'm very picky about restaurants and food and service. I also have celiac so I have to be careful where I eat and how they cook the food. A friend took me to Bernards downtown in Roanoke and I have to say I rarely do this but this was five stars. The decor is welcoming the outside is lovely they have outside dining . the menu is elegant pub food and I had a beautiful pear mocktail and an amazing Reuben with a side of risotto because I have celiac I couldn't have fries. They also were kind enough to use my gluten-free bread I bought. I hope soon they carry their own. My friend had a burger and it looked amazing and they even stamp their own name on the bun which was such a lovely artistic touch and everything was in the details and the service was wonderful. I highly recommend this pub and the only thing I would change is not having TVs (but it is a pub ,so I understand. If you're downtown in Roanoke do yourself a favor and check out Bernards. read more

OMG if your ever in the area make sure you check this place out the wife and I were in the area for a funeral and we had a late luncheon. I went on Yelp around 7:30 and a lot of places were getting ready to close I found Bernard's and the yelper gave great reviews boy were they rite excellent food!! We walked in the door and this excellent lady greeted us I joked with her asking about if the food was good she joked back with me. We sat at the bar the the bartender was also very helpful explaining drinks and food. We both ordered the warm spinach salad that was one of the best I've ever had the dressing was not to sweet just rite. Then we had for dessert butterscotch banana pudding I don't care to eat a banana only in a few dished luckily the banana was very fresh and firm or I wouldn't have eaten it. Please note this review should be more of a 4.5 stars and not a 4 but there were enough issues to make it to where I could not give it a 5. The restaurant is on the small side (maybe 15-20 tables - mix of tables and high tops and a bar). As such they have two servers doing both bartending and table service. This also means, you can not sit at the bar and wait as they treat the bar as a table. The servers are on point and provide good service but they are busy and at times service can be slow. We did not have a reservation so we ended up waiting about 30 minutes for a party of two. However, they do take reservations. The food is amazing though. Both my wife and I got burgers with wings as an appetizer. The wings were big and meaty and they let you pick two sauces as opposed to one (we got Thai sweet chili and garlic Parmesan.) My wife got the backyard burger and I got the steakhouse burger add caramelized onions. Both burgers were massive and cooked to order. The steakhouse burger has a lattice of brown sugar bacon that adds a nice sweet flavor to the burger. Both burgers came with fresh cut fries. My chief complaint is that I asked for the onions to be on the burger and they were not because someone forgot to put them on there. To the businesses credit they brought them to me without me asking but they charged me a $1.50 for a side that I initially did not get. Also, bathrooms were super clean. Which is always nice. The issue with the bill coupled with the overworked servers and slow service just makes me feel like I can't give them a 5 but I would definitely go back. read more

Bernard's gets SIX STARS! Bernard's ambiance was cool, dark, quiet but inviting! Our hostess (turned waitress), Rachel, was so gracious, helpful and patient. After getting our drinks, she took our order which came out surprisingly fast. My son ended up getting the fish and chips with cod and homemade fries and I ended up getting a piping HOT bowl of French onion soup and their Cottage Pie (neither of which I could finish)! While I'm not a connoisseur of French onion soup, I have had it about 20 different times in 20 different places, including Korea, Japan, Washington state, California, Hawaii, and Texas. Bernard's version beat them all with its robust flavor, texture, homemade bread croutons and a big slice of mozzarella on top! Simple but special! Though other restaurants choose to offer shepherds pie made with lamb, Bernard's cottage pie is made with fresh beef, corn potatoes, green beans, peas, carrots mixed in a delicious brown beef sauce with a cheese-topped mashed potatoes. The best of comfort food made by accomplished and capable chefs (who also happen to own the joint)!!! What a delightful spot! We were there for lunch and had the crab cake sandwich and a Reuben. The crab cake was mine and it was the best I've ever eaten.. and I lived in Maryland for 25 years so I've had a lot of crab cakes! The remoulade sauce was a light subtle citrus and it just enhanced the crab cake and all of it's lump crabmeat. The branded brioche bun was adorable and delicious too.
