I have two children who've been at Berlin Metropolitan School (BMS) for almost three years now, one in primary, the other in secondary school.
Summary:
They are very happy there, and they're getting excellent education.
Some disclaimers first:
This school may not be ideal for those who are looking for luxury for their children. If your idea of good education is to have greenery, ozone-purified swimming pools, a planetarium, or some other similar swanky facilities, you won't find them on this concrete block in downtown Berlin. The BMS took over the premises from a public school building, built in what was East Germany in the 1980s.
It's also true that, with the extended construction project, there has been noise and dust. Again, for parents who want their children to grow up in a pretty bubble, BMS won't be an option.
The real deal:
If, however, you're OK with having your children in a somewhat rough, edgy, Berlin kind of place, smack in downtown Berlin, in an urban neighbourhood with awesome galleries, bookstores (there's a French language bookstore right across the road from school on Linienstrasse, for example), restaurants (for the luxury loving people, there are three restaurants with Michelin stars within 5 minutes walking from the school, plus a number of other great options for everyone), cafés and the like, you should seriously consider BMS.
The quality of teaching is generally very good, with some teachers being in the "inspiring and exciting" category, plus the combination of offering the IB diploma at the end, IGCSE at the end of Grade 10, IB primary years program for the younger ones, and all the requirements for German accreditation at the same time will give your children the flexibility you need.
The best thing about BMS is, in my opinion, the convivial atmosphere and a very friendly environment. The place is truly international and, although there is a significant percentage (about 40% overall, I believe) of German children, there's no sense of "us and them" sometimes prevalent in similar international schools. Both children and parents can make friends easily, and there's no feeling of being left out.
This is a private school and there are fees to pay, but there is also income scaling, i.e. fees are based on the family income, and they're reasonable in comparison with similar schools.
Conclusion:
Overall, in spite of some organizational problems and construction, I'd give BMS serious consideration if friendly is more important than glitzy, and if you value being part of a community more than being entitled. read more
