I usually don't write reviews because I only commit to the hotels that I stay in. I am currently an Elite member of the Marriott Hotel and an Aldon member at the Ritz Carlton. However, my recent experience at the Berlin Marriott Hotel (Potsdamer platz) has forced me to write this review, where unfortunately I must criticize the professionalism of the staff.
My husband and I had checked in on Sunday evening and were given the room # 971. On Monday night, I returned to the room at 10.19 pm and put away my handbag, watch, jewelry and other accessories and went to take a shower. My husband was in the lobby at that time. When I was taking a shower, I thought I heard someone come into the room and I figured it must have been my husband. I was in the bathroom for around 20 mins. My husband came in around 11 pm and called out to me at which point I was already coming out of the bathroom. We went to sleep that night.
The next morning when we woke up, I noticed that one of my rings was on the floor near the bed. I looked around for my watch (an expensive Rolex, a gift from my husband) but couldn't find it. Neither could I find my diamond ring (2.5 karats). When I told my husband, he called room service to inquire about the items. In the meantime I realized that my wallet and handbag were also missing, which had all my credit cards and 500 euros. At this point, I was panicking and we went down to the reception where the manager talked to us and called the police on our behalf.
I have been informed that the police is going to investigate the matter. However, right now, I am still getting over the shock. More than the loss of valuables, i am more traumatized by the fact that someone had entered my room while I was showering in a 5-star hotel that boasts about security and service.
If I had come out to see if my husband had entered the room, I may very well have been injured. In fact, it is also the violation of my privacy that has traumatized me. I have never experienced anything of this sort, especially at a high quality establishment such as this hotel. I really hope that the hotel has security footage of who may have entered my room and I hope they share it with the police, although they didn't show it to us.
Moreover, I was deeply hurt by the reaction of the staff when we informed them of the mishap. While the manager was courteous enough to call the police, he did not extend any condolences on his or the hotel's behalf. Rather I felt like they were not taking this seriously at all. The least I would have hoped for was some effort on their part to find out what happened or offer to look at the security footage to see what happened.
It appeared to us that he was shifting the blame on us for not locking the door properly. I mean this is no Airbnb or a cheap motel, this is the Marriott hotel, an international chain of hotels boasting world-class service. If we cannot expect a simple apology for a robbery, what should we be expecting from the staff of a 5-star hotel?
I am now having my own share of anxiety and issues. But this incident has traumatized me to the point where my husband, who was in Berlin for work, had to drive me back to Frankfurt because I was too afraid to travel alone. I felt physically sick and emotionally wired to the point where I had to take meds to relieve the anxiety, per my physician's prescription. This is certainly no joke and it was compounded by the victim-blaming attitude of the manager of the hotel.
If the staff cannot extend their courtesy to a troubled human being, one must question how exactly the hotel is training them to handle their clients. I honestly hope that the hotel authorities consider this incidence and their staff's treatment of the situation and towards me, so that no other guests in the future have to suffer similar emotional trauma.
There is no way left for me to return to this hotel in the future. read more
