Perhaps though, you wouldn't expect the quality of food by looking at the outside of the pub. Never has the phrase, "don't judge a book by its cover," been more true. What is generally nice about this place is that they do a few things really well, rather than having huge selections of mediocre tat. This starts with the beer - a choice of four very nice ales, we went for the Dark Star "Hophead" a golden pale ale, which has a lovely full flavour with a hint of honey and elder-flower. The menu here changes often, almost daily, depending on what is available and the chef decides to make. Our starters were ham and apple terrine with a lovely pickle, chicken and liver paté with sourdough bread & homemade chutney, Selsy crab and salmon cakes. All fantastic. Not only did it all taste fantastic but the presentation is worth the price alone. You can see the menu in the photos I've added. For mains I had hanger steak with purple sprouting broccoli - incredible melt in the mouth texture that worked so well with the broccoli and a tasty sauce. Everyone else had fish was being at the coast is a great choice. My youngest daughter had hake in a beer batter which was so, so light and crispy. My wife and eldest daughter had pan fried fish (trout and turbot) with mash. Seriously, I could have eaten all the mains myself - I've not seen my wife finish a meal so quick, ok I kept stealing bits of her plate because it was rather yummy. I couldn't reach my daughters plate so easily. Desserts were equally well presented and equally tasty. The highlight was the chocolate brownie that was rich and gooey it the right proportions. The rummed raisins in my sable biscuit chocolate cake were fantastic. These lovely fruits just kept popping in my mouth. My eldest had the raspberry meringue which thankfully wasn't too sweet, although the meringue was a little harder than I expect it was obviously made in the kitchen as it had a lovely chewy inside rather than being all air. Overall, a brilliant meal. If you were eating this in London you would be paying twice as much as you are here. While you would probably only get half of the meal in London too. This is top quality food with portions you can live on. Go here now before the word gets out.

They have 6 real ales on tap in this establishment and pour a pint of Harveys that could rival any Lewes pub! Food wise, I had a beautiful Sussex cheddar ploughmans that was not only huge but really tasty with plenty of fresh, crusty bread to go with it. It was raining when I was there but the garden looked absolutely huge so we're definitely going back when the weather gets better.

The service was attentive but not pushy; the wait between courses was reasonable as were the portion sizes and prices But, there's a but. I chose the chilli burger...the menu made it sound really good, but that was not reality...the first bite was an eye-opener shock...the hot chilli jam, while spicy (I have to say I'm not sure about that), and spread thickly on the bottom bun, was straight from the fridge and stone cold, thus inedible - compare & contrast with the burger. Hmm another issue...the burger was seriously over processed so that rather than solidly formed pressed meat, it was verging on a more over minced-like soft patty. Ok but not something to return for. Warm beer, warm flat lager. Very expensive wine. If they want to turn it into a 'gastropub' then get a chef that can cook not a cook that can't. Lose all your regulars which is slowly happening. Get the place back to how it was when Mervyn and Daphne were there for all that time. It worked for them. No further visits necessary. 47 years of getting it right, down the drain.
