This week I was invited to play one of the oldest german golf clubs, the GC Kitzeberg in Kiel…read more Apparently, it is the oldest golf club in Germany founded by germans. It was established in 1902 and is also founding member of the german golf association DGV. The club is situated in the terminal moraine landscape formed in the last ice age. Unusual for the rather flat terrain of northern germany, this course really appeals to the hill climber in you. The course originally consisted out of nine holes, the back nine have been added in the year 2000. So the front nine show the good old spirit of a parkland course with some drastic elevation changes ans mostly narrow fairways guarded by trees left and right. Six of the nine holes on the front nine are doglegs, so a solid iron play comes in more handy than a bombing drive. The back nine - the newer holes - feature a more open landscape and a less hilly layout. The holes still are demanding and interesting, like the 16th, a 560m long par 5, tunring into a dogleg left at the end. You need two excellent shots and a lie to the right of the fairway to have a decent shot at the green. I had a lie on the left side of the fairway and had to clear various trees on my way to the green that is also protected by water. The most interesting finishing hole I played so far has to be #18 in Kitzeberg. It is a double dogleg left, narrow with water in the middle on both sides of the fairway and uphill towards the end. It is basically wrapped around the clubhouse. A spectacular finish to a great golf round. Greenfees are 40,00 EUR on weekdays and 50,00 EUR on weekends. It is money well spent on an interesting golf course.
