We had reservations at 6:30 & we're rudely greeted at the hostess stand telling us there was an hour and half wait even with reservations due to staffing issues. There was no attempt to apologize or contact us prior to our arrival just a blank stare and "you wanna wait???" Based upon other reviews this appears to be just another day at Benihana Memphis. This star is for the food. The service experience was the worst I've experienced in my 60 yrs of dining out. We had 6:30p reservation for 9... 6 adults, 3 kids under 11. We were seated at a hibachi table right away, and Jeannie, our waitress, took drink orders. We didn't order appetizers because we ordered the five course meals. (Except for two California rolls for the kids which came within 15 mins) We are gathered for my daughter's 50th birthday. We chose Benihana's to make it a fun, interactive experience for the family. Instead we waited 2 hours for our first course.. soup. According to the restaurant manager,There was no lettuce delivery that day, so there was no salad to be served, and no alternative offered. All I asked for was a few more veggies. No one cleaned up the tables .. I moved the soup bowls to a counter to clear up our table. I spoke to the manager, she said she would take some thing off the bill for the delay. we sat there for another 30 to 40 minutes before the chef, artis, came to our table amidst applause! We were all starving. He dazzled us and entertained the kids with his fire and implement handling. So almost 3 hours after we sat down, we were served fried rice, with no silverware!!! Chef had to go back to the kitchen for my tuna, at which point I said cancel it, but he said it was too late. After all were served, my daughter, the birthday girl said she did not get her scallops. Oops, again chef went back in the kitchen and came back with one scallop. Apparently the others were still frozen! The kitchen had this order for three hours... There's no excuse. Bill finally comes .. over $300, less manager discount of $78. Then I notice a charge of $4.50 each for fried rice. I thought rice was included in the 5 course meal (which ended up being 4 courses without salad!) so fried rice shud hv been substituted. My daughters meal with no (one sad) scallop shud hv been heavily discounted, service was shoddy.. no clean up of soup dishes, no silverware, repeat returns to kitchen for missing items, etc. SO taking $78 off the bill was insulting . I understand that when staff don't show up it's out of the managers control but when we showed up for our 6:30 reservation we shud hv been asked I f we were willing to wait 2 hours.. we wud hv said NO. We waited almost 5 minutes for someone to come to the front to ask us how many people were in our party. A lady, who appeared to pregnant, dryly asked how may she help us. We told her we had a table of 11 and she walked away. She didn't acknowledge the number of guests in our party, didn't say how long the wait was, simply said nothing and walked away. We waited a few more minutes before a server came out and asked had we been helped. Someone in my party told her we asked for a table and the first lady we spoke to walked away, the second lady was very nice and said we probably wouldn't have wait staff to assist us, but she would double check and get back to us. After she left, we collectively decided that based on the RUDE customer service we had received from the first employee, this wasn't a place we would be choosing to spend our money. We made a reservation and was seated pretty quickly only to be left a good 20 -25 minutes before a server came to take our drink order. The chef did a great job cooking our food. Everything tasted good. The server was not enthusiastic at all. Never picked up our dirty soup and salad bowls. Never refilled our empty drink glasses until we were paying our check. All this bad service had nothing to do with the restaurant being busy, because it was not. We can only image the disfunction at night during prime times. There were other workers standing around who could've pitched in to help out. It's obvious you need real management presence to oversee operations. The manager is the problem, rather than being proactive, he delegates without following through to see if customer complaints are resolved. Over the years, we have visited Benihana Restaurants all over the world. This Benihana is by far the worst. The food was generally tasty, but not prepared as requested. As there were only 4 diners at the table, the servings of fried rice and veggies were enormous. The cook, (I refuse to call him a "chef"), left the tails on the shrimp added to the fried rice. Ordered 2 beers 9:00 pm, was served 2 beers and a flight of saki at 9:15 pm refused flight different server said too bad and left it on table. It was not consumed. We tried to get the attention of the manager and asked about our order. He disappeared for 20 mns. And avoided us at all costs. We cancelled our orders and we were charged full price for everything. When checking out a server approached myself and my friend whom I had met there and told us "it isn't her fault" pointing to the person checking us out. I let her know that server never served us. She then told us how our server was in the back crying. How the kitchen lost her ticket and a few other excuses of why we were not taken care of well. The manager NEVER came to our table. NEVER addressed us or our concerns and AVOIDED our table at all costs. I have never been so disappointed in a restaurant in it's entirety before but now I am. I have never been to a restaurant that had no clean silverware. A bus person was wearing a red hook restaurant shirt. The bartender didn't know "where the wine is kept". Until my friend showed him. Our server Tericka was sweet and trying. I think she was set up to fail by poor management and coworkers who don't care. She was definitely new to food service and had no knowledge of how to do her job efficiently. I felt very sorry for her. This restaurant was highly recommended by my friends. We have been so excited for weeks. Disappointed does not cover the feelings I have for this experience. When meeting friends out for dinner after a stressful week at work. I shouldn't be bothered with all the junk I was dealt. We all left hungry and at least $60 poorer. The absolute disregard for patrons in the restaurant by the manager makes me sick. He visited other tables. Where the people were happy and eating. But completely ignored the table with 2 parties. 4 adults and 1 adult with 2 young children. As we left at 9:30 pm the chef showed up and the kids finally got fed. Unacceptable. Just unacceptable. The children and adult were served their drinks by the 1 server who only served certain people and our end was completely ignored. The looks she gave us let us know not to ask her for anything.
