This was the main reason that I made a trip up to Bendigo for a weekend, not just because I like art galleries (which I do), but because they had an exhibition of Greek artifacts which would instantly catch my attention, as well as a booking for an entire weekend. It also gave me a good excuse to go and wonder around the town just to get the vibe of the place. I must say that the Greek exhibition was outstanding, not so the other exhibition on Victorian underwear (I really don't like fashion). However, the gallery also had a pretty decent art collection as well, with paintings both from Australia and abroad (but no Picasso, though there were a couple of impressionists). The incense burners from China were also pretty cool, as where the neo-classical statues out the back, which depicted scenes from Ovid's Metamorphosis. read more

Bendigo art gallery is a great space as it recently had a redevelopment. We were lucky enough to see the 'Imagining Ned' exhibit. With artists on display like Sir Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd, Adam Cullen, Juan Davila and Norman Lindsay. Amazing art displayed on whether some like it or not, an Australian icon. You can also see it's collection which includes painting, sculpture, ceramics, decorative arts, photography, works on paper, and Australian art. This really is worth a trip to Bendigo to experience. read more

Regional art galleries are always fun to explore. When Bendigo pulled a big draw card with the Marilyn Monroe exhibition, I knew I had to pay a visit. A (relatively) quick 1.5 hour drive from Melbourne, it is well worth a day trip. I attended on a Saturday, which was super busy. Upon entering the gallery, we were told we might not gain entry to the exhibition until later in the day, but luckily we were fortunate enough to purchase our tickets and enter immediately. I recommend purchasing your tickets online prior to arrival to avoid disappointment when more popular exhibits are showing. The space itself is very modern, and well set out. You'd be forgiven for forgetting that your were in a country town. There is a gorgeous courtyard outside which you can explore, and also a cafe at the rear of the gallery where you can enjoy a refreshment after you exit the exhibition. Parking around the gallery is difficult on the weekends, so you may need to park and walk for a little bit. It is only a short stroll from the CBD, and plenty of cafes surround the gallery as well- great location. read more
