Other than at breakfast never saw anyone who worked there nor did anyone answer the phone at the posted number. Had a hard time getting new sheets and towels. No one to check us in. Breakfast was coffee or tea, oatmeal with raisins (except for the two days with no raisins) and a casserole, except for the day with no casserole and a small "fruit" service which was usually Mellon slice. I understand some people had a worse experience than we did. Also relatively expensive.

It's a few buildings down from the Amphitheater, so you can enjoy the evening symphony easily from the porch or terrace. Also, the entire staff was kind and helpful. They really tried to accommodate the guests, but there was this sense that these gals were quite fearful of screwing up. On the downside, the room was straightened up, but it didn't feel clean - especially post-pandemic clean. The room we stayed in had 1-1/2 bathrooms - both very small with no room to hold personal belongings. The shower experience was no better than you'd find at a campground. The amenities were cheap and never replenished, so we ended up buying shampoo, conditioner, and body wash at the plaza store. The floor wasn't level, evidenced by our roller bags rolling around on their own. The bed was way too soft and uncomfortable. There was no airflow in the room and there was no way to control the air conditioning. The windows were permanently shut. Despite the Spencer's charm and history, we won't be staying here again.

It has its own private entrance and porch, and it's located right next to the Amphitheater. One of our favorite parts of the week is sitting on the porch in the evening and listening to the concerts without ever leaving the room. We still love the Athenaeum for its history, charm, and unbeatable location. Being able to purchase our Chautauqua gate passes through the hotel is another nice perk. They're printed and waiting for us when we check in, making arrival quick and easy. So why did I lower my rating from five stars to four? Housekeeping has changed noticeably since our first visit. During our week-long stay, the room was never actually cleaned. Towels were replaced and the trash was emptied, but the floors weren't cleaned, the bed linens weren't changed, and the room was never refreshed beyond the basics. We also ran into a maintenance issue. Although the shampoo, conditioner, and body wash dispensers in the shower were full, none of them worked. We ended up buying shampoo and conditioner from the Plaza store and relying on the bar soap provided by the hotel. Neither issue ruined our stay, and we'll absolutely be back. But for a hotel of this caliber, I expect housekeeping and basic room maintenance to be better than what we experienced this year.

I stayed at the Athenaeum July 19-25. Before arriving I called to inquire whether there would be a…read morehairdryer and iron in the room and was assured that there would be. It did not occur to me to ask whether there would be a mirror in the room, as I've never been in a hotel that didn't have one. When I found that, aside from the small bathroom mirror located far above my height, there was no full-length mirror in the room, I asked about this at the front desk. I was told that they would see if they had a mirror that could be installed. When nothing happened, I inquired again and was told that the hotel had no other mirrors. Apparently, some rooms have mirrors and some don't and this seems to be fully acceptable to the management of the Athenaeum. I got no apology and was, in fact, made to feel like my request was unreasonable. If I were managing the hotel, I would think it worthwhile to send a staffer to the nearest hardware or dollar store to purchase a full length mirror and install it in the $400 deluxe double room. Total cost: less than $20 and a half hour time. Furthermore, the prefab plastic shower stall lacked a grab bar or even a shower mat. Given the average age and mobility of guests at the hotel, this seems like an accident (and liability suit) waiting to happen. I tried sending this as feedback directly to the hotel, but could not get to a link or contact info that would have allowed me to do so.

Chautauqua Institution - These draft horses are so friendly, sweet, happy, and well trained! They LOVE the snow, pulling the carriage, and meeting people.

If you've never been, Chautauqua is unlike anywhere we've traveled. It's a gated community on Chautauqua Lake filled with historic homes, beautiful gardens, walking paths, and a summer calendar packed with lectures, concerts, theater, classes, and other events. There's always something happening, but it never feels rushed. One of our favorite things to do is simply wander the grounds. Every street seems to have another beautiful porch, garden, or historic building waiting around the corner. We also love walking along the lake in the morning and ending the day with a concert at the Amphitheater. My biggest piece of advice? Don't overschedule yourself. Of course, attend the lectures and performances that interest you, but also leave plenty of time to explore. Some of our favorite memories have come from slowing down, sitting on a porch, or discovering another quiet corner of the Institution. I've included lots of photos because it's hard to capture the charm of Chautauqua with words alone.

Lovely grounds. Good cultura events (plays, operas, concerts)…read more I went during Climate Change week. The lecturers were knowledgeable and presented well. But much of what they said was preaching to the choir. This audience was already well versed in the perils of climate change. A ridiculous and hypocritical regulation was the restriction on entering any venue with a bag larger than 5X8 inches that was not transparent. This required thousands of people to acquire plastic bags and backpacks (many bought in the Chatauqua shops) all while hearing about the damage being done by overconsumption of plastic. What made the requirement especially outrageous is that if a number of items are placed in a plastic bag or backpack it's impossible to see all items inside so this was significantly less effective than the search of opaque bags usually done at theatres. The requirement was not always enforced. However, when a security guard refused me entrance because I had a canvas bag, I went back to my room and stuffed the entire bag with its contents info a plastic bag. I was then allowed to enter the amphitheatre with no problem. Ridiculous! The Chatauqua website is very user unfriendly. When I asked about submitting a suggestion to the management, I was given a sheet which directed me to a "link" to a survey. It was extremely difficult to find the link but when I did, I got a message that the survey had expired. The sheet of instructions also said that I would receive an email survey but that never happened. So I've been unable to convey these complaints directly to Chatauqua. The map of the Chatauqua facilities is extremely difficult to follow. Like the website, it seems designed to make new visitors to the Insitution feel unwelcome.
