So we decided to give this place a try. My grandfather was admitted two weeks ago. He left the hospital and went straight here. He had some strength returning and just needed a bit more physical therapy for about a week to be on a good path. When dropping him off, we already felt that this place was not up to par. It was dingy, appeared to be in need of a good cleaning, and we noticed that there wasn't a remote or call button for my grandfather to press if he needed help with anything. Going against our gut, we left him there and figured we'd ask him how the night was and could always take him out the next day if it was as rough as we thought it might be. He fell during the night. He said he was lying on the floor waiting for help for about 30 minutes before anyone noticed. On top of that, we found out that in the 12 hours he was at this facility, no one gave him his medicines. He requires about 12 of them -- each more important than the next. Lastly, he has Leukemia. Yet was placed in a room with a roommate. It's common knowledge that immune systems are low with such a cancer. Yet, the roommate didn't wear a mask nor did any of the staff. If another facility is an option, I'd recommend trying that one instead as my grandfather is back in the hospital after one night at this incompetent facility and has lost all the gains he struggled for a month to achieve. He was so close to going home with his strength and abilities.

The Wye Valley building seems comfortable enough but there are some glaring issues. 1) The meals are not very healthy or satisfying. For the price that is paid, I would expect fresher food, more variety, more flavor (I have eaten there myself a few times.) More importantly, the meals don't seem to follow appropriate dietary guidelines for seniors with health issues, i.e. most seniors. There was a brief period when the staff had a dietician that was making a real effort to make sure the food was tasty, well presented and appropriately nutritional for the individuals. But now, the food is not very good. My mother tells me about other residents complaining about the food, but are afraid to speak up. 2) The second elevator has been inoperable for months, because of needed repairs. However, and this is on Brookfield, an inspection has not yet been completed, it seems like it's been out of service most of the year. 3) Although the building is for independent living, seniors still need support and stimulation. There is a small game room and a room with an exercise bike. The staff I have encountered do well with the resources they have, but it seems like more interactive activities could be added - things that are a little more engaging and lively - that would be appropriate for an independent living situation.

Had a great time with my 30 day respite from earlier this year. The residents are very friendly and…read morethe staff more so.

My father (brought in fairly good condition) was here for less than 48 hrs, and had to go to ER…read morebecause he got very sick (septic) here. We demanded a dr see him and their own dr sent him to the ER, because he was dying. Thank god she came in, because I don't think he would have lasted the night. We were trying to get him transferred out (which they argued with us) and we demanded their medical staff look at him immediately and take his vitals, because he seemed to be getting much weaker. He said to me, "I want to leave here. They don't exercise me or get me out of bed much; they don't help me eat; I'm lying all day in my poop, and I'm getting weaker. I feel like an imposition on them." The staff avoids helping--they look away when you approach them for help. They are very very very understaffed. Infection control standards are not practiced (they move wipes, adult diapers, open Kleenex and silverware from room to room; open garbage cans with poop and pee wipes in them left indefinitely, used bedding, used socks with pee and gloves left in client rooms on floor and furniture indefinitely). I've worked my whole life in a middle school, and we have better hygiene habits. When he arrived, no one unpacked him, and I found him lying in his pee-soaked bedding because they did not provide him a pee cup, and I had to chase people down to change the pee-soaked bedding, He can pee independently into a pee cup, and was regularly doing so in hospital. The next am, I arrived to find him lying in poop, and he said emergency call button did not work (they confirmed and changed his room). Dad can poop in toilet, if he gets an assist but no one there wants to do that. Then, the third day I arrived, he said the worker was abusive towards him while changing him in the middle of night because she was angry she had to change him out of his poop alone and what she did hurt him physically. He said it took her 2 hours to come in while he lay in his poop. The physical, occupational, and speech pathologist are very helpful but not there all the time (third party hire). He was supposed to be 1:1 for food because he has to get used to a new diet that requires using a spoon, but they just dropped off food, and left, every single time. No one assisted him to upfront position to eat or got him out of bed to a chair or dining room to eat, either, like they did in the hospital. The last day, he wanted the soup, I tried to get him upright and tried it myself first to test hotness, and it boiling hot (hot enough to burn him). This place looks pretty outside (middle of beautiful forest preserve), but I'd never never recommend leaving a loved one here

The staff look at you as if you should not be there and don't even greet you when you come in. Had we not said anything they would have not spoke to us at all. Every time my Aunt improves enough in the hospital to be sent to rehabilitation she is sent to their facility she ends up with some infection or her vitals get bad and she ends up having to go back to the hospital. Yesterday I went to see my Aunt at this facility because I heard she had an accident (incontinent bowels) and they had to clean her. I made it 3 hours later and found her laying in sheet with old poop on it as well as her pillow under her feet. I could not find anyone to help for about 10min and when I did I told them to change it and me and my mom stepped out so they could. We immediately came in when they were done to find that her same poopy pillow had been flipped over and placed back under her feet. I told the CNA and Nurse and the CNA said "I did change them". So I walked her in the room and showed her the pillow and told her "you did not change it you just flipped the pillow over and put it back under her feet. I know because that poop was on the left side on the top and now it's on the right side on the bottom" Also, Her old linen was left in the room. I told the head nurse that her linen was left in her room She came in and reassured me it was not. But again upon further Inspection the other pillow had red pop or juice all over it. Finally they changed everything. Today we get a call from my aunt's husband that they are shipping her back to the hospital because her vitals are not good and she might have an infections. If she does have an infection it's because she got it from that super unclean facility. It's cluttered and they have dirty equipment everywhere. Not to mention the staff is not compassionate. At this point I feel like it's retaliation from us having to tell them to do their job correctly yesterday and will be seeking legal representation asap.
