As a 2nd generation of Hispanic immigrants with family in the military and as an RN I do NOT recommend this bank to other members of this community for a few reasons.
1. Chris Coats in BECU Fraud Prevention is operating on some privlidged, inconsiderate and trash tier customer service for being employed by a financial institution that claims to support POC.
Handful of my family are learning English & since I am the one whom speaks English & the only one in my family with a degree in nursing, I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR MONITORING EVERYONE'S CREDIT IN MY FAMILY FOR FRAUD THAT BECU does NOT CATCH.
Most of my family DOES NOT SPEAK ENGLISH & understanding financial rules, regs & requirements is like solving a rubics cube.
I reviewed my Moms Nov 2022 BECU statement for something else & found 8 Amazon transactions she definitively did not make.
I called Amazon & they investigated & they directly admitted it was found that two sep accounts that they determ WERE THERE OWN EMPLOYEES were committing the fraud using the card saved on file for her. AMAZON SAID THEYD COOPERATE WITH MY MOM RECEIVING A REFUND DUE TO THEIR EMPLOYEES FRAUD AGAINST MY MOTHER.
My mother was so confused by she granted permission for me to communicate on her behalf.
The first person I spoke to informed me that BECU, due to VISAs trash policy, ONLY ALLOWS FRAUD DISPUTES FOR 60 DAYS BACK.
BECU staff said shed dispute the transactions anyway bc 'BECU generally allows grace refunds to customers for reporting of definitive fraud for the 1st time it is missed past 60 days'.
While this joke of a fp policy begins with trash tier VISA, I was provided education by initial BECU staff & she disputes for me & entered notes stating that my mother speaks ESL, that I have to monitor my ESL fam accounts & I apologized for finding this late but still think we deserve to have refund due to Amazon stating it was clear-cut Amazon employee fraud & Amazon stated they would cooperate with BECU in allowing the refund.
CHRIS COATS 1722940 of BECU Fraud took all of this into consid & denied a refund of clear-cut fraud charges to my mother citing VISA, however, I was told by BECU customer service agent before Chris Coats took the case & 2 BECU branch staff that BECU can & should refund my mother espec bc Amazon was happy to admit and assist with the refunds.
I am appalled and disgusted & beyond embarrassed that I ever led my mother to bank with this financial institution.
I feel that invoking the word racist in this situation, is unfair but I genuinely feel that toxic masculinity & male, potentially white male privlidge is the reason that my mother was not given the grace that other BECU members state she should have received in this situation.
2. My cousin whom had the misfortune of being in trouble w LE only once for marijuana, legal in WA when used reasonably. When he got out he had full access to his BECU account, using it without issue. It was also being monitored by his PO when he exited. He is doing great & manages a local high end restaurant, does excellent on probation w no violations. BECU randomly closed his account 'Due to Reputational Risk', AFTER he had done his time for a common nonviolent crime. As a member of the Hispanic community, our immigrant family members struggle to integrate & I find his account closure low & unsupportive. This negatively effected, again, an immigrants financial status by dropping his credit due to removing financial history. They axed his financial access after he served his time is back to a successful path in life. When BECU states they are supporting minorities, being inclusive & supporting equity they are the opposite in practice.
My mother and my cousin (whom is like a brother to me) are only BECU members because I trusted BECU to be supportive of Hispanic immigrants whom speak English as a 2nd language and BECU failed TWO members of my family when it could have provided them grace and support.
Im disgusted & will definitely be phasing myself, mi madre, my cousin out of this bank & into ones that dont PRETEND to take care of the Hispanic community that have many barriers to overcome (including language, RELIABLE & LONG-TERM SUPPORTIVE financial opportunities) read more
