This downtown shop is new, so I decided to check it out yesterday while I was walking on King. It's super cute, and I'm glad I did. The place is very clean, the artwork and items for sale are trendy, cute, and relevant, and lots of things are noticeably handcrafted or homegrown in NC. I was sending pics (the ones I uploaded to this review) to a few friends and all of them were responding saying they wished they were there/could buy everything in the store/could decorate their homes like the store. Admittedly, the items for sale are a little pricy, but I'm a broke graduate student and also don't have an eye for art, so my thoughts are certainly biased. I wanted to buy something there to support the business, but have limited funds, so I had to be very selective and thoughtful about my purchase. If the prices were cheaper or I was richer, I would want mostly everything in the store. They even had cool drinks for sale.. After looking at the Common Good Co website, I see there's much more to this place than just a store! There's an art gallery and studio, and it looks like the company is working really hard to be integrated with and connected to the larger Boone community. The owners are a darling married couple that graduated from App State. They are actually living out my dream. #represent!

It ended up being his favorite hat and unfortunately while jet skiing he lost it. About a year later my husband and I made a special stop from NJ on our way to Georgia and stayed over in Boone to search for this specific hat. After a few stores we stopped at MO's. Lo and behold they had that hat but not in the right color so we bought 2 of the same hats in other colors. They said they would take our name and number and if the color we needed ever came back in stock they would reach out. Ten months later I was shocked when I heard the voicemail! The hat just arrived at our home in NJ and I am so excited to be able to give it to him for his graduation. What exceptional customer service and going the extra mile for your customers! Sparta Candle Co. is located in downtown Sparta, NC, and has a beautiful history. It was founded in…read more2019 when the owner wanted to create clean and healthy candles for a family member. The business grew from there and moved into its current storefront on Main Street back in 2021. What initially brought me to the store was tracking down the Art Wooten mural painted by artist Scott Nurkin as part of the NC Musicians Trail. What truly pulled me through the main front door, however, was their warm "Come As You Are" sign and the creative plant-filled bathtub displayed in the window. I knew immediately it was a place where I wanted to shop. I almost didn't venture inside, as heavy scents frequently trigger headaches for me, but the air inside this shop was remarkably clean and didn't trigger any sensitivity at all. Everything in the store is handmade in small batches, ranging from their premium candles and room sprays to diffusers and liquid soaps. They utilize 100% natural, plant-based soy wax, lead-free cotton wicks, and completely dye-free, phthalate-free clean fragrances. The shop is organized by scent rather than product type. This layout makes it easy to shop after you find the scents you like. If you are a Swiftie fan, there is a section for you! I went with the Showgirl scent, which is part of their Swift collection, and the local New River scent. But there were a lot to choose from, so that you can find the perfect gift for someone or yourself. The customer service from the staff was warm and attentive, completely matching the cozy, local vibe of the mountain community. I was also given a sample of Folklore. The shop is divided into two sections, with the front retail area and the back holding inventory and likely where the candle-making classes are held. I only wish I lived closer so I could take advantage of those workshops, but it gives me the perfect excuse to plan a return visit. I didn't notice the gorgeous, historic exposed brick walls until I was leaving, and I appreciate that the owners preserved the authentic character and heritage of the building. Between the top-tier ingredients, the thoughtful store layout, and the welcoming environment, this is a five-star anchor destination for downtown Sparta.

But this type of store is exactly what you want to see when you go to Boone...it's on that hippie dippy crunchy earthy patchouli juju crystals and charms and voodoo tip, and it is so much fun. They've got jewelry and books and charms and handmade things and instruments and tarot cards and art and clothing and I love it all. I was specifically looking for gifts to bring back home for my little girls and found the perfect things. There is a section by the cash register that had dozens of handmade necklaces, all with various crystals and coins from around the world. I found two of the sparkliest, Dark Crystalliest ones and decided to go with those. The fun part was, there was a sign next to these necklaces that told a little story about the family that makes them, and explains that they do not price anything, and will accept anything that the buyer decides is fair. That is super cool, and a great way to get karma flowing heavy. I make jewelry regularly, so I know the cost of supplies, and can fairly accurately gauge the amount of time put into pieces. I decided $20.00 was fair for what I chose. I also purchased a bar of lemongrass soap, handmade from a Boone local. This is some of the strongest smelling lemongrass soap I've ever smelled, and I've already showered with it and am kicking myself for not getting more. Once I made the purchases, the lady at the checkout seemed thrilled, rang me up, and before I left said, "Wait! You and your girls need the angels...here..." as she poured a handful of silver, glittering angel confetti into my hand. What a lovely human.
