They had a ton of great inventory at a variety of prices. They also didn't police me in the store while I meandered with tiny items in my hand, which was nice. Good visit.

Even though it is New Zealand designed and made, there is not too much kiwiana, that makes for good gifts for tourists or people you know who are overseas but much of the store is just products created by amazingly talented people of whom Texan Art Schools bring collectively into their store. You'll find textiles, glass, ceramics, jewelry and prints here as well as what I think must be feijoa candles because the store smells of feijoas. A while back I purchased some amazing glass vases and a dish for myself and had wanted to go back and get another colour of one of the vases. It was gone. So lesson here is that you need to just buy it at the time. Stock is often limited.

They do loads of stuff, including Jewellery, paintings, signs, korus, ceramics, wood carvings, sculptures, you name it. Many of the items they sell are also one offs so very unique bits which are wonderful for special gifts whether it be for someone living in NZ or family and friends overseas. Also while some things are expensive, I think they have something for everyone's budget. I have been to the Newmarket and Ponsonby stores and have found staff at both to be very helpful with advice for gifts.

There is a small museum with some carvings (notably some lovely scrimshaw) but it's basically a small room; it's all about the factory store. You can see people doing the carving through glass windows, and there is a sign stating they use mostly local greenstone, with Canadian if that's unavailable. Prices are unbelievable; there are several designs available and they're happy to tell you what the different shapes mean. (The little bronze kiwi statues are also much cheaper here than I saw them elsewhere.) Some of the finishing, notably on the bone pieces, is perhaps not as fine as I've seen elsewhere - but the prices were a half or a third of what I'd seen. They even have little fragments of greenstone for $10-$20 if you want a worry stone. Service was friendly and helpful and there was a wide variety of jewelry, notably pendants.

I was impressed by the fact this souvenir shop sold work by New Zealand artists, probably commissioned based, but so are galleries. It is a great way to buy a unique gift for someone without having to trek out into the outer markets or surrounding suburbs if you on a tight time schedule but want to buy that something a little bit different and not mass produced overseas. Their was photographic art, ceramics with Kiwi iconography and New Zealand's natural timbers made into crafty useful objects. I personally picked up a small ceramic plaque with a kiwi bird on it and a nice green glaze over the top, it was by 'Art Locker' and cost me $9.20. I was pretty happy with that, and I hope my friends in Perth will too, since it is intended for them. They also stock the Ugg Boots range, and for $379 you can get yourself a pretty outrageous pair of sequined Ugg Boots. They also have the Ugg baby range, which are actually quite cute little bootie shoes and things, but I couldn't justify spending $100 on a pair of baby shoes that would fit for about 2 weeks.
