The school lets "boys be boys" while still maintaining a rigorous and academically challenging approach for the more advanced classes, and there is a great sense of community here. The jury is still out for me on the new "21st century learning" techniques. It is good to see some innovation in education and I like that and the new scheduling. I do think there needs to be a balance though with some more traditional education. Chapel services weekly and the focus on service really help round out everything. Costs have gone up significantly, so that lowers them a star, but the boys have really developed a sense of community, supportive classmates, and brotherhood that builds on diversity and strengths of each individual's talents. That is such a positive that these boys will take with them for life.

The teachers are good except for 2 of them, Charlotte Mathews, she denied or never gave some programs to my son such as dual enrollment, but all other students in the classroom do get it. Coincidentally my son the only Hispanic. One day an important person visited the class and my son, like others, raised their hands to ask but, Mathews never gave him the authorization to ask the question, but all the other students could. My son came to that school with honors in Mathematic, but last year, due to health condition and a disagreement with Michael Frawley, a mathematics teacher who covered about 6 other classes, did not have enough time to update and correct my son doubts, and he wanted to remove of the honor program at Mathew's suggestion. Another disappointment was with the 5-day trip to Canada where autistic children had to sleep with other unknown students in the same bed, something that my son complained the first night to Michael Frawley. He ended up sleeping in a chair because the teachers were too busy "with each other" to take charge of the situation. By the way, you pay for the trips to Canada or Greece, not the school. But when I see Villa girls in Philly, they often exclaim in gushing tones, "Wasn't it the BEST time of your LIFE! Don't you MISS it?!" Abso-fucking-lutely NOT. I always said the best thing about Villa was Malvern Prep down the road. Between the pressure to excel in academics, play sports, and cram 51,000 activities into your schedule, I hated my life from ages 14-18. I'm not some Columbine outcast either. I made good grades, had a group of friends, did charity work and was in the school play, choir, and volunteered. Villa Maria's school policies were to repress creativity, demand conformity, and always look picture-perfect in your pervert's dream Catholic school uniform. Villa takes the credit for the natural tendencies of excessively parented, upperclass white girls; which is to achieve. It has nothing to do with the school or their ridiculously quaint ideas about education. Don't send your girls to Villa. If they are smart, they will do well in any school. If they need help or are not inclined to Lockean "tabula rasa" classroom environments, they will wither and die under Villa's oppressive regime. Up with education, down with Villa.

I am proud to call myself an O'Hara graduate. My years there prepared me well for my college and…read moregraduate degrees. The friends that I made in high school are still my closest friends thirty years later. My child is a current student here and is enjoying it as well. His faith is strong and he is excelling in academics. He appreciates the uniform and takes pride in his appearance. He does not find that it stifles his creativity for creativity comes from within and he is able to express himself through his essays and artwork. The teachers here assist the students in excelling and are truly concerned with helping them achieve greatness. Being a teacher in a Catholic school is truly a vocation and we are blessed and grateful to be a part of such an outstanding community.
