I've been a reader for over 15 years and I appreciate their "critical thinker" view on topics instead of the usual crap from the Indianapolis Star. I'm honestly embarrassed that it has taken me eight years as a member of Yelp's Elite Squad to…read morethink to myself "I should review the Indianapolis Recorder." I'm even more embarrassed, to be honest, that I'm the first actual review of this 126-year-old newspaper that is easily one of the premier African-American newspapers in the country. This review was triggered by an e-mail received from the Recorder regarding a new initiative they have going with the Next Generation Initiative to cover local sports and publish a weekly digital sports page. It's a collaboration that will provide aspiring writers, photographers, and digital content creators with training in sports media communication. It's yet another way that the Indianapolis Recorder is continuing to serve Indianapolis. The Indianapolis Recorder covers a wide variety of topics including general news, health, education, sports, and religion. It was founded in 1895 by George P. Stewart and Will Porter and William G. Mays is currently publisher with Shannon Williams as President. The newspaper started out as a two-age church bulletin before expanding to a four-page newspaper. Of course, it has grown much larger now. The Indianapolis Recorder has always been a bold, outspoken newspaper whether speaking out against the Klan in the 20's and 30's or supporting the war effort in World War II or being a passionate voice during the Civil Rights movement. Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post reporter William Raspberry once worked for the Indianapolis Recorder. In the late 1980s, Eunice Trotter bought the paper and I even wrote briefly for the paper. Trotter started an internship program, separated the paper into 4-color separate sections, and updated computers along with changing the Recorder's charity program. By the early 90's, she sold the paper to Mays. Mays's niece, Carolene (whom I believe is Yelp Elite!) became the general manager for several years!~ Shannon Williams created Recorder Media Group and the Indianapolis Recorder now has a sister publication, Indiana Minority Business Magazine! For 126 years, the Indianapolis Recorder has served Indy, Indy's African-American Community and been a voice for all of Indy's minorities and underserved. The Recorder Media Group annually presents the Champions of Diversity Award (which I was honored to receive in 2015). I'm a years-long subscriber to the Indianapolis Recorder (I really am embarrassed I haven't done this review) and continue to read it, mostly digitally, because of its community focus and always quality writing. If you've never picked up a copy or checked it out online, I highly recommend it.

I am baffled how our fellow Yelp Elite Nicole S. has never thought to review Indy's beloved "Indy's…read moreChild" magazine, a 37-year-old parenting resource that has won awards locally and nationally that reaches over 75,000 readers and is available at over 500 locations. You've seen it. I know you've seen it. Heck, I don't even have kids and I read it because it's filled to the brim with great things to do, parenting resources, holiday fun, camps, education resources, and it even offers special needs directories nicely suited for parents of children with disabilities. It is impossible for you to not love this magazine. Plus, you can frequently find the writing of Yelp Elite Nicole S. in the magazine and it usually has something to do with one of her adventures with her family. The magazine itself is free. Mary Cox is the publisher and Nicole S. is editor (So, yes. She really is reading your Yelp reviews and cringing at the typos. I jest. I jest. She's not doing that. That's me. That's really me. However, she really is the editor!). I love the magazine because it helps me discover Indy. I find new places to go, fun attractions, and more than a few hidden gems. It's common for reviews to mention disability and this helps me plan whether it's a spot for me or not. Indy's Child started in Indy in 1984 - the year after I graduated high school. So, it's really a magazine I've grown up with and I can't imagine Indy without it. It's fun to read, informative, educational, and is part of what makes Indy, well, Indy. If you've never picked up a copy, I recommend it. This is especially true if you're a parent. You can also find Indy's child actively on social media and I've been using it like crazy as I try to immerse myself more in the holiday season this year. Verifiably one of the first locally and family-owned parenting magazines in Indiana, Indy's Child is also one of the only publications to be distributed to a majority of schools, libraries, child care agencies and other family-oriented facilities. Have I sold it enough? Seriously, leave your house right now and go get a copy. I mean, okay, I'm writing this at 6am and it's still dark outside here in Indy. So, well, maybe wait until it gets light. But, seriously, wake up. There's a lot to do and Indy's Child has it all.

Branches is a free bi-monthly (every 2 months) alternative newspaper with a "new age" focus,…read morepublished in Indianapolis. Their office is located in Broad Ripple, naturally. You'll find their paper in those racks with other free publications. They are owned by Apple Press. I'm not normally a touchy-feely new-age kind of guy, but I do have a spiritually sensitive side. My religion and politics definitely don't match well with many of the advertisers, and with what I perceive to be the target audience of this newspaper. Yet, as a Christian I do believe in an unseen spiritual existence in which we existed prior to, and will exist in after, this mortal vale. Therefore, the thing I like in this newspaper is the attempt to make some connection or gain some understanding of the physical/spiritual relationship. So I pick up a copy when I see a new issue out. Sure, there are some wacka-doodles, moon-beams, and space-cadets who write articles and advertise, but there are also some gems in the newspaper: some support groups are listed, some legitimate service providers, and some articles that get you to think, or put a new perspective on a traditional idea. You won't find me stripped to the waist, sitting around a camp-fire banging a drum on a men's retreat. But, there is more to existence than what meets the five senses.

The IBJ is a good of local business news. I don't subscribe to their print edition because it's a…read morelittle pricey, but I'll read it from time to time at work. I really like their enewsletters, which come twice a day and keep me updated on local business news... between it and the Indy Star newsletters, I feel like I get a pretty comprehensive overview of local happenings each day. While I'm not a regular subscriber to the print edition, I do appreciate the smaller size of it because it is easier to hold and read than a standard size newspaper. Also, I think they do a really nice job with the page layouts - they also seem clean and crisp.
