Tami Wells Thomas was appointed by the court to serve as the Guardian ad Litem in my custody case…read more I paid a $2,500 retainer fee with the expectation that she would conduct a thorough, independent investigation focused on my daughter's best interests. Unfortunately, that was not my experience. From the beginning, communication was frustrating. She was often difficult to reach by phone, emails frequently took several days to receive a response and when she did respond, she often answered only portions of my emails while leaving my most important questions unanswered. I repeatedly had to send follow-up emails just to get updates or clarification. Throughout the investigation, I also found her to be inattentive and forgetful of prior conversations. There were times where I had to remind her of things we had already discussed because it seemed she did not remember earlier conversations. That made it difficult to feel confident that the details of my case were being carefully considered. I fully cooperated throughout the investigation and submitted extensive documentation, including medical records, police reports, court filings, audio recordings, screenshots and detailed written updates. I provided everything I believed was necessary because this case involved my 4 year old daughter and very serious concerns. The investigation was brief and there were long periods with very little communication. By the end of the process, I felt that many of the concerns I had raised regarding my daughter's welfare were not meaningfully addressed in the final report. After providing documentation and participating in the investigation, I found the final report to be vague and lacking meaningful analysis. It acknowledged that there were ongoing communication, co-parenting and child welfare concerns, but it did not explain how the evidence was evaluated, how the recommendations were reached or why no specific recommendations were made to address the very issues the report identified. I understand that not every parent will agree with a Guardian ad Litem's recommendations. My disappointment is not simply that I disagreed with the outcome. It is that I did not feel the investigation reflected the seriousness of the concerns, the amount of information I provided or the level of attention I expected after paying a $2,500 retainer fee. My daughter will have to live with the consequences of the recommendations made in this case, which is why I expected a more thorough and carefully documented investigation. I would NOT recommend Tami Wells Thomas as a Guardian ad Litem.
