That…read moresaid, Elveden House is where men should go to experience the roots of a truly good haircut. In Calgary on business for a few days and in need of getting my hair tamed and refined, I checked out the reviews on Yelp and elsewhere before deciding on Elveden House. If you're looking for one of those shops where TV's, pool tables, and other distractions are part of the haircut "experience", this ain't it. If, however, you want an exceptionally good haircut delivered with grace and style by a traditional master of his craft, this is the place! Until I sat down in Joe's chair and was well into the haircut, I had forgotten how far we've come from the essence of barbering. I've had cuts at salons around the country, fad places with video games and attractive stylists, and other co-ed hair places but the folks at Elveden leave them all in the dust with the simplicity and pure skill they bring to cutting hair. I have friends and co-workers in NYC and elsewhere that routinely pay $100-$200 to get a cut this good. Mine was $25 cash. A true scissors man, Joe did an excellent job making even me look better and almost suave compared to when I came in. I almost wish I took a before pic just to show the difference! To top it off, the head and neck massage made me feel better in addition to looking better. Do yourself a favor and experience old school barbering at it's finest and Elveden. Just don't tell the hipsters or they'll mob this place and you'll never get in. :-)

A mix-up (two customers with the same name and the same appointment time) meant that no one was sure who to serve when I arrived. Despite showing up early, my doppelgänger was already having his haircut and I was left standing around for a bit. However, this was no big deal and an honest mistake. Maybe Khee is the man to go to for a great cut? I wouldn't know since he was cutting the other client with my same name and one more client was "next in line," even though it was unclear whether he had actually made an appointment. Instead, my appointment was a rushed 20-min econo cut performed by a different Southeast Asian gentlemen. I didn't catch his name and the entire cut was conducted in absolute silence. The quality is on par with SuperCuts. The barber jabbed my head repeatedly with the comb and scissors and pulled on my hair while cutting. These are all signs of speed and inexperience over quality. It was frankly an uncomfortable cut and the results were shoddy and uneven. The only nice part was the 1.5 minutes the barber pretended to massage my neck and shoulders. For the not inexpensive price of $25 + tax & tip (note: cash only), there was no shampoo service, no hot towel and razor to the back of the neck--nothing that made the cut feel worth the price. Also there's a hilariously weird vacuum cleaner hose they use to suction the cut hairs off your head! The gentlemen working there all seem nice, but I won't be back.

I set an appointment for 11 and was greeted at the door by my barber, a very nice young man named... Ed? Ted? Anyway he's one of the three owners and is, I came to learn, of Filipino extraction and we had a nice rollicking conversation over the course of my visit. After introducing himself he invited me to go into a change room and to swap my shirt for one of their t-shirts, Social branded, so I wouldn't get clippings all down mine. SCORE! I had never seen this before but every barber shop, if they have the space (and Social is a big, accommodating space), should offer this. I loved this, I ended up with zero itchy clippings as I headed home. The cut itself was perfect, flawless, and after the barber cut my hair and had me approve it with my glasses back on, asked me to stand and follow him a few steps where he rinsed my hear in the hairwash sink. This was another brilliant idea, no stray clippings covering my hands when I ran my hand through my newly-shorn head. This was another first for me. Now you'd expect that all this gold-star treatment would have made this haircut super pricey- but nope, going rate for a short hair "buzz cut" came to around $26. Not cheap but far from expensive and less than I've paid for experiences that weren't remotely this pleasant.

They used to be a strong 4 star experience in terms of what you get, the time they spent on extra things vs value but clearly this Covid pandemic has effected all of us, however I wish I could simply do less work and service, care less work less and charge more in my profession, due to the pandemic, but clearly it would be wrong. I had to wait for a few people and noticed as we all have how society has been forced to focus less on grooming because if the pandemic and many shops in all industries have suffered which can make stable revenue difficult. The answer isn't to lower your service level & charge more, it should be to keep the old excellent business model they had. Why not incentive your clients especially your long-time regulars to return back to their monthly hair cut schedule and to get your volumes back as close to original volumes as possible. Why not keep a list of your regulars and touch base with them in 4 to 6 weeks to try and pre-book a few of them or offer a punch-card program where every 10th cut is half price? If you have their contact info than you have an actual intangible asset refered to as a client list. This can allow for strategic target marketing. You can call regulars to pre-book them and offer referral programs where every referral that is sent in and gets a cut, adds to their punch-card points and eventually leads to a half price hair cut for them and possibly the person who is refereed gets a discounted first cut. With people getting points each gut to a discounted cut or product plus with extra points for referrals that lead to long-term clients the business model will grow itself in no time. I think pre-pandemic the services and overall value were so strong they never had to focus on client retention and sales but now in the pandemic, while all of us are much poorer, it's not the time to lower our hours, services and standards while drastically raising our prices. Legally most companies can't do this and the ones that do should be ashamed. This fine place is by no means one of those types of businesses but it's a slippery slope when you contously decide to lower your hours and output knowing that you will get fewer clients this way so you will than need to charge them much more money to allow for the kids of client volumes, especially in a global pandemic a 6 year recession that is bordering on a full economic depression. I am pretty sure the owner/stylist is just going through a very tough Covid period like all of us, and in a few months his hours, price, attitude and service will all be 4 stars once again very soon and even now in a pandemic is still a very good option.
