What a gem! This is the best local non touristy meal and brew we've had while in Bavaria. Probably the best of the trip frankly. Don't be put off by the cafeteria style ordering process. You've entered a small bergs eating and watering hole and you won't be disappointed. When ordering or deciding What to order, ask to see the dish or meat first if you're not sure. Least favorite of the stop was the cold potato salad and the 'ok but not lakefront brewery' obatzda. (If you haven't had lakefront brewery's obatzda on your pretzel, you haven't lived). After a day at the castles, take a little longer drive to visit here. Be sure to call in advance for reservations and if it's early, when they say no, tell them you'll be in and out in under 2 hours. Maybe you'll get a seat.

I went for the 1/4…read morechicken, and regretted that upon taking my first bite - it was so delicious, so tender, that I could have easily forgone some of the potatoes on the side for more of that amazing chicken. But, I should start with the salad, which was also delicious. I was so impressed with the starter salads we ate throughout Bavaria, as each probably had eight or ten components. The salad here, as well as the dressing, was wonderful (as was the King Ludwigs beer). As noted previously, the chicken was incredible, and the dessert was perfect for full stomachs. Service was quick and polite, and the staff spoke enough English to help our struggling American group. If you're staying in Hopfem, make a reservation here - and get as much chicken as you can! :)

Our friends booked a stay for all of us at this country inn. We drove up late at night and…read moreimmediately felt that we would have a good stay at this quaint place. Frau Zeh, the wife of the owner welcomed us personally, made sure that we had dinner, keeping the kitchen open for us, and also made sure that we were comfortable with our rooms. The rooms are rather basic, but scrupulously clean and comfortable. Beds were typically German: two mattresses in a double frame, two blankets. We had breakfast buffet and menu-fixe, three course dinner included. The breakfast was beautifully laid out with local cheese and meat offerings, the best soft-boiled eggs I've had in a while, breads and fruit, coffee, tea, in a word everything you could ask for in a hearty mountain breakfast to sustain you for the hikes of the day. Dinner was always delicious, and for me always vegetarian, something I really appreciated. You can order wine or beer (you're in Bavaria after all), Odl (a local Kraeuterschnapps of sorts, cures everything) or cocktails extra. We were there for a Friday evening of Bavarian and Austrian (it's only a few kilometres away) music; they had a full house and we were treated to a lovely evening. I've saved the best for last: we were leaving very early, before the kitchen opened in the morning, and Frau Zeh made sure that we had breakfast/lunch sandwiches, fruit, water and orange juice for our journey. How many hoteliers and innkeepers do you know who will offer you this? If you go for hiking or skiing, we heartily recommend that you give Gasthof Aggenstein the opportunity to make your vacation a success. Danke vielmals und auf Wiedersehen!
