This is the South and they love their Confederate War history here. The marker is in great shape and from here, there is a great view of the water. Near this site on March 20, 1863, Confederate soldiers commanded by Captain Walter J. Robinson repelled a landing by Union sailors led by Acting Master James Folger of the blockading vessel U.S.S. Roebuck. The 11-man scouting party of Union sailors was seeking to locate a southern civilian vessel near the "Old Town" spring, when they were reportedly ordered to surrender by Captain Robinson. During the ensuing skirmish, several Union sailors were killed and wounded as they fled to their launch boat. Quarter, or safe passage, was requested by the remaining Union sailors to retrieve their dead and wounded. Total Union casualties were six dead and three wounded. Union sailors buried four of the deceased on nearby Hurricane Island, and a fifth sailor was interred by the Confederate soldiers. No casualties were recorded by the Confederate unit, which later became Company A of the 11th Florida Infantry Regiment. After the conclusion of the Civil War, the remains of the Union sailors were removed to the national cemetery at Fort Barrancas.

City of DeFuniak Springs - I love the name DeFuniak.

City of DeFuniak Springs

When growing up in Los Angeles, I remember a lady approximating retirement age who hailed from…read moreDeFuniak Springs, Florida. It's not every day you hear a name like DeFuniak. Then, this lady was sort of eccentric, so you wouldn't easily forget her. You see, in L.A., there are no normal people. They are either sarcastic, irreverent, wannabees, direct, materialistic, angry, eccentric, cool, narcissistic, or some combination of these things. I'd say her calling card was "eccentric," so she fit right in. Well, on a cross country trip using I-10, there it was! It was an off-ramp for DeFuniak Springs! Thus, it was a real place. And this lady's tire tracks had, at one time or another, probably matched the very ones I was laying. This time, I pulled off the interstate to briefly check out the town of DeFuniak Springs. The town is only slightly north of Interstate 10. The town itself is very quaint and there is a large lake in the middle of it. Around this lake is a loop road lined with large, beautiful historically inspired homes. For that matter, there are a lot of nice homes and interesting structures, such as churches, government buildings, and others, in DeFuniak Springs. Being in Florida's Panhandle, the area is very forested. I randomly asked a lady what put DeFuniak Springs on the map. She said that it was the railroad. As far as I know, the railroad's importance must have diminished, seeing that Amtrak does not run across the top of Florida but, rather, descends diagonally from Atlanta toward New Orleans, missing most, if not all, of the Panhandle cities and towns. So I got my answer. The question I didn't ask is who DeFuniak was. I thought I'd give that a rest. Even I thought it was somewhat strange to lower the rental car's window and randomly converse with someone about their small town to begin with.

Very family orientated and good retirement area. Housing prices have started going up since easy access to beach. Move here if you want to have a couple of acres and a house, nice neighbors, choice of churches, beach days, and family outing days. Nice support of retired community. Senior center, shuttle, walking trail around lake. Easy to drive to town. Small town so can do shopping in just a few hours. Yes, you will meet your neighbor and be greeted by name at the local stores, if that is what you want. The town was named after a railroad magnet. He built a spur from his railroad to this area. Chautauqua society was founded and still in operation in this town. Summer reading and lectures at beautiful leactur hall. Natural meteor made lake with walking trails, ducks, playground, fountains and antebellum homes is the jewel or town. Many lakes throughout area with resorts for RV. All in town are 4th July celebration, Christmas parade, State fair, Boy scouts, Girl scouts, Little theater, Football games........ There is also a great winery here with tours daily. You may taste the wine and see the vats. Just off the interstate. Great weather. Warm and sunny. Close to highest point in Florida.
