The "Salt Palace" isn't really a palace. It's a small building, barely the size of a storefront…read more Inside and outside, it tells the story of Grand Saline and how the town got that name. The building is constructed entirely of rock salt (yes, you can lick the building if you wish) and inside is a small museum that contains salt mining memorabilia and photographs as well as film of the Morton Salt mining operations. You get a free salt crystal as a take away and I bought a fridge magnet for my collection. I spent about 20-30 minutes here, enjoying the memorabilia, learning about salt and salt mining and chatting with a wonderful woman who clearly has a passion about Morton Salt and Grand Saline. I'm super happy that this quirky little spot landed as my 16000th review. If you are driving along I-20 east of Dallas/Fort Worth, this treasure is a 12 mile detour that will take you about 20 minutes out of your way. It's totally worth it. We were researching the area and found the No.1 Brittish Flying Museam and decided to pay it a visit. It is located at the Terrell airport in an unpretentious metal building and accompying metal hanger. There is an interesting story about the No. 1 Brittish Flying School, how it came about and contributed to training around 2,200, mostly Brittish pilots during WWII. The impact the school had on Terrell, the Brittish, and the war effort. We were met at the door by the Executive Director of the musueam and shortly thereafter joined another couple and board member on a tour of the musueam. The musueam has preserved the history of what happened in Terrell during WWII with numerous displays, exhibits, and photographs. In the hanger they have two aircraft, one a restored Stearman bi-plane used by the students. From the moment we booked it until the end of the dinner I could tell we were in great hands. Gerrie, the museum representative, was available for us to come out to look over the facility. She also helped us decide on the layout of the room. The museum had tables and chairs for us to use for our dinner. The venue also had table clothes, water glasses, and some other items available. I was actually the last one to arrive for the party but fortunately Gerrie and Bill were graciously greeting all the guests and either guiding them on a tour through the Museum (which is very interesting) or directing them to the drink station and their tables. We feel like we hit the jackpot when we learned about the "No 1 BFTSM" as a venue for the Rehearsal Dinner we were giving and would 100% recommend the museum as a great and unique place for an event! Also, why on earth do you pile the risotto in a square in the middle of the plate and leave the sauce to get cold around it? My friend had the po boy... said it was ok. the buttermilk fries were really good he said and I enjoyed my bloody mary. They had a stuffed tator tot app for $5... was done pretty well for a concept. The cowboys were on and if they scored you got a free jello shot. I don't think I ever expected to see a jello shot at a country club...

"CCCC," as they are known, recently opened up their bar and restaurant, but only their bar and…read morerestaurant, to the public. So, we stopped in for lunch. The bartender couldn't find the waitress so she seated us and went to get some waters. She still couldn't find the waitress so she brought us some silverware. She still couldn't find the waitress so she brought us some menus. Then a party of six walked in, the waitress appeared, seated them, and took their order. Five or ten minutes later the bartender asked if we had been helped, and we told her no. The waitress had disappeared again, so the bartender took our order. We ordered the Philly cheesesteak sandwich with sweet potato fries, and a Club sandwich with regular fries. About 15 minutes later, and miraculously, before the party of six received their order, ours came out. The kitchen had managed to reverse the fries, putting the sweet potatoes with the Club sandwich and the regulars with the Philly cheesesteak. Then the waitress, who miraculously reappeared, put the au jus down next to the Club sandwich, and the on-the-side mayonnaise for the Club down next to the Philly cheesesteak. After we reshuffled the fries and condiments, we began eating, and, three cheers for the chef!! The sandwiches were good. To their credit, everyone was very friendly and apologetic while they were totally screwing up the communication between bartender, waitresses, and kitchen. If I had to guess, I suspect that the staff has grown fairly comfortable in dealing with the same club-member clientele for so long that they may be in for a rude awakening regarding serving the public at large. Plus, if CCCC is anything like a few other country clubs I have seen, at least some of the staff are daughters and sons of members, and are therefore held to a somewhat lower standard of job performance. No clue if that is the case at CCCC, I just mentioned it because I have seen it elsewhere. Since this was our first time there, we asked to see the dinner menu. It looks like a good selection of basic American cuisine, including possibly the only serving of Chilean Seabass to be found in the lake area. So, we will be back for dinner. If the staff can manage to get their "it" together, and the quality of the food is at least on par with our lunch, I will be back to this review to jack the rating up to four stars instead of three. Especially with the recent drought's effect on the local economy, it is great to have another somewhat more upscale eatery among the choices at Cedar Creek Lake, so we are really hoping that this opening-to-the-public thing will work out for CCCC.
