Hmm. The reviews on this place looked very good, and I was hopeful as it was my first formal meal in Berlin. On a Friday evening around 8pm the restaurant was about 75% full, mostly with tourists considering the location. They have outdoor seating though it was a bit too chilly on an October evening to sit outside.
Outside the signage is pretty modern though Inside the decor is pretty traditional. It's larger inside than it looks, seating probably around 100 people. Wood paneling, checkerboard table cloths, wooden benches and banquets are spread around the space.
Since it was pretty late when I arrived at 8:45pm, I was informed the last order for food is taken prior to 9pm and that they were out of the schweinhäxe (pork knuckle). I went with the goulash €24 which was another one of their main recommendations, both by the staff and from what I'd seen online via G-maps. Serving size was very hearty and generous, and the base flavor of the goulash as pleasant. However a few things I didn't enjoy: 1) I'm not sure if most German food is normally served barely warm, which was the case here. 2) The texture of the potatoes was slightly gummy, like they'd over mixed it (not only here but a couple other places too, so not sure if that's the norm, though this wasn't pleasant coming from what I'm used to for mashed potatoes.) 3) the goulash itself embodied the saucy, tangy vinegary flavor of what I've come to learn is intrinsic to central/eastern European cooking though the sodium level was just too much. Not sure if it was the sourness of the pickled cabbage that highlighted the salt but it was so bad that I had to stop eating and let the staff know it was waay too salty, something I never do. The staff seemed apologetic though couldn't do anything about it, so I paid for the check and left. They also don't provide tap water. Will say other than that the staff seemed friendly.
I wanted so much to love this place--charming decor, warm atmosphere, lovely blue/white chinoiserie plates. But based on the above experience prob wouldn't go back. read more
