Decent cafe in Cologne that's apparently pretty popular. The food was ok, not great. It's a bakery with so many freshly baked breads and cakes. The cakes were huge. Definitely recommend sharing a slice with two or three people. I had the focaccia and the olive bread. But I unfortunately ordered way too many carbs for a proper first meal of the day. But Both breads were pretty good. My friend got a burger off the lunch menu that was pretty good apparently. Service was decent. The bathroom wasn't good at all. This is a great place to have brunch with a group of friends or family. They have an assortment of items that will satisfy everybody. I have course had to have the Nutella with a different Flavored condiments to put on it. I always had the fresh mint tea and Orange juice. I had a friend in town from the states and he wanted some good brunch, we went into town and this was the best place to go to. "No bad, no good, no nothing ..." ... would describe this cafe most accurate. It's a typical tourist place where elderly ladies from outside CGN would go for a coffee, some drinks or dinner after an extensive shopping tour through the city. The Coffee is of medium quality, not much better than the one you can get at any bakery in the morning. I didn't enjoy the marble-cherry cake much, since I t tasted old with almost no flavor. Stick to the cakes. Don't eat the food. Good atmosphere, fresh bread, but terrible salad. I ordered the Bastian's banana-curry salad, and it was waaaay too sweet and covered with a sugary dressing. The salad was completely wilted and swimming in dressing. In Germany salads tend to be overdressed in general, but this was extreme. Do not order this. My friends however, were more or less satisfied with their meals though. Haven't tried their cakes yet, but they look tasty were nearly sold out by the time we left after lunch. For a better value and consistently good food, walk up the street to Sweet Sushi instead of eating here. read more

I love this place so much. I ate here for breakfast two days in a row for the two days I was in Köln. This is where you go for traditional german breakfast. Everything from the coffee to the dessert is the best. The service is friendly and our waiter was so kind he remembered us from the day before and brought us a complimentary pastry hot from the oven! Very spacious breakfast/brunch/bakery place located in a great location. I was actually surprised at how huge this restaurant was, especially for a downtown location. Although we came here for a weekday breakfast, the place quickly filled up. Atmosphere is classy, clean, and cozy, bread is typical German fare and freshly baked. Breakfast was also very typically German- bread, hard-boiled eggs, some various deli meats and lettuce. I was hoping for a more abundant hot breakfast option and prefer some of the other brunch buffet options here in Cologne. But I would still recommend Bastian's for decent bread and baked goods, coffee, and also large groups, as the location is spacious enough to accommodate. read more

This place provided a great start to the day, by offering one of the best breakfasts I've had so far in Cologne. The waiters were friendly, and although they didn't have an English menu - they were happy to talk through all the different options. Ended up going for the bacon, egg and salad and it was fantastic. The eggs were possibly the fluffiest, tastiest scrambled eggs I've ever had the pleasure of wolfing down. The bacon was great as well, really flavoursome and fresh and very crispy. Think American style bacon but with more German flavour. This was served with a delicious salad, with a tasty, sweet dressing. And with a basket of bread as well. This place is awesome. Great food, nice staff and good looking cakes. (Germans know off course how to bake good cakes) If the wetter is good, you can enjoy your breakfast in the garden in the sun. Der schlechteste Service mit dem schlechtestem Essen seit wirklich langer Zeit. Es war Mittagszeit, und sehr voll. Wir setzten uns hin und warteten. Die Bäcker in der Bäckerei waren mit Show-Aufgaben beschäftigt, rollten also den Teig hin und her und wirkten eher wie dort hin bestellte Schauspieler, als wie echte Bäcker. Es dauerte. Und dauerte. Nach 20 Min. kam jemand. Wir bestellten die Getränke und fragten, ob das Essen ebenso lange dauern würde wie die Getränke. Ja, lautete die Antwort zum Glück haben wir viel zu tun und dann dauert es eben!!. Wir waren entsetzt. Es ist hier immer voll, scheinbar für Gäste kein Problem, dass es eben dauert. Tolles Statement. Tatsächlich hatte man diesen Mitarbeitern scheinbar beigebracht sich nicht für den schlechten Service zu entschuldigen, sondern diesen sogar als tolles Qualitätsmerkmal anzupreisen! Nun denn, es rannten 4 Keller völlig planlos hin- und her, total chaotisch, unorganisiert, lahm und unfähig. Genauso unfähig war man hinter der Theke. Das alles als POSITIVES Differenzierungsmerkmal zu verkaufen machte uns einfach sprachlos! Die bestellten Burger dauerten genau 45 Minuten, kamen mit Bratkartoffeln statt Wedges und hatten einen 2cm grossen Saucenfleck auf dem Fleisch, waren ansonsten völlig trocken. Das Fleisch war das knorpeligste das ich je gegessen habe, McDonalds ist hingegen ein Sternelokal! Wir haben es liegen gelassen. Das Essen war wirklich, wirklich schlecht. Insgesamt die grösste Enttäuschung überhaupt. Und das für 7,90EUR. Wir werden nie, aber wirklich nie wieder hierherkommen, da der Laden einfach in allen Punkten völlig durchgefallen ist. Very good for breakfast. The space is large and has a few big communal tables as well as individual and a really nice atmosphere inside. The menu for breakfast has the typical assortment of types of breads and pastries that can come with fruit jams or cheese and meat. But, there is also a big selection for eggs which was surprising. Several types of omelettes, fried egg options, and egg dishes. All had the typical variation of cheese and meat or vegetables but so far I haven't found a place with this big of a menu with egg plates. I had an omelette with meat and cheese and it was very big and had a cool little salad with it. Others at the table had the same and also strammer max which I'd recommend as well which is meat cheese and fried eggs on a toast. If you're not into eggs their bakery is amazing and a lot of tables ordered bread basket with various things to go on the bread. Coffee was good too. I had the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon - a big portion sat on top of a slice of bread and with a side salad of romaine lettuce, a couple of slices of tomato and cucumber. For desert, my spouse and I went for what was told to us as traditional from Cologne: Bienenstich. (I cannot validate this info). We got a big slice, perfect for sharing. It had a light creamy vanilla filling (not very sweet) with a sugary almond crust on top (very sweet!), which made a perfect combination. read more
