I've been going to Akari for 14 years with a 6 year break when I moved to LA…read more Akari has a beautiful space on the second floor in downtown Portland. Front desk staff is always very warm and welcoming. This review, though, is about Zira, a Senior Colorist at Akari. I've known her for 8 years or so through Akari, initially when she was an apprentice. As a colorist Zira is warm, upbeat and patient, she is open to feedback, and in fact asks for it, and she's always fun to talk with!

I love Portland and was coming there for a week to celebrate my 60th birthday. One that included a massage, a facial, a manicure and pedicure and a wash and blow dryer so that I could enjoy my evening out. That is exactly what Akari had in store for me. I was a little hesitant because the reviews were kind of a mixed bag. But my spa day was 100% amazing. From the moment I walked in to my massage and the manicure may have been the best manicure I've ever had. The lunch was not served to me in a bag, but put on a beautiful tray with real utensils and served to me like I was a valued customer. Everyone was so kind and I'm hoping to return with my daughter for a special day before she gets married. Thanks for making my birthday very memorable.

An intimate, welcoming spa featuring amazing skincare products made locally--how much better can…read morethings get? Abura is located on Munjoy Hill right next to the coffee shop (now Double Great; used to be Hilltop). It's an unassuming little storefront and I have to confess that it took me longer than it should have to notice it was there! But once I stopped in for the first time and tried a few products, I was hooked. First I was just happy to pick up a few nice products from the retail part in front: a great lip balm, then a nice facial spray, and then Abura's absolutely fantastic product "Afterglow," which is a moisturizing cream and highlighter that makes you look and feel refreshed no matter how pasty your winter complexion might be. Then I started stopping by to pick up gifts for friends, who loved them--especially the "Awake" eye and face cream, which is so popular it keeps selling out. The owner, Amanda, has created an entire line of skincare products with a focus on natural ingredients (and there's a curated selection of other products on sale too). Then I went full-on bliss by booking a facial--and hands down, it's the loveliest facial I've ever had. There are a few different options to book but your first visit will be completely customized to you, based on what your skin needs; Amanda really listens and chooses her products accordingly. I began with a relaxing herbal steam, and then we went into various layers of gentle exfoliation and moisture, moisture, moisture (so necessary for our winters!), including a wonderful honey mask. A week later and my skin is still happy. You can also book a massage here, and a few other treatments, both skincare and energy-oriented. And there's an infrared sauna! I booked a half-hour session after my facial and loved it; the sauna is in its own little room that you have it all to yourself. Infrared is especially great for those of us who don't like or can't tolerate the extreme heat of a steam sauna--and it was *amazing* for wintery, achy joints. For sauna sessions Abura offers packages (which end up giving you a discount). Practicalities: arrive early enough to find street parking (not really an issue in the off-season, but you may need to try a block or two away). There are package deals available for the sauna and facials that offer discounts. And I want to stress the intimacy of this place: it's small, quiet, and not a place for groups (a huge plus, in my book). Abura is a wonderful way to treat yourself and support a local business and I, for one, hope it's here for a long time.
