Ok so Basilico and Castiglia's downtown run neck and neck for the best pizza in town!! Hands down! Background: Basilico has been producing great pizza since they opened. For a long time a real undiscovered gem. Then when the Fall Hill traffic was rerouted to Cowen - right in front of the store - for 10 months our gem was discovered. From the inside: Dining in is a well lit affair, kid friendly but certainly not "dining" in any sense of the word. You order at the front register (sadly, more on that in a minute), choose a table and a friendly staff member will be along with your meals shortly. Beer and wine are available. From the outside: Definitely head-banging time here... When you walk in it is not unusual to find first-time diners standing at the register, menus in hand having to review the six-page menu, look at the menu board above them, ask 10 questions and poll up to 4 kids for their selections - all this while a hopeless line builds behind them. The most agonizing thing in the world is dutifully calling in your pizza order, arriving in perfect timing and having to cool your heels behind two such families.... It is not unusual to stand there, money in hand for 10 or more minutes while MY family is sitting at home getting hungrier, staring at your boxed-up pizza getting colder by the minute while the aforementioned scenario plays out one or more times right in front of you. It is just plain painful.... Having said all that - I keep going back because the pizza IS THAT good! But hopefully they can get this organized a little bit better sometime soon. read more

WOW WOW!!!!!! I literally found heaven in Fredericksburg at a bakery. I travel for a living so I have been so LOTs of so called New York bakeries not in New York but this lives up to the standard!!!!! My family and I came here for desserts only. The dessert showcase had an amazing selection. It had everything and anything you can think of dessert wise. We selected and shared a few of the desserts. We had the chocolate hoho cake, the coconut cream cake and the toasted almond sponge cake. The hoho cake was very chocolatey with the cream in the middle. Where to start about this place. How about with AWESOME! I love this place, and everything about it. The menu is full of options and has so much variety choose from. Plenty of vegan options! I had the "Garden of Eating" sandwich with a bowl of their tomato soup and a soy chai tea latte. It was to die for! I rarely have leftovers but I had some here...the portions were wonderful. They have pizzas, sandwiches, pasta, and a whole bunch more, but I've never had something from here that wasn't wonderful! I have been here twice and love this place. First time, I had the greek salad with grilled chicken...ingredients were very fresh and salad was huge. Probably one of the best greek salads I have ever had. Last time, I ordered the Cuban grilled panini...again, I was not disappointed. Cute Italian style deli and pizza place. We ordered from here on a Sunday evening. Tried to get delivery but delivery is only 11-4(?) apparently for the lunch time crowd. Got 2 pizzas (12in) - margarita and rustica (no mushrooms). The margarita was uneventful but the rustica had great flavor. I think the flavor came from the Italian sausage. Inside the shop was a gelato counter and Italian pastry counter. We got some dessert to go and it was pretty good. Some chocolate covered cream puff type thing and some other cake that had a tiramisu type cream in it. Not sure what either were called but they satisfied the sweet tooth and were huge! Would love to go back and try the gelato or some more on the menu. read more

First time here, came at lunchtime, restaurant was pretty busy and there were times I could see people struggling to find a table. I got the Reuben with a side of Mac & cheese. The Reuben was good, not as flavorful as I expected, but it was good. They were very generous with the meat and also with the cheese. The side of mac & cheese was okay, but I'd have prefer it to have been warmer. I added pepper flakes and Parmesan and it tasted a bit better. It was satisfactory in its cheesiness. Next time I go I will order something else but there definitely will be another next time! The staff were really nice in coming around to check on things and also brought be a box. We desperately wanted to love this place because the reviews were so good, but it fell short. We ordered their Garden of Eatin' with turkey and Cuban sandwiches along with a cannoli. The Garden sandwich is their veggie sandwich with sprouts, tomatoes, cheese and a pesto mayo that is cooked pannini style. I am NOT a fan of warm sprouts. At first we could even tell if there was turkey or cheese on the sandwich because there was so little of both on the sandwich. The Cuban had a good amount of dry pork on it and one thin slice of ham with a sauce that tasted mostly like a spicy Dijon mustard. :( The cannoli was not bad, but it wasn't AWESOME. The custard was a little grainy and the shell was browned too much. The store itself is super cute with their deli and dessert bar, but this is definitely NOT a New York style Italian deli. Hello Friend -- You will be my newest friend after you stop at this place!! I hesitate to call it a Deli. It's menu is much more varied with Italian and new Italian (pizza with new splashes of flavors), gelato and deserts. My wife's food was outstanding! The only time I have seen her take the time to thank the sandwich maker in 29 years of marriage. My lasagna was rich and filling. I couldn't finish it partly because the bread that came with the freshest salad I have ever had was outstanding and I made sure to eat all of that first. The seating area is open and brightly lit albeit a tad noisy because of the tile floor, glass and metal. The staff was alert and attentive without being annoyingly so. I wasn't looking for a fine dining but good food at a good price. Instead I got great food at a good price. I stopped here while traveling through the state. My only criticism was it took a little time to get to from the interstate. However I made up for the loss of time as my spirits were lifted by the freshest of food. read more
