It's the largest duomo in Italy (St Peter's is in the Vatican) and we both thought it's the most impressive on the outside. The history of the duomo is fascinating as you will learn about its construction on the tour. BTW, there are basically 3 areas to tour 1) duomo outside and interior 2) exterior roof tour, and an artifacts tour underneath the main floor. Construction began in 1386 and the cathedral wasn't officially completed until the 20th century. The architectural influences in that time are incorporated - medieval, Renaissance and later. Unlike most cathedrals, you can walk extensively across the roof during the roof tour between the flying buttresses, and pinnacles. The roof has 135 spires and thousands of statues, making the exterior astounding! At the top of the central spire stands the famous golden statue of the Virgin Mary, the symbol of Milan. The interior is very unique as well. One of the most unusual features - an astronomical clock built in 1786!At solar noon, sunlight passing through a tiny opening creates a spot of light on the line, allowing the cathedral's astronomers to determine true solar noon. Check it out - you will be glad you did!

After checking out the Starbucks Reserve Roastery around the corner, we stumbled across this monumental sculpture by Maurizio Cattelan. Also known as Il Dito, or The Finger, it is a giant hand with all of the fingers cut off except for the middle finger sculpted from Carrara marble. L.O.V.E. The name L.O.V.E. stands for Libertà, Odio, Vendetta, Eternità, which translates to Freedom, Hatred, Revenge, Eternity. It is located in Piazza Affari in front of the Italian Stock Exchange, although it did not start there originally. Coincidence?? Art brings the world together. While talking to the manager of Tavola at a Wine and Food Event in The Woodlands, he actually told us a story about Maurizio Cattelan, whose piece The Comedian sold for $6.2 million. Interesting to learn more about this self-trained Milano based artist who uses humor and satire in his works of art. My husband did share our Milan photos with that manager. We bonded over L.O.V.E.

Being Italy's commercial, financial, fashion capital, it just made sense to ONLY reserve a tiny spot for pedestrians to stroll around (young generations prefer to refere to such a past time as "fare una vasca"... which literally means to swim from one end to the next of a pool). Corso Vittorio Emanuele has seen it all... from the opening of McDonald's in the (distant) 80s, to the competition (Burger King) taking over the Duomo location. From an historic landmark (an old cinema called ASTRA) being converted into a store (Zara)... It has hosted many a street performance (break dancing, rapping & freestyle sessions). It has been the go-to place for younger generations that wanted to spend a funny afternoon together (a few cinemas, lots of shopping stores, a few decent food joints). It brings pedestrians from the Duomo square to the San Babila square (from which one can find Via Montenapoleone for some (window) shopping). Though now there are other pedestrian sites along the line (Via Dante and the streets around Sforza Castle, hopefully not limited to the duration of the Expo). Entry was EXTREMELY regimented, most likely to preserve the room temperature and humidity conditions. After all, Leonardo da Vinci used a "dry" technique to paint the mural and while he was able to achieve the dark shading and overall somber effect, it left the mural very, very fragile. We had a 14:45 time slot. At 14:30 they let us in the first door from the plaza. We then proceeded through various doorways where we waited 5 minutes in each section before proceeding to the next. At 14:45 on the dot, the doors to the viewing room opened. We were pretty much the first ones through with people behind us itching to get in front of us. Like the anxiety was palpable. I was glad to have viewed this very sacred, masterful piece of art, the original really showcasing Judas in a VERY different light (like literally, he was very obviously "cast in shadows"). 15 minutes was more than enough time to view the mural since each time slot was maxed out at 40 people and the room never felt overly crowded. We had no guide, but the information placards -- though there were few -- did impart enough history to allow for ample immersion. I am by no means a devout Catholic, but the mural did elicit some awe and fascination!

First I did an Ebike tour with the You're guide and she she took me here while giving me the history of this place. She said this canal was used to bring the ships with the Marble stones to build the Duomo di Milan. Back in the days, the way of transportation was the canals. I came back another day to explore the area. I took the train then walked like 10 mins. to find it. I sat in a restaurant by the water and while sitting there, I was able to kimd of get the whole essence of the area. It feels as a very Artistic and inspiring area. I saw so many things and so many places, making a plan of where I will take my friends and family when they accompany me. This is a must do in Milan. There's a wide vary of restaurants in this area. Excellent for people watching. There were a lot of tourists but it was not over crowded, nor did it felt like a tourist trap. It's a must have local experience. I also did the boat ride tour which was could but not necessary as the ride is kind of short. I was seating in front of the water Ina restaurant for like 3 hours! The waiter in Italy let you enjoy your drinks and meal. They kind of just let you be. In Italy they do not bring you the bill to show you your time has ended as is custom in America. The Italians let you enjoy the moment, la dolce vita, the essence of the place, the laid back vibe, they don't believe in rushing anything. I love the interior clock of the Italian culture. Maybe this is why everyone in Italy feels more calm minded and pleasant? When I was ready to go, like 3 hours later, I had to ask for the bill so I could check out. This was a lovely experience. Come to Naviglio with time to enjoy the present moment with fresh air, great views, sunsets, and excellent food and wine.
