Spending a day in Elgin looking for something to do brought us to the Elgin Fire Barn No 5 Museum…read more I don't think I've ever been to a fire barn/house/department museum before, but as museums go this one was done well. It's not very big, but they've packed a bunch of information and displays in. Dale asked if we wanted to wander about ourselves or have a guided tour and we chose guided tour. Between Dale and James I don't think there's anything in the museum they can't tell you about. Everything you ever wanted to know about the history of fighting fires in Elgin. The displays are all very well done and everything is very well taken care of. If you're in the area and looking for an interesting place to spend an hour or two definitely stop by the Fire Barn Museum. If you're not in the area but interested in fire fighting the trip will be worth it.

I would say I have an avid interest in the paranormal. I've always loved reading about ghost…read morestories, shadow figures, apparitions, orbs, and other phenomenons that challenge the logical mindset. When I saw that Haunted Hometowns had a ghost tour, I booked one and had a really interesting experience. The Tour itself lasts about 2 hours with different stops in the historic Naperville area. Diane is the owner and was our guide for the night. She told ghost tales of horror (did you know there was a huge train crash in Naperville?) as well as stories of history (we learned about the history of Naperville's buildings and its inhabitants). The coolest part of our tour was that one of the other people in the tour had an ovilus device. This uses energies for ghosts/spirits to manipulate words that appear on the screen. My EMF (electromagnetic field detector) which was quiet for most of the night started to go off at a random bush in the historic district. The other guy pulled out the device and the words "Map" and "Priest" came up. The area we were in was right by the old church which was really cool. All in all, it was a decent tour. The stories were fascinating but to be honest I was expecting more of a "ghost hunt" tour (like checking out an abandoned building- minus one star) as opposed to ghost stories at different locations. In a historic building just off Dundee Avenue or Route 25 the museum is easy to get to. The first…read morefloor is dedicated to the origins of Elgin and its founders. More interesting to me is the second floor that emphasizes manufacturing in Elgin, some old Elgin High School memorabilia and more. There are Elgin steel kitchens, Elgin Outboards, Elgin Coffee, Elgin bandsaws and the Elgin Watch Company represented there. Some exhibits are permanent some look like they change. I didn't make it to the third floor to look at old photos. For the $3 admission I'm sure I'll be back.

There's soo many rooms that host events, crafts, exhibits, you name it! There's a huge parking out front & then across from street. There's a cafe here as well! It does have elevator. Right now is Dino exhibit and my one year old enjoyed it! There's so much for kids here including babies! Extremely baby friendly! We'll be back!

This is a very small museum (it's in an old train depot); admission is free. The main room has the…read moreold window where you got tickets and a rotating display - it was on a suburb of Bartlett that no longer exists; mostly text boards and photos. The middle room includes information on people who worked at the depot, including their first female stationmaster and is largely taken up with a display for the kiddies. The final room is a display of photos by a local which are often chosen to print onto local train passes; as the docent pointed out, it was interesting to see how the photos were modified for the final official photo. Unless you have a kid who's interested in the kiddie outreach on trains, this is a 20 minute visit tops, best combined with the small town museum or art gallery if you're in the neighborhood.
