Was in Rostock for a weekend getaway and had dinner here on Saturday night…read more The allure of this place is that they run their own micro brewery, and as far as I'm aware it's the only brewery restaurant in Rostock. The place is located on the edge of a small forest, some distance from the old town but near a tram stop so getting here and back is easy if, as us, you're visiting and staying in the old town. The decor is sort of modern rustic, with lots of wood and earthy colours, and in one end of the restaurant, behind some large windows, you can see the brewery itself. The service is friendly and competent, but it should be noted that at least four different people served us or took orders from us over the evening; this is of course more efficient but it also makes it hard to forget that you're dining at a rather large establishment. I ordered a Braumeister Schnitzel - pork steak covered in breadcrumbs and fried, served with pommes frites (that'd be French fries or chips to Americans and Brits respectively) and a mushroom sauce. The portion was generous but not too big, and I managed to find room for a dessert as well; ice cream with whipped cream and Scwartzwalder cherries (a German speciality). The food was good but not spectacularly so. But let's be honest; my main reason for visiting wasn't the food, and over the course of the evening I had the chance to sample three different in-house made beers. First I had a Weizenbock, an aromatic and flavourful, dark and strong wheat beer that for some reason wasn't on the menu, but it was suggested to me when I made the mistake of asking for the regular Bock after missing the note saying that it's released on May 1st. I would have been perfectly happy with drinking this for the entire evening, but there were other beers that needed a tasting... My second beer was a Dunkles, a darker beer with burned notes and a hint of sweetness. Finally, I had a Märzen, a red, full-bodied beer with a more flowery profile. The beer was balancing somewhere between four and five stars, the food was near the top of the three star category. Combined, that makes for four stars and probably also another visit next time I get the chance.
