Barrett's is a nice, Austin neighborhood cafe. There's not a lot of space or parking, but it is POPPIN. I've gone on weekdays and weekends, and there's always people there. There's some pastries and breakfast tacos. I love that it's dog friendly and the drinks are well made. I will say I didn't really like my black sesame latte though. It didn't taste like black sesame at all. But the other drinks I've had were good! Oh and pro tip: I'm not sure if they still do this, but if you buy a bag of beans, you get a free drink! read more

This is a cute place! I am staying in the area for sxsw and the airbnb guide led me here. When I found the place, it was bumpin, but there was only one barista. Despite being alone, I actually had really speedy service and a nice convo. The vanilla latte he made was really delicious, and I didn't try any food but I'm definitely going back tomorrow for the black sesame latte. The barista was funny, kind and welcoming, (backwards ball cap, glasses, plaid shirt) I'm really glad i stopped in, it was really nice to feel welcomed like that while I am away from home. Rude cashier (one person), mediocre coffee, but great breakfast tacos!! Barrett's happened to be on our way to Barton Springs this weekend, so we made a pit stop and was greeted with the grumpiest cashier...someone woke up from the wrong side of their bed Saturday morning! Slammed my coffee that I ordered right in front of me, and got annoyed when my sister asked what baked goods options there were... We ordered iced caramel lattes and a specialty coffee, the chocolate orange blossom, and they were all MEH. The best part of the morning was eating some breakfast tacos that are outsourced from someplace else, and seems like someone drops off fresh tacos to sell at the coffee shop in the mornings. I was excited to try a new (to me) coffee spot. The person working was amazing. Very helpful, patient, and friendly! My mom ordered a Nitro with caramel. I ordered a Nitro with Chocolate and Hazelnut. Unfortunately, neither of our drinks tasted like anything but Nitro. I also ordered a potato egg taco. Unfortunately, it didn't have much flavor, even with the red sauce added later. I added stuff to it once I got home. My mom ordered a muffin and loved it! This is probably exactly what people are looking for, I unfortunately want to taste the flavors I'm paying to add to my drink. read more

Why 5 stars? Because the nitro was perfect and free with beans! --- --- --- I was mainly on the hunt for nitro, but when I saw they were an actual roasters, it was a bonus. I approached the girl at the counter and said that I definitely wanted a nitro, but I wasn't sure if I was going to get a bag of beans. In an effort to not hold her up, I offered to just pay for my nitro and then I'd come back if I wanted to buy any beans. She pointed out that you get a free drink if you buy a bag of beans, which is such a great idea! I can't tell you how many times I've purchased both at a place, so kudos to Barrett's for that. My nitro? Smooth and perfect. My beans? I went with the Brasil Bahia: Cafe Conquista - Brown Sugar, Chocolate, Cocoa and Caramel. I put them in my espresso maker at home and they were pretty tasty. Found Barrett's via their booth at the annual coffee festival. They were pulling espresso shots for booth attendees which stood out positively amongst the crowd. Their roastery is amazing and they have become a regular for me in terms of stocking my pantry. They sell freshly (w/n one week) roasted premium beans from all major coffee regions and the pricing for their 16oz bags is reasonable. Bonus is the free cafe drink you get with each bag purchase - one of the best price per oz deals in town. The location itself is mediocre - the parking lot is very small and tight to navigate + interior is pretty small. It's on the choppier end of the newer developments so still has some of the rougher edges from being in St. John's. Not factoring this into my review since their coffee rocks and you don't have to necessarily hang out at the coffee shop to benefit from their amazing beans. read more

I really wanted to love this coffee shop, but it's a total miss for me in terms of flavor. The chocolate orange blossom latte tasted unpalatable to me unfortunately. It tasted like a very odd blend of melted down tootsie rolls plus leftover old (?) and artificial orange blossom flavoring. I tried to sip it but my palate just could not accept it, so I ended up throwing it out after. They blew out one of the coffee roasters during peak hours on a Friday and the whole place reeked of burnt coffee the rest of the time I was there. Don't think it's a normal situation for them, though. Otherwise nice atmosphere and much larger on the inside than what I was expecting from the outside. Decent amount of outlets for work but the place fills up quickly so come early for a better spot. I had one of their house specialties which was a Chocolate Orange Blossom mocha and it definitely tasted floral but not really orange. Quite easily the best chai latte I've had in Austin. I'm known to be pretty picky about my chai - I swear some places either make chai that just tastes like a candle from Home Goods during Halloween or chai that is really watery. Barrett's is not like this. Their chai is the right amount of creamy with the perfect amount of spice. I can't recommend it enough. Their banana breads are also AMAZING and come in various selections. My favorite is their Nutella Banana Bread since I always like my bread with a bit of chocolate. It's so moist and not too sweet either. Overall, their drinks are great, the staff is incredibly nice, and their pastries are delicious. They also don't add any extra charge for alternative milks ! I stopped in around 9am on a Sunday and was able to snag a spot in the parking lot. I walked in and loved the atmosphere of the place! There is a large selection of beans and all of the bags have nice notes on the front and the super cute duck logo! There was a short line but the baristas were working hard to get orders in and drinks out (while still making them with care). I ordered a sunrise (breve brown sugar cappuccino) and an iced lavender latte - both were great but the sunrise was my favorite (absolutely delicious)! I enjoyed my visit so thoroughly that I'm going to try to go again during this trip (for a sunrise and some drip) and will definitely be back next time I'm in Austin! Honey buns from Fika - Tbh these aren't perfect but there is something special about the texture and comes in interesting flavors. I've lived in austin for three years and I can't believe this was my first time at Barrett's :( I'm honestly not exaggerating when I say: THIS IS MY NEW FAV COFFEE SHOP IN AUSTIN. I ordered a iced lavender latte w/ almond milk and my oh my! The coffee was so light and had a nice roasted flavor. I love that they did not overdo the milk and/or creaminess. It honestly went down so smoothly. I absolutely loved it and almost finished it as i walked back to the car. I also had such a good experience with the barista. Not only did he offer little pieces of our coffee for free (he didn't charge me for the almond milk, he didn't charge my friend for her coconut milk, and he didn't charge my other friend for her vanilla pump), he also took the time to explain all the coffee beans to me. Yes, after I got on the car I realized i loved the coffee flavor so much that I got back in line to order some beans. He recommended the Mexico blend to me and matched it to my palette of a sweeter, more floral blend. He also allowed me to try it as they had the blend on drip that day. SOO GOOD i fell in love and purchased immediately. He even gave me a token for a free drink on my next visit and i just gotta say i will most definitely be back! One of the best local coffee roasters in Austin! Travis and his team run a great operation. Their beans are fresh and roasted perfectly. I'm a fan of their house blend, St. John's, but like all the flavors I've tried. They have been adapting well since the pandemic and started a delivery service early on which I so appreciated since I live in SE Austin. Their store is open now via window with all the precautions taken so you can swing by and grab a fresh brewed coffee and your beans. Lastly, Barrett's started a local market in their parking lot on Saturday's from 9am to 1pm. I grabbed some fresh baked goods and some trinkets last weekend. But in the last few months, we've been noticing specific baristas have been very rude to us (specifically to us) while super friendly to other people (that are not people of color). It's very disheartening to think we're being discriminated against during this day in age in Austin but the ongoing mistreatments has left us a bad taste in our mouth. I appreciated the parking in the front and on the side, there were plenty of places to park on a saturday morning. Back to the cortado, I REALLY enjoyed this coffee. If I was bringing a friend who appreciated the coffee more than the atmosphere I would bring them here for sure. That being said, Im not sure this is a place I would sit down and study for a while. It has been on my list for a while, as I see it every morning on my commute, but the parking is rather limited, so as a mid-commute stop, it was never ideal.
