We ate at Barobao because it met our two highest criteria at the time: open and near our hotel. We love all Asian food, including bao, so we figured we'd give it a try. They were serving a reduced menu it seemed. There were only a handful of options. But we were starving so we just picked some stuff and crossed our fingers. We ordered the cloudy ramen, which was totally fine ramen but nothing hugely tremendous about it. Still on a nice cold snowy day, it really did hit the spot. My mushroom bao looked good but was very difficult to eat. It was overstuffed and split straight down the middle immediately. It just turned into a real hot mess so I just ate the pieces out of my dish. I did note that the bao buns are stored in a glass case on the counter. I don't know if this impacts the quality of the bun or how long they sit in there, but I did wonder if maybe this didn't help the bun's integrety. But for what it was worth, it WAS tasty. And we got the Korean chicken, which was sticky covered in sauce and pretty decent. Our service was just kind of meh... we were seated and abandoned for about 20 minutes. My husband was actually just about to get up to leave when the waiter finally remembered we were there. In the meantime, another party was seated, provided water and ordered before we were addressed. This is a pretty good little restaurant. We were on the hunt for reasonably priced restaurants which aren't easy to find in Stockholm. We stumbled upon this one and came here for dinner one night. We weren't very hungry and we love bao buns, so that's all we got. We got the duck, chicken, pork belly, and shrimp. The duck and pork belly were really good. The chicken was pretty good too, but I wasn't a fan of the shrimp. The decor inside the restaurant was really awesome. There was a lot of plants integrated a nice wood designs. It's fast casual, so you order at the counter and they bring the food to you. The service is really fast. I would definitely recommend eating here -- especially if you are trying to eat on a budget in Stockholm. read more

The menu is created in a way that you probably should order around 3 dishes, as well as a few sides to the table, to satisfy the hunger. I chose today's catch, which was Swedish tuna served with caviar, ponzu gel, cauliflower puree & moss. Of course I also had to try their gua bao. I ate their porkbelly version, which was a bit to sweet for my liking, but some sriracha made the trick. Additionally, I had to try their vegetarian korean sub. Interesting, innovative & tasty describes my experience of this modern, funky and kind of kindergarden inspired restaurant. It´s the wooden furniture made for shorter people, posters of plants and the funny loo that makes me associate the environment with a preschool. The bao's were tasty, I especially enjoyed the one with kimchi & chicken! The was a dish with salmon, almonds, amarillo and some kind of mayo that was really delicious as well! The green tea & gingerbeer was served in a jar & tickled that tastebuds in all the right ways. It´s not a place I´d spend a whole night however it´s a fresh alternative to other "fast food". I would have really like to love this place. The furnitures are cool, the location is nice (even if it is on one of the busiest streets of Stockholm) and the staff is very kind. And the restrooms are cool. Plates are pretty, a bit small, and really inviting. Ingredients of fillings are good and makes them taste nicely, enough to want more. They recommend to take two to three dishes, but buns taste a lot sugar, and don't contain much fibbers or proteins. Which Made me go to paradiset, the massive organic food store around the corner, right after leaving the place. I would consider the place acceptable to grab a little appetitive before a more serious meal, and it doesn't seem to be the best option of the surroundings when you have gamla amsterdam accross the street and folkoperan in the same block. read more

Great, great, great! The dishes are extremely well composed. Service amazing, tentative, knowledgeable and fast. I had four dishes and could probably have stopped at three... but.. it tasted too good not to take a fourth. I enjoyed the pork belly bao. But it was the 'our take on an egg', 'hiramasa' and the duck slider that really impressed. Especially the 'our take on an egg' was simply amazing! I don't think I ever walked into a restaurant & felt this confused! :) They have a very creative cool interior & interesting menu but no matter how hard you try you can't really figure out what kind of restaurant this is supposed to be until you see the menu starts with " there are no words to describe this place" & then you go: aha, that's why!! I tried the kimchi & the chicken bao which was pretty nice & different. The staff are extremely nice & nice to talk to. It's a very different restaurant than what you might be used to, in a good way. I also loved the creativity both on the menu & interior but I got to say it's way to overpriced for such small portions. By the way, did you know Bao means bread in Thaiwanese & that's a very white, very sweet, extremely soft kind of taco. read more

Get the pork belly bao. I had no idea I'd encounter gua bao (割包, a popular street food item in Taiwan) and was very happy to discover Barobao on my recent trip to Stockholm. Asian classics taken in a hipster direction, well-balanced and flavorful. Also had the yaki pork rib and new potato and was very pleased. If I lived in the neighborhood, I'd be a regular here to tide me over between visits to Taiwan. read more

tl;dr - Tastes ok, looks like McDonalds, is expensive. Bao is a white bread that tastes kind of sweet (lot of sugar). It opens like a pita bread almost and in this place you'll find a couple of bao dishes to choose from with different things inside. They tasted ok, but wasn't enough food. Not enough protein at all in these baos and they'll run you 50SEKish each - you easily need 3 to get anything close to full. The place looks as if McDonalds was a bit more eco. Nothing wrong with that though. Staff was friendly. They usually have cool semi-local beers but they were out when I was there... It's tricky though because the baos are almost like a work of art - and the ppl working here clearly know their craft. The price is really my main issue, it's not foody enough for me to ever consider it worth going here again. Unless they cut the price in half - then it'd be 4 stars. read more

I had the lunch menu here (so sticky rice with tons of pickled cucumber, mushroom, an egg, peanuts etc etc) + added an extra vegetarian bao on the side. They don't offer the regular evening menu at lunch, the sticky rice dish or a bao dish with rice and pickled vegetables are on offer - but service was quick and It didn't affect my meal! The kitchen/counter staff had good energy and were really helpful. The lunch sticky rice dish had a ton of nice little pickled/prepared things to enjoy and was filling- had to add the bao so it upped it from about 100kr into the 150kr territory. Oh well, worth it. Bao was fluffy and fresh, oh and I really want the smokey mushroom recipe. Fun place to go with a friend, I'll have to come in the evening for the bao menu. read more

Ate lunch there today. It kind of felt like the owners had eaten at momofuku and then decided to come back to Stockholm and replicate the flavors...but then forgotten how. The pork belly in the buns was very dry and tasteless. This is quite an achievement given how fatty pork belly is. Maybe they use a different cut of pork but call it belly? They added roasted onions and hoisin sauce to add the flavor back...but then it just tastes like hoisin sauce. The sticky rice was just white rice with sticky texture with sriracha sauce drizzled over the top. No peanuts, spice, shrimp, Chinese sausage, mushroom...nothing at all like the Chinese sticky rice I know and love. I really want to love this place but you guys really need to work on getting flavor into the food. Especially at these prices... read more

On the day I went, they were serving two kinds of buns: shredded pork in hoisin sauce and mushroom with mayonnaise. The pork was way too salty and the idea of putting mayonnaise on mushrooms was repelling. The cabbage/broccoli/cauliflower slaw, however, was delicious. A for effort but not quite up to expectations. I see a few references to Momofuku which is really not fair, but I do expect more from a good bao. My Taiwanese father-in-law argues over which is the best pork belly bun and therefore I had to compare. Sadly like most of the food a bit bland, missing the hot mustard which defines the bun. In fact I note a lack of spicy flavor in all the food I sampled, a cultural aspect perhaps? The beef bao would have been great with horse radish, instead I got mayonnaise? which was a bit nauseating on a fatty piece of beef. Kimchi is a classic found in all sorts of asian fusion but I really wasn't getting the typical flavor, again a lack of spice. Some of the dishes were simply overpriced for what you get, a single spear of asparagus, a single bland egg? I don't mind spending money on tiny bits of perfectly prepared morsels but all the dishes simply missed the mark here. The vibe is definitely hipster, which can be good or bad, place was packed with the twenty something crowd, a crowd which has probably never ventured far from Stockholm but should if they want a more authentic Asian fusion experience. read more

The pork bun was mediocre - when you see a modern pork bun on a menu you'll always compare to momofuku - and it was not even close to it. The bun itself was a bit dry and also pretty big.
