My favourite charity shop on Copson Street - a street swarming with them! The main reason for this…read moreis the manner of the staff. I've occasionally been met with less than enthusiastic responses from other charity shops on that strip when off loading personal donations (be it clothes/toys/games). Help the aged have always taken such donations without any hint of malice (yes - can you believe I've given thousand yard stares by the proprietors of other stores when attempting to donate a bin bag full of decent donationsit's not as though I'm selling crack to them is it?). Besides at least Help the Aged belongs in this decade unlike the other relics further towards the Wilmslow Road end of Copson Street. Perhaps not quite Oxfam territory but the prices are far more reasonable that that shop. They usually have a good set of clothes (usually females fare better for clothes in charity shops than men - their clothes are usually bequeathed from boredom whilst ours are off the backs of the recently deceased. Still, recycling is a good thing.) Books and the usual bizarre items (David Hasselhoff Candlesticks for example) are all set out here. Worth a visit for you bargain hunters out there.

I'd recommend having a quick look through their shoes plus some of their costume jewellery is cute (in the glass cabinet by the till). Why would you go to Topshop and pay for fakes when you can get the real thing that someone's grannie has donated? Back to the shoes- if you're willing to stand a little mark you can get some real gorgeous pairs. Lets face it, you'll wear them once and they'll be marked anyway.. The stock is always kept tidy and it feels brighter than most charity shops; they do normally have loads of VHS videos but I wonder if they don't finally take them down now we're in the midst of a "digital switchover"... There are two changing rooms which are ACTUAL rooms and not just a curtain in the corner.. although if that curtain is even the least bit open, people from the street would be able to see in. A bit disconcerting to say the least. One last note: the staff (well, volunteers) are pretty friendly except when they're about to shut..

I stumbled on this city farm accidentally during a day out to Wythenshawe Park, but it's pretty…read moreamazing! With a few different pens to explore, you can see cows, sheep, goats, pigs, ducks, horses, bulls and birds. In the spring and summer, you can usually see some babies too. Last year, they had some adorable piglets! I think it's a lovely opportunity for city dwellers like me to get close to animals you'd usually only see in the country. Entry is free, but there is an option to make a donation to the Farm, which is a registered charity.

Being a city girl, I don't often get the chance to oooh and awww over cute little baby farm…read moreanimals. Then, myself and a friend stumbled upon this Wythenshaw Community Farm during a day out, and - as soon as I held my first baby chicken, and coo'ed over a teacup sized rabbit, it was love. Wythenshaw Community Farm is a fully working city farm as well as a registered charity, which means they will ask you to make a small donation when you go there. But it's worth it to spend a few hours in the company of sheep, goats, ducks, incredibly friendly pigs, and even a few incredibly cheeky Llamas! (One of which attempted to eat my handbag, the cheeky bugger). Whilst it is full of cute and furry little critters, this is not just another pets corner, so you will see helpers milking, mucking out, feeding and all those other rather unsavoury bits of farmyard life. The farm also provides horse riding lessons if you're looking to don your jodphurs and prepare for your next gymkhana. Wythenshaw Community Farm is a lovely little place, and the ideal place to go if you're wanting to waste a few hours and tickle some pigs under their chin.

Now the centre concentrates on a mix between adult learning courses (something for everyone) and in the evening they run dance classes in the form of "Modern Jive" a great way to have fun, keep fit and meet new friends. It's the kind of places you could easily go to alone and feel relaxed. Quite often on a sunday the car park is a host for the ever popular car boot sales with both indoor and outdoor sites. Well worth keeping an eye on this place. Something different is always happening here.

You would think that Cancer Research UK in Wilmslow would be just like any other Cancer Research…read morecharity shop. But because this charity shop is in Wilmslow, that means that all the clothes and trinkets and things are just that little bit nicer, cleaner and more upmarket. Sorry to play to that whole Wilmslow stereotype that everyone in Wilmslow is a bit posh, but the clothes in this charity shop are really quite good at times! The smart suits in the window tell you everything you need to know.

And yet another charity shop in Bolton. Seriously, these things are everywhere around Newport…read moreStreet! Cancer Research, apart from being a bloomin' great charity to support, have actually made quite a good job of this charity shop here on Newport Street. It's clean and spacious, has lovely, smiley staff and an excellent range of puzzles. Everyone loves a good puzzle. Furthermore, there are lots of trinkets here. You know, cups and sauces. Things for your mantelpiece. That kind of thing. The one mistake that Cancer Research have made with this otheriwse great charity shop is the lack of colour coding in the clothing section. I like to walk in to a charity shop and for the whole thing to look like a bloody great rainbow. An opportunity missed, I think.
