This place is great. We took my husband's car here after moving to Texas and having trouble getting the check engine light off for state inspection. They gave us a free diagnostic and fixed it right up for a great price. They also taped up one of his headlights that was cracked from hitting a deer. We didn't even ask them to do that for us- they just go above and beyond! This is now our go to shop. I often worry that dealership shops over charge me so I'm glad we were told about Barebones and can avoid that. read more

If I could rate them a 1/2 Star or less, I would choose that rating. Sent our daughter there after talking with the owner about checking her oil. Several oil CHECKS in they pressured her into changing her oil-which was NOT needed (using their oil instead of hers that we told them was in her toolbox). When her Dad called to ask them about it, he was told he would teach his kids to make better decisions. Could have called us, but pressured a young girl into unnecessary oil change. read more

Sadly I can no longer recommend Barebones. I have been taking my cars to them for years and always counted on their honest, quality service at an affordable price. I even sent a Lot of business their way! I'm not sure when the change happened, if they are under new management or just aren't hiring quality mechanics that take pride in their work, like they had before, but I can not recommend them to anybody else. I took my Excursion in for a routine oil change (changed like clockwork). Everything seemed fine at first then it began running like crap and the check engine light came on. The following Friday I thought to check the oil, even though I had just had it changed earlier that week and they did Not put my oil cap back on and failed to even tell me. I had to buy a new oil cap and they reimbursed me for it, looked my car over and gave it the ok (not bothering to check the engine light that was on). I was still a little weary about what damage it might have caused not having an oil cap for almost a week with a V10 engine but I took their word for it that it was fine. It was most definitely not fine. The problem continued to get worse and worse every time I drove it until it finally died on me while I was driving. I got it running and it started making an awful noise. I had it towed back to Barebones where they proceed to tell me that now I need a new engine. Only a few miles after their oil cap change mishap... he said "things like this are rare but it happens from time to time". What? Seriously? It took them several days of my car sitting to finally check it out. They quoted me an outrageous amount to replace my engine, after what I believe they did to cause it to break down. I can no longer trust them or the mechanics they hire if they mess up a simple oil change and then I am responsible for paying over $6000. I am a single widowed mother and highly disappointed in this company. I thought I had found a great place to care for my vehicles after my husband died and is no longer around to do so. I feel like me saying something about my missing oil cap may have upset somebody and they retaliated by doing more/irreparable damage to my only car. I am at a loss as to what to do now. How can I trust them to replace my engine correctly if they couldn't even replace an oil cap? I have yet to hear from them but hopefully they will do the right thing and fix what they broke. Otherwise I will continue to post my review and hopefully save somebody else a lot of hassle and a ton of money! Update: All you have to do is read others reviews. If they can't put an oil cap back on then what issues will they cause your vehicle? Do you have thousands of dollars to fix what they mess up? They won't and I sure don't. They are only after money and don't stand behind the quality of their work! Is that something you can afford? I am highly disappointed as well. I thought I had found an honest/reputable auto shop that I could trust and that is not the case, unfortunately. But this issue with needing a new motor has nothing to do with a blown spark plug and most certainly not what I was told. It was actually the coil packs that I have had replaced there and I know I needed a couple more done, when they went out. I have all of the receipts. But that is not the issue here and not one word of that has ever been indicated to me. I have already had it looked at by another shop and they agreed that the need of a new motor was very likely because of my oil cap not being placed back on my vehicle after a simple oil change and driven several miles, without me noticing, until my check engine light came on. I stupidly trusted your mechanic! That part is my fault. I trusted that my oil cap would be put back on after my oil was changed and it simply wasn't. Stephen told me himself, that day, that it could cause major problems (and has on many other vehicles) and apparently it did on mine as well. Yet you are not willing to stand behind your company's workmanship. As I already stated, yes you did reimburse me for the oil cap but that has now caused a much greater issue and I am without my vehicle because a trained "mechanic" forgot to put an oil cap back on? I spoke with Stephen this morning after he called once... several times is a stretch and your lies do not indicated integrity. He also offered no resolution for the problem your company has caused me! So yet another lie. You can wish me the best all you want, it doesn't make up for the fact that your mechanic caused my car to have several thousands of dollars worth of damage and you are not willing to fix the problem your business caused. I should have read the other reviews about your business before even letting anybody at your company touch my car... lesson learned... a very expensive one! Absolutely terrible. Don't waste your time and money! I had to take my car to this place twice, and I regretted a lot. I will never ever take my car there again. Never. 1) They take your car for 10 thousand days. They don't care how inconvenient it is to not have a car. It takes for-e-ver for them to get back to you. I had to call several times for them to finally let me know what was wrong with my car. 2) They could not fix my car AT ALLLLLL! They said they fixed it. I spent $250, and took the car. only 2 days later (I swear), 2 days later I had to stop on the highway because of overheating. I took it to them hoping that they would fix it this time. Nope! I spent another $250. 2 days later, the same thing. I called them. They said "Bring your car, we will take a look" I said "No! That is enough of you taking a look at this car. Every time you take a look at it, I throw $250 in the trash". They were NOT friendly, not helpful, not professional... Terrible terrible experience. read more

The day of the honest mechanic is back! I have taken my vehicle to Barebones twice and both times I have received excellent, affordable service. I took my car to another shop and even asked them if Barebones did the work that they said they did and they said yes and then this other shop wanted to charge me $800 to do brakes, rotors and calipers. Took it back to Barebones and found out that I did not need calipers after all. The staff is extremely friendly and they really go above and beyond to help out the customer. As a woman I am always worried about getting cheated by any mechanic but I feel safe knowing that I will get an honest answer and great services at Barebones! Two thumbs up!!!!! read more

I had been a repeat customer of this place so I decided to take my 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 truck in for repair after it would not start. When the truck broke down I was in a shopping center and had three different gentlemen attempt to help me. All three stated that my fuel pump was the issue. One of the gentlemen stated that he was a mechanic with Classic Dodge of Denton and sees this type of issue all the time with my truck. He even told me to go under the truck with a hammer and hit the fuel tank and it possibly would start. Long story short, I called BareBones and they had my truck towed to their shop. I told them that I believed my fuel pump was out and please call me to let me know what they found. After about a week I called them back and was told that the problem was with my computer and that it would cost $919.00 to fix and I should be back on the road again. After being told that I needed a day to think about it because I was not planning on spending that much money to get my truck fixed. I discussed the issue with my brother who loaned me the money. I called BareBones back and told them to go ahead and fix my truck. Another week goes by when I receive a call from BareBones stating that they got the computer in the truck but now there is an issue with the fuel pump and to get that fixed it would cost $1382.00. I could not believe what I was hearing and had the representative from BareBones explain to me how first it was my computer that was keeping the truck from starting and now it was my fuel pump, which I had initially told them was the issue. He proceeded to tell me this was that and this lead to this and....so on and so on. I trusted this business with my truck but feel I got RIPPED OFF. I feel like they did not diagnosis my truck properly. It was as if they were practicing which ended up costing me $1382.00. My only recourse is to warn others about this business through YELP and to never ever darken their door again with business. I have that right as a paying customer. It is so refreshing to find an honest business these days and even more so to find one that is affordable. I also use Bare Bones for my own vehicles too! Two BMW's and a Chev Suburban. Barebones Automotive is the best mechanic shop I have found in the area. I have been taking my car here for over a year, and am very satisfied. John is very knowledgeable, friendly and professional, but most importantly, he is a very honest and trustworthy mechanic. I have had situations where another mechanic told me I needed my rear differential fluid changed (for over a hundred dollars,) but it didn't sound right to me; John confirmed my suspicions. He said it was not yet time for it to be changed, and that the other guys hadn't even looked at the fluid; the cap was stuck and hadn't been opened in several months. My car stop running, called these guys and in about 30 to 45 minutes had a tow truck coming and get it... I loved the way they treated me and my husband, always explaining and calling to update us... The reason why I give it a 3 star is because 1st they ordered the wrong engine and the quote ended up being $400 dollars more (they are humans so they make mistakes, I know) and because I told them that one of the plug things in the engine was just changed and, if they didn't use it on my new engine, I wanted it back so I could take it back, well they didn't use it, ended up charging me 4 more of those because the engine didn't come with it and didn't give mine back... I do understand that they have a lot of people and cars in and out but that's the reason why they have computers, to keep all the information...
