But for me the £9 cut sufficed well enough, and seeing as I live near I will probably come again.

Offering the whole knife grinding, wet shaving, classic cutting shebang, it's the attention to the traditional barber experience that really sets this place apart. Like a male-grooming TARDIS, the inside reveals a surprisingly spacious interior and a step-back in time with the lovingly restored fittings reclaimed from a 1920s Chicago barbershop. With just two chairs (authentic of course) and the owner on hand, you are treated to twenty-five years of experience and a history lesson thrown in for good measure. Forty-five minutes later my partner emerged smooth and sweet-smelling with what he described as the closest and most enjoyable shave of his life, complete with head massage and moisturising treatment. I'd recommend booking an appointment. As a one-man operation, the personal touch comes at the expense of a guaranteed drop-in spruce up. Also, the authentic experience comes at a price with the traditional wet shave coming in at £28. I would definitely recommend to any hirsute gents looking for an indulgent groom, but perhaps pop into your local barbers for your regular trim.

I couldn't be more happy with the style. Going from long hair to short hair is a drastic change, but the barbers here are skillful and efficient. Not only did they provide an amazing cut, but they were open and honest about advising what styles would best fit my head's shape. They recommended products for my specific hair type and I walked away completely satisfied. Do yourself a favor and step back into the 1920's with these hand-crafted stylists. The Den is a tiny barbershop located just off Queen's Road. It is called The Den because as far as barbers go, it is probably the closest you're going to get to being one. I am a big fan of this lovely little lair. It is small, but perfectly formed with comfortable leather waiting bench; flat-screen TV; magazines and a single old-school barber's chair. Despite its size, The Den doesn't feel pokey. Like a den, it has everything you want and it also has the added benefit of being surprisingly light and airy. Richard is the dude who'll do your 'do. He's friendly and very professional and unlike most barbers in this price range, actually listens to what you say to him. This means you can come out with a hairstyle that you don't need to cover with a hat for weeks due to shock and embarrassment.

On the front of the shop there are the old fashioned barber's red and white striped props, something that didn't fill me with hope (Mum took me to a barber as a child and let me get hair cuts that made me look like a large mushroom). The gentlemen who cut my hair was friendly and knowledgable though, asking me how I wanted my hair cut and what I wanted it to look like. He pretty much hit the nail on my head in terms of my request, leaving me to depart feeling pretty well happy.

Only four people in my life have ever cut my hair…read more My Mum. Two barbers in Brighton that shall not be named. One of the guys from Male Concept. I've been back to Male Concept five times now. I'll be going back a sixth time for a half priced hair cut. Finding a barber you trust is a real blessing.
