I forgot all about this as I thought it would be done. During all of this, I'm a long distance 18 wheel car hauler (on the road most of the time), and eventually coming home for good as my wife was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Just yesterday I received a letter in the mail that said these so called lawyers that I hired, went to court NOT TO CLOSE MY MOTHERS PROBATE, but to cancel working for me because I had told them that I thought they were over charging me each month for minimum work! I lost my wife of 40 years on September 17, and I am devastated, lost, and having a hard time just existing. I also have been spending weeks driving to Florida and back taking care of my 89 y/o father who is having dementia issues. What is wrong with these people??? They went to court not to close this probate case but to get permission to cancel their contract with me! The paper stated that I was served to be there, but again I never was! Stay away! If I had, I would've noticed a very important term was left out of the agreement costing me several hundreds of dollars a month. Subsequently I learned from a different attorney such a term was basic and should've made it in. Mr. Burney assured me after the hearing that term was in the agreement, and later it became obvious he was unfamiliar with the agreement. I also learned that the law firm initially served the defendant papers requesting a different kind of custody arrangement and living arrangement than I had approved, so the defendant ended up being angry with me for almost year, and I did not know why. I stopped using Burney's law firm and plan to represent myself in this final phase. Do not use The Law Office of Rhett Burney for family court. They seem to have too many cases, not enough staff but also too many cooks in the kitchen, and some integrity issues. The staff members who answer the phones, correspond via email, set up appointments, etc. - basically the paralegals and legal assistants - were phenomenal. I'll give Burney that - as soon as he finished assuring me that term was in the agreement, he asked me to scan a QR code so that I could leave a positive review for a couple of his assistants. So, we were hopeful and excited to learn more and begin the process of becoming adoptive parents. I've read a lot of adoption books and articles, joined the social groups online, etc., but the information overload was real and we wanted to meet in person and talk to a real people. So, we drove an hour and a half to Mr. Godwin's office opting for a face to face rather than virtual meeting. The attorney we met with was fantastic. She was very personable, excited to provide information and seemed genuinely glad to be able to help and share her story, as well as learn ours. As an adoptive parent herself, she was able to clarify some things and really gave us some great insight into the process. My husband and I were so happy to meet her and felt like we could be moving in the right direction. However, that feeling vanished when we met with Marion, the woman who handles the matching of adoptive and biological parents. When Marion walked in the room all the energy and comfort went out of the meeting. It almost seemed as if she took one look at us and decided we were not worthy of her time or having a child. She was very condescending telling us "not to cheap out on a home study because she doesn't have time to train people to do their jobs." She then begrudgingly provided us with a few names of home study providers after I mentioned the attorney said that Marion would have those names and phone numbers. She was also rude when I asked about the family books that they kept to provide as examples for adoptive parents (also mentioned by the attorney). She sighed and said "yeah we have some over there," pointed and huffed as she got up and threw the books on the table for us. At the end of the meeting, my husband and I both felt like Marion walked in to that room, took one look at us and decided that we weren't worthy of her time or a child. Sure, she may have been having a bad day, we all do, but she is the person who directly presents a birth mother with adoption candidates. And after our experience with her, it is really difficult to put our trust and faith in the process and feel like we're being fairly represented when we feel like she's already judged us and can't be bothered.
