I can't wait to come back to this place again and again! First off- the service was incredible. There was only two servers and the bartender. Our server was very attentive and knew when to check in with us. He gave us good information regarding the food and drinks, which is always appreciated! The drinks- excellent. I can't recall the name of my drink, but it was gin based and very tasty. The on tap list is very good as well- including many local beers. The food- phenomenal. We started with the duck confit poutine which was HUGE! Shared between three people and we couldn't finish it. We have traveled to Montreal many times and love our poutine, and this poutine definitely was a favorite of ours! The cheese curds were big and plentiful which is a bonus. I ordered the mac and cheese which has a nice truffle addition to it. Huge portion and amazing flavor- can't go wrong. The two other dishes order was the shrimp and grits and country fried chicken. The shrimp and grits had a unique spin to it and was accompanied with pork belly which tasted fantastic. The country fried chicken was also very tasty and had a side of sweet potato mash which was stellar. Overall- excellent restaurant. Great first impression here today. I ordered the charcuterie from the appetizer menu and it was fantastic -- finely sliced cured meats, fresh grapes, and a a diverse assortment of pickled accoutrements. My favorite components were the champagne cheese and fig jelly. The menu was full of interesting meals and inventive cocktails, and they have a wide selection of local beer on tap. The portions are very generous; my friend got an order of Bar One fries (topped with rosemary and parmesan cheese, with garlic aioli for dipping) and the whole table had to help him polish them off. I rarely find myself in Milford but I can absolutely see myself coming back again when I'm next in town. read more

Great. Just came for the first time after many recommendations, usually such highly recommended spots disappoint, this did not. First, it's a cool spot, cozy but not cramped. It was a Friday about 530pm and it was full and energetic, but quiet enough for two people to sit and talk. Our server, Camden, was attentive, personable and had good suggestions. The food was great, we got the fried chicken, po boy wrap, and house fries. It was all delicious but the fried chicken was sinful and I sometimes dream about it at night. We were left at our table for 30-45 minutes without a final check and also a refill on water. Would we go back? Yes. Again the food, cocktails, and ambience were excellent. We had driven past this place several times, always saying "we should go there!" Well, we finally did; we were very impressed! The decor is very hipster Art Deco: Edison lightbulbs, dark wood, and geometric art. We sat, and were quickly given cold water in a glass jug for the table and a basket of homemade chips. The chips were good, but not amazing. Then, we ordered drinks from the extensive drink menu! I had a delicious Sazerac, my mother had a well-made dirty martini. Both were very reasonably priced. Our dinners were the real star. She had the Thai Duck Wrap, and absolutely loved it. She chose sweet potato fries on the side, and they were amazing. Crispy and soft on the inside! She took half home and had it for lunch the next day - it was just as good the next day! I had the Bar One Burger. Amazing. The Bar One fries on the side had truffle oil, Parmesan, herbs. Amazing. We had high hopes for this place as the reviews on yelp are really good, but after our experience this past weekend, 3 stars are all I can muster. We showed up around 5:15 on Saturday night with a line inside. With 3 other parties in front of us and two empty tables in the dining room we assumed it wouldn't be long before we were seated. We also told the hostess that we would sit at the bar if something were to become available. Unfortunately it took awhile before anyone was seated at the two empty tables. "The kitchen is overloaded right now so we are trying to space things out for them". Okay, fine. We understand, but when a party of 1, who arrived AFTER us, is seated in one of the empty tables we've been staring at since we got here is seated BEFORE us, and we are not even offered the option of refusal, we were pretty annoyed. We didn't say anything as we were told that we would be seated next. Okay, fine. Ten minutes later, 2 seats open up at the bar so we start heading to the bar to sit down. As soon as we get there, the same person who told us we were next to be seated tells us, "I'm sorry, but you can't sit there, I've already given those seats away". ARE YOU SERIOUS? We were honestly stunned. She was actually going to allow the same woman who was seated before us to have one of the seats at the bar instead of us because that is where she preferred to sit. My husband had to go speak to the hostess to remind her that we were there before the party of 1 and she completely overlooked us, TWICE. "I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were here before her". Whatever. Needless to say we ended up sitting at the bar. We ordered the Uinta Jacked B Nimble- Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Pumpkin Stout(AMAZING BEER) and their house Chardonnay. No wine list, just a house wine for reds and whites which were average at best. JUST A NOTE ABOUT THE BAR - A few people here have commented about the short pours where their drinks look like someone has already had a few sips from their drink when it arrives and I can confirm that they are just short pours. Consistently short pours too as every drink we watch them make was short. For food we ordered the veggie pot stickers, veggie trio, pumpkin chili and the mushroom pizza. The mushroom pizza was very good, but the rest of the food was honestly average. $9 for a plate of nacho chips with 3 small, and I mean small, dishes of tomatoes, tahini and guacamole is saying a lot for that dish and it didn't hold up to that expectation in the least. Had I known that the food was average, we wouldn't have waited as long as we did to be seated and we certainly wouldn't have put up with the way we were treated by the hostess. The overall restaurant is tastefully done with a decent list of beers on tap and a very creative menu. This place has a lot of potential, but the owner will need to make sure her staff knows how to treat guests before we will be back to give it another go. read more

After living in walking distance of the Milford Oval for years, I can say I have tried almost everything the current restaurants have to offer ( Red Arrow/J's Tavern, Pasta Loft, Amigos, etc..). Bar One brings a long overdue breath of fresh air into the oval... FINALLY. Everything is done correctly here - the exact opposite of what the Barking Monkey provided in this same location before Bar One took over.. Atmosphere: First off, the decor of Bar One is classy and refined. I love the relaxing reggae style music they play here! Bar seats are comfy and so are the high top table seats. Having seating outside is also a nice touch! The only thing missing seems to be cushions in the booths...but that doesn't take away from the experience. I overheard the owner saying that her mother actually designed the shelves behind the bar and many of the pieces of art hanging around this place. Nice job mom! Drank: This place hands down has the best draft beer selection in the Oval. With about 13 or 14 different beers on tap which have included Champlain Cider, Guinness, Stoneface IPA, Cranberry Gose, Burn the Ships and many more! Beer snobs like myself will not be disappointed here! They also have a fantastic selection of mixed drinks here. I love Moscow Mules and their take on one is fantastic! Also, check out their instagram to see pictures of their Bloody Mary. It looks crazy good! Planning on trying one soon.. Food: Right when you sit down you'll be brought some freshly made bar one chips. They are delicious! This place even serves water in a fancy bottle which somehow adds to the experience here. I'm planning on trying most things on this menu but here is what I have tried so far: BLT - 100% the best BLT I have ever had. The candied bacon was cooked perfectly and the pepper relish added the perfect kick. Chicken and Waffles - The waffle is made out of sweet potato and it is fantastic! Bourbon Bacon Maple Syrup is added on top which adds a sweet but spicy kick! SO good. The chicken is also cooked to perfection which makes this dish a winner by far. Smoked Mac and Cheese - Cheesy, gooey deliciousness and garlic bread. Not much more that needs to be said Up in Smoke Burger - Honestly one of the best burgers I've ever had. Fried onion, jalapeno and gouda... mouth is watering just writing this.. Mac and Cheese flatbread - It sounds like a weird thing to have on a flatbread, but with gouda and bacon it is perfect. Definitely will be trying out the other flatbreads here.. Chef Amy really deserves an award. Hands down best food in the oval. A+ Service: Everytime I have been here the service has been nothing short of exceptional. Fast and friendly. We arrived around 6:30 and was told it would be a 45 min wait, which was expected. We got a place at the bar after about 40 mins. The atmosphere is very warm and it's really cute and cozy inside. I can't speak for the service on the floor, but the bar service was pretty slow. Didn't get our drinks or put in a food order until 30 mins of being seating. I understand being short staffed due to covid so I know it isn't something to be upset about. The bartender was friendly and he was the only one behind the bar so he was busy. The food was....SO delicious! The smoke burger was absolutely unreal, the chicken tenders were huuuge and so tasty. Everything was good it made up for the slow service. Upon arrival very prompt acknowledgment from the owner/hostess. We sat at the bar as we waited for a chair or table to open up, we got a table after a short wait. Server was lacking, I asked her for suggestions on apps and due to being a vegetarian, she said she could only tell me what people have ordered most in the past. Ordered Jerk wings, and Hush puppies, I was excited after reading the menu description, wings were crispy and moist, could have used less time in the fryer and more time being seasoned. Pups came out very dense, and very dry, no real flavor, they were sitting on a lightly sauced bed of greens, we asked for honey mustard for dipping, she forgot, 10 min later, she came back and realized she didn't bring it. At this point I also ordered a second beer and more water, they had been empty for 10 minutes. Beer comes, 5 minutes later she drops a bottle of Market Basket honey mustard at the table..... It did not help the Pups, we could not get them down. Entrees came to us in a very reasonable amount of time. I ordered the picnic after seeing it on the yelp website, the wife got an apple and bri melt with sweet potato fries, came with ketchup, didn't notice until after the server left, she said she would ask for BBQ when the server came back to check on us. Except for the lack of preferred dipping sauce due to the server not coming back to check on us, the sandwich and fries were great. My meal the picnic, shrimp was great, spicy and moist, pulled pork also very good, mac and cheese two thumbs up as well as the slaw, corn had great flavor, immense amount of butter. Unfortunately, I tried the wild boar sausage first, it was cold, not even room temp, pushed to the side and enjoyed the rest. After finishing we had about 10 minutes until our server came back to ask us how our meal was.......? Lookin' for a place that is close by, serves local brews and has some incredibly tasty food? A place you can take your big city friends? Well, it's finally here! So, so SO happy this place opened in my little town! It's like a breath of fresh and tasty air! In this small town we have lots of great things you usually only find in larger cities, but a gastro pub was seriously missing. We have a tiny and thriving downtown "Oval" where you can find all sort of local stuff, and now we have Bar One too! So my husband and I went on opening night, around dusk which was a crazy busy mess. The three or four women working the place were level-headed and profusely apologetic for their inability to get through the crowd quickly enough to serve the throngs of folks who were so hungry for this place to open.* *Here I must fault them for sending out teaser photo posts of their food and drinks on Facebook for weeks before opening... Not fair guys (or gals) c'mon! We were only able to order one brew each, a local beer (yay, Able Ebenezer!), and sat outside in one of the two bafflingly empty tables. While people were cheek to jowl inside, we leisurely enjoyed our drink while we perused their small but tempting menu. Right then and there we planned to come back at a time when the staff was less busy and try some items on the menu. A week or so later we came back with two friends on a lazy Sunday afternoon. We were there right after opening for a brunch sort of test. We are an adventurous group willing to try anything once. There are many places that put things on the menu to say they have it, or to try something elaborate to impress the clientele, unfortunately many places don't have the know-how or capability of pulling it off successfully -- Bar One is not one of those places. They have put a small array of what they know how to do REALLY well! When they aren't busy the staff really shines as they are all keenly focused on pleasing their customers. They are helpful with menu suggestions and knowledgeable about the chef's offerings. This seems to be the type of place where everyone who works there will help everyone else out. When we went, there was only one waitress, the chef and the bartender. We were served by all of them! Even the chef came out with a small accompaniment to one of the dishes she forgot to add to the plate before it was served! Not like we would have even known it was missing. They were all really pleasant and it made for a truly enjoyable meal While they have a small menu, they offer something for almost everyone from gluten-free, to vegetarian, to serious carnivores as well. The blistered shishito peppers were a real treat and something I hadn't seen or tried before. The buffalo cauliflower was a huge appetizer and really yummy. They have a great bloody mary, but also offer to doll it up with all sorts of tasty accoutrements. The hubby tried the candied bacon with his bloody and it also came with a panko-encrusted shrimp. The salads are delicious with super fresh greens and perfectly dressed. One of the few places in town where you can get a real classic poutine or even their take on southern chicken and waffles -- all done with a serious foodie twist. I must say none of us had room to try any of their dessert offerings, but with food this good I can't wait to try whatever they offer next time! We came here for dinner on a Friday. There was about a half hour wait but we appreciated that they take your phone number since there isn't a lot of waiting room if the bar is full. When we sat down it did take quite a long time for the waitress to greet us and take our order. It was busy but not a huge place either. The drinks were great and the find was better. We had brussel sprouts that were to die for, buffalo fried cheese curds and shared the mushroom pizza. The cheese curds were very crispy and delicious. After just a couple of visits, Bar One is one of my favorite restaurants - great craft cocktails (they also infuse some of their spirits in-house) and and even better food. They are closed two days a week and only open for dinner, so you know they have everything fresh. Several of the dishes are elevated versions of comfort food dishes, like Chicken and Waffles or Shrimp and Grits. Every bite I've had has hit the spot, and the space itself is a really fun place to be. I now live in Milford and look forward to visiting this gem regularly. read more

Bar One recently opened in Milford - a great little restaurant and bar. They have a couple of outdoor tables and big windows to see out onto the street if you want. Went here with my dad and got the Quinoa and veggie burger with a Moscow mule - my dad got a burger and fries with a beer. Our server was super friendly and fast. The food was great! Even my dad raved about his burger (he's a tough sell). The Moscow mule was a bit strong but still quite delicious. The menu was very reasonably priced and a good variety of American food. I came here with a couple girl friends for a (rare) mom's night out and we were all really disappointed. The service was not only slow, but our server had an attitude with us from the start.. we sat without menus for about a while before someone came by, she asked what she could get us and we said we're just waiting for menus, and she said ok well they are here now, and walked away... maybe she was having an off night. The food was decent but the service really ruined it for us, we were missing an order, my meal came out about 10 minutes after the rest of the group, there was a piece of glass in my friend's drink and to top it off the bill was incorrect and they didn't even comp the glass drink. I'm afraid for us the Bar One hype was far greater than the experience. We thought it was okay, but not great. My husband and I went early (4:45PM) on a Saturday after everyone insisted if you don't get there right when they open you will be waiting. We could have easily waited until 5:30 and possibly had a slight wait. You seat yourself so we picked one of the few remaining regular-height tables. The place is small but cute, no complaints there. The hostess stopped over with menus and said water and housemade chips were on the way. I'm going to throw in a little pet peeve here - my menu had a huge glop of some sauce on the top. It's a small place with not many menus to manage. They should be regularly cleaned during the night. It's gross. My husband was unimpressed with the beer menu, which is written on chalkboards throughout the bar. There wasn't anything particularly unusual or inspired about it, and he ended up with a beer we can get just about everywhere. Bummer, because so many have raved about the beer list. The cocktail menu had a pair of vodka cocktails that were appealing to me. I ended up with a raspberry martini. I will say, this was the highlight of the meal. It was one of the best cocktails I've ever had, at least in recent memory! Vodka, strained raspberry puree, thyme, lemon, some bitters. Very good...and VERY strong! With waters poured, drink orders taken, and an appetizer decided, we still hadn't received any chips. Drinks arrived, appetizer arrived, and I finally had to ask our waitress if she could bring us some of the house made chips everyone talks about. They arrived and were underwhelming. They were overcooked to the point of being bitter so we didn't eat them. The poutine appetizer arrived and it is ridiculously huge. It comes on a square dinner-sized plate mounded with poutine. The fries were fine. I assume for a place that is supposed to be upscale bar food that they were made in-house but I personally couldn't tell. The garlic curds were delicious, but over powered by a thick, heavy, dark gravy. I couldn't taste the duck but there was definitely some in there. Overall it was fine but just not great and I definitely wouldn't order it again. I would suggest they offer half portions, or at least advise a table of 2 about the size of the serving. I mentioned that to our waitress who literally shrugged and said, 'yeah, it's a big portion'. I was too full from the poutine so instead of ordering one of the sandwiches/entrees, I chose the veggie potstickers as a main course (another plug for a half-sized poutine plate. They could have upsold me to an entrée if I wasn't so full from the appetizer!). My husband ordered the chicken and waffles. The potstickers...where to start. They just weren't good. Spinach, edamame, corn (corn!), the menu said tofu although I didn't exactly see any in there, there might have been ground cabbage. Just an odd flavor profile that I didn't enjoy. The sauce was worse - a thick, brown, sweet concoction that I didn't like. My husband enjoyed his chicken and waffles. I tasted them right when they came out and they were fine, although already soggy because they arrive with syrup already poured over them instead of in a little pot on the side so you can add it yourself. The seasonal veg was asparagus, which was way over-grilled and dry. That came home as chicken food, along with the rest of the poutine and the potstickers. The waitress was bringing our check when we asked about the dessert menu. They had one dessert - a strawberry cheesecake something - but it wasn't suitable to take home and we weren't ready for dessert so we passed. With that she was ready with our check and to turn our table. The prices were reasonable. I'm rating Bar One based on this one visit. We have decided we will give it another try because so many other things on the menu looked appetizing, we will just order completely different things next time. The vibe leans upscale, so I find myself scanning the menu seeking beet salad, tuna tartar, and other bistro fare, but what I find is nachos and greasy wraps. Perhaps because of that dichotomy, I am perpetually disappointed. My recommendation is: enjoy the bar for the adorable ambiance and good beverage selection. Maybe get some nibbles. This place has decent drinks and a good kids menu. On a Friday evening at 6 pm, this place was packed with young singles and couples, no other kids. We were seated in the back at a small table next to a door propped wide open with cold air blowing in. It's only 58 degrees outside, so I think I'll keep my jacket on. Here's a summary of our food selections: Hush puppies, tasted dry without very much of the sauce over some arugula. Kids mac and cheese tasted mostly like butter pasta with some cheese mixed in. There's no breadcrumb topping. At least it's only $5 and includes milk. A lot of other places either have no kids menu or nickel and dime you for milk. I got buttermilk chicken, which had a nice crunch and was served with brown gravy. The accompaniments were disappointing. Roasted Brussel sprouts were saltier than the ocean. Carolina rice tasted like rice pilaf out of a box. The cornbread was more like vanilla and cornmeal pound cake. It was cloyingly sweet and way overdone with vanilla without a corn kernel in sight. My husband's shrimp and grits had a grand total of 4 shrimp. The flavor was good, but they then give you a gigantic bowl of grits, so proportions were off. At the end of the day, if i were to go back, it would just be for drinks and nachos, fries, or other bar food. The drinks were very good, albeit slow to arrive. The only other major problem is the incredibly snail-paced service, so maybe just sit at the bar. I think this was isolated to one person, though, because other folks seemed attentive and nice. We were never asked if we wanted more drinks, even when we sat with empty drink glasses for an hour. Our entire water bottle for refilling glasses was empty. I had to ask for another bottle to quench my thirst from the heavily salted food. We were never asked how our meal was until the end when I flagged her down to ask for our check, a box for leftover mac and cheese, and more water. She took my plate and asked if it was ok since I had so much food leftover. When I stated that the Brussels sprouts were too salty, she made a statement that I must have personally felt they were too salty as if I must just have sensitive tastebuds. I told her that my husband tried them and thought the same. I always season my food well at home with plenty of S&P, but this was over the top. She then seemed insulted that I told her the truth, and didn't bother to apologize or say that she would let the chef know. She also served other tables that arrived after us their food first. When she finally brought our entrees she didn't bother to remove our appetizer plates, and there was no room left on our table except near our toddler who would surely chuck it on the floor, so I literally had to put my appetizer plate on the floor. She then seemed mad and came over to pick it up. No apology whatsoever for not taking our plates sooner but just attitude. We left a 15% tip only because of having a high chair, but I would have given much less if it was just us for this horrendous service. Overall, a disappointment. Love the food concepts but poor execution and service. read more

Huge bar and only one bartender. She was hopping! Drink menu had lots of interesting options. I had the Blackberry Smoked Sage Margarita which was good but too sweet for me. More to try next time. The menu had just the right amount of options. I ordered the Duck Fat Poutine from the starters. It was my first Poutine and it was tasty. Too much for one person which it would have been good to know. I ate it for three days! My one problem with the experience was the lack of staff attention. Not enough bartenders for the huge bar.
