Visiting Merida for a month, we walked past this cantina many times, and decided to drop in one day and see how it was. We had been a little concerned by the label "Dive Bar".
BUT ... we couldn't be more pleased that we went. This place is not "fancy", but it is a great Rock n Roll bar, with an excellent selection of icy cold beers, and the tastiest botanas (little snacks that are complimentary with your drinks). Although our Spanish is weak at best, the staff are warm and friendly, and made a great effort to make us feel welcome.
It is quiet weekdays in the early afternoon, as it seems to be busier after work, and Fridays. They have live rock bands playing on occasion too.
After spending a few days in Progreso and paying higher tourist prices, it was a pleasure to come back to Merida and Bar Leon Negra, where you get real value for your pesos. Nothing pretentious here ... good music, cold beer, uncomplicated good food, and friendly service. What more can you ask for from a neighbourhood bar?
Looking forward to coming back again next year. read more
