Atmosphere and the music is nice and the food looked good. But the pulled pork burger was dry and the chips were meh. But worst of all was the service. 25 mins to get a drink and the place was not even half full. Waitress told us she never saw us? The place is 30m big. Fail.

In Salamanca Square you will find this popular meeting place. Bar Celona offers seating outside allowing you to enjoy a cool beverage on a hot summer day or warm seating inside for a more cozy atmosphere. The food is creative and delicious but a tad on the pricey side.

Great food and great music. Awesome atmosphere. Best tapas this side of Spain. A unique place in Hobart - real buzz. Visit for sure.

Society is the only place I actually want to drink in Salamanca. I tend to avoid that corner of…read moreHobart, because it's touristy and gross, but it's so nice to know that somewhere like Society exists down there and I can take refuge there. The gin selection is exceptional and there's always a gin of the week, which is a great opportunity to try a gin you may not have encountered before. Society also now makes their own tonic syrup in house, and I believe they're the first place in Hobart to be doing that. ALL THE KUDOS! It's such a special sort of offering and shows how much they care about their drinks. Also back to gin again, Society do gin tasting platters... correct. Half nips of four different gins (be it a Tasmanian platter, an Australian platter or a tailored platter) with a splash of tonic and a garnish to suit each different gin. A really fun way to try a few different variations in one sitting, because gins can be so different! I LOVE GIN! There are always plenty of events happening at Society too, all posted on their facebook, from regular weekly events like Tapas Tuesday to one-off events like fundraiser dinners and spirit masterclasses.

This Thursday was raclette night and they take bookings for the few tables they have for a 6pm or 8pm seating - we booked 8pm but decided to sit on one of the comfy couches. The raclette was delicious and a generous portion of melted and crispy raclette cheese and prosciutto over potatoes with a bit of salad for $15. There is a huge selection of spirits though we had a nice bottle of Cabernet which was also good value.

Dier Makr has all the ingredients to make me fall in love with it (restaurant style, not marriage…read morestyle), and yet... I walked away underwhelmed. Or, not really... maybe just whelmed (are we in France?). Here's the thing--recounting individual dishes after my dinner date, I was pretty excited about each (though the main flavour of the night was "salty"), but my response for the entire dinner was "it was ok". I think it felt like it was missing a main meat course, or something, like the big shebang wasn't there? I'm confused and upset. The thing about Dier Makr, though, is that the menu is seasonal and changes month to month and sometimes (often?) week to week, so I only need to give it a few weeks and it'll be different, and I'll give it another chance, and perhaps then I'll be blown away. Watch out for the update, I guess. Side note: if I was rating this on drinks alone, it would get five stars. The first time I visited was just for drinks (and a couple of bar snacks), and after a round or two of menu item cocktails (all delicious) my friends and I challenged the bar with a couple of rounds of specific orders, which they totally knocked out of the park. We left that night a little bit in love with the place. Before the cocktails, we shared a bottle of wine, which came with a little handwritten note of staff opinion about the wine. Every single wine in the cellar had one. I wanted to read through that cellar like it was a library. Honestly, five stars.

In our last night on the island, we hopped down to Peacock and Jones for dinner. It's on the…read moresection of town that Peacock and Jones (two separate individuals) apparently had jam empires located back in the day, so the decor when you step in is basically the same as it was in the past - lots of old brick structures with some concrete filled in here and there for repairs over the years. As such, it's got a bit of a cozy hipster vibe. Getting seated was pretty quick, and the service was also quite quick as well - we were done with our meal in a little over an hour. The drink selection isn't all that large; I ended up sticking with a glass of local red, which was alright but nothing too spectacular. As for the food...sadly, I came away pretty disappointed. We started out with a table salad and grilled octopus as the appetizer, both of which fell short of the mark. The salad was just lettuce in a bowl and nothing else - there was a faint whiff of vinaigrette, but that was it. The octopus, while it had a nice curry sauce with it, was cooked poorly - a rubbery, chewy texture that is what you try to avoid with this dish. The mains were a bit better; my dry-aged strip loin had pretty solid flavor (although it was a bit dry), and the slices were a bit on the thicker side. My wife's duck missed the mark a bit, IMO - while the flavor was pretty standard, the slice was way too thick, and each bite was pretty chewy. Perhaps I got my expectations up a bit high - Peacock & Jones showed up on some of the 'Best Of' lists when looking at where to dine in Hobart - but sadly, I don't think the cuisine would be worth another visit. I did enjoy the ambiance, and the waterfront / old industrial location is nice, but it doesn't offset the food missing the mark.

I would come back to Peacock and Jones again if just for the service. I'd made a booking for our group of four (super easy online) and didn't know much about the layout but was utterly delighted to be led through the small bar-style restaurant out the back to a little courtyard. After such a warm day, sitting out there was stunning (but I'm expecting it to get more than a little cooler out there over winter and will be interested to see how they handle it). The food itself was also kind of perfect. The menu isn't huge, but full of delicious bits and pieces that can change not just every night, but even by the hour. Our meal started with fresh bread and butter, and my only disappointment for the evening is that the profiterole entrees weren't available that night (it just means I'll have to go back, though, which can't be a bad thing). We ate the salt ling fritters, french fries, heirloom tomatoes, chicken liver parfait, and the meat for two, which was a lamb shoulder. I said the menu changes by the hour because there were a couple of lamb shoulders left by the time we got to ordering, or there were roast chickens (we quickly bagsed a shoulder). Everything was outstanding and capped off with the gingerbread creme brulee, because how could we not? Possibly the best brulee I've ever had, and served in a BOWL. No little plopped out brulee mould for Peacock and Jones diners, no sir! The four of us agreed we could easily come back just to eat the fries and the brulee any day... so that's ilkely exactly what we'll do. Treat yourselves! P.S. the "thank you" text message after we left for the evening was the cherry on top. You absolutely won me over, P&J. Nicely played.

This place reminded me of one of my favorite restaurants in Brooklyn while miles away in Hobart Tasmania. The vibes were impeccable. People were singing along to the record player that filled the room with sweet ballads and sing-alongs. On top of that the dining area shares a space with the kitchen so you pretty much get to watch as the chef prepares everything to order. Now, of course, there are some premade portions to the dinner, but nonetheless seeing the chefs precision to detail, timing and flow was such a treat. The service here was also amazing. My glass wasn't empty the entire three hours we stayed. And even though the menu was tiny, everything was so delicious from the oysters in the beginning to the herby pasta in the end. I had such a fantastic time here definitely will return next time I'm in town.
