Located in the Visitors' Centre of Natuurpunt (local nature preservation and information centre), Bar Bruis is the ideal starting and end point for walks, cycle tours and horseback rides in the nearby forest. Bar Bruis calls itself a (re)cycle bar by which they mean that they are bicycle- friendly and most of their furniture is for sale.
They serve a large variety of drinks incl. homemade lemonades, Pukka teas and a selection of local beers (e.g. from nearby Flurk brewery) as well as other Belgian beers like the famous Tripel Carmeliet (draught!). If you enjoy an espresso, cappuccino or a caramel latte, this is the right place as well.
Foodwise, they serve a variety of snacks, salads, meals and tapas as well as ice creams and homemade pastries. The carrot cake is delicous and so is the café glacé (vanilla ice cream mixed with espresso). The food is locally-sourced and the portion size excellent. The menu varies weekly with some fixed items like omelets, bitterballen and Bruis Boterham (Bruis club sandwich).
Kids will enjoy the visitors' centre, the outdoor area to play in or the toys inside. They have a big baby changing station and high chairs. They even have a shower!
Bar Bruis welcomes dogs and horses... Dogs are allowed inside and given water, horses have their own paddock outside.
I believe they have an upstairs area for approx. 45 people which can be rented for group activities such as seminars. They host company activities and parties etc.
Very friendly, multilingual staff.
Free Wifi.
Cash or card payments.
Indoor and outdoor seating.
They sell nice gifts and trinkets, many with a nature theme. Volunteers from Natuurpunt are often present to hand out free maps and answer all your questions about the surrounding area.
(They follow the corona guidelines from the Belgian government. The menu is written on big chalkboards, hand sanitizer is provided everywhere, staff wear mouthmasks, clients are asked to register etc.) read more
