We had a chat with someone at visitor info who said the Piazza Delle Erbe was the best place for an aperitivo... but when we walked through the square at that time, it was pretty quiet. We were a bit too early, clearly. We had a drink somewhere else, then made our way through the square and it was packed. We chose Bar Berto randomly, mainly because it was busy and yet had one nice table free near where we could watch all the passers-by.
I think this place is known for its beers, but we were doing campari spritzes and stuck with it as we perused the menu. We ordered a mozzarella di bufala appetizer and each had a pasta. Mine was the Genovese specialty - Trofie Pasta Genovese - and my dining companion ordered a ravioli dish. Both were excellent, but the Trofie was a revelation. Just drowning in the basil pesto and the pasta pieces were so unique and the texture so perfect. We loved our meal and the service was excellent. We were helped by two different young women who seemed like international students or travelers - seemed like English was their first language.
So glad we chose to luxuriate on the square - it was fun to people watch and be in such a lively place for a few hours. read more
