South Africans are like most migrants; they tend to stick together and tend to visit places that remind them of home. One such place is Bar Africa on the North Shore, a bar that serves good food and cold drinks. I joined a few of my mates for after work drinks, and very soon we started on the South African brews. Black Label and Castle for the boys and Savanah Dry for the girls, plus we topped it off with Springbok shooters. A good night was had by all, and the food was absolutely delicious. You get all the SA styled dishes, from boerewors rolls to massive burgers, portions made for an African sized hunger. In general the bar is inviting for young and old, and there is a great seating area outside, so it is good for a loud get together. I can recommend it if you are a lover of pub food and good easy fun. read more

I heard allot about this place so I had to try it out. Mixed results I'm afraid... The setting is great with a wide variety of food. Me and my family went on a Saturday afternoon for a late lunch. The place was relatively quiet with only two girls working at the time. We waited ten minutes to be served but eventually had to go to the bar for menus and to place our orders... The food arrived fast but unfortunately the main course came before the starter course. Food and portions was just OK and didn't live up to other South African restaurants. We ordered Donpetro's for desert but was informed 10 minutes later that they were out of ice cream... Not the best experience, maybe more of a pup/ bar than a family restaurant? read more

At first glance Bar Africa seems like a pretty cool place, it's got the normal staples for a summer bar on the North Shore, a sunny back patio, open plan tables and some booths around the outside of the main room. Two pool tables (that sometimes work)with low hanging lights that make you think there should be dogs playing poker nearby. There is a nice atmosphere during the evening and Thursday has a serving staff costume night (the last I saw seemed to be latex dominatrix night) the drinks are market prices, a little pricey but good quantity (big glasses) and the food .. Now .. let's talk about Food baby let's talk about You and me .. I've had delicious BBQ chicken, mediocre BBQ chicken and some pretty terrible burgers .. I'd recommend going during the evening when the cook is awake, we went during lunch and I experienced the mediocre chicken, I'm pretty sure it clucked the first time I put my fork into it and after that I struggled to find more BBQ sauce. In a nutshell 2 stars during the day (pub lunch) and 4 stars during an evening .. An average 3 stars. read more

Went to this place for dinner with my family. Has a very casual vibe about it and an awesome jungle theme that obviously aspires to the name with great outdoor seating with grass hut-type tables and wooden fences giving it a safari feel. I ordered the bbq chicken which was a half chicken with coleslaw, onion rings, salad and chips. A huge meal and considering I had eaten one hour earlier it was extremely unnecessary. It was, however, very delicious. The waitress was not very knowledgeable about the menu when we enquired about various things but she could have been new. There were two girls in bikinis walking around selling raffle tickets fundraising for someone's trip overseas, this was slightly uncomfortable as my family sat down for a nice dinner and there were girls my age walking around looking like they should be in a rap video.
