Structurally, it's unrecognisable compared to how it was when I was a pupil. Thanks to a massive grant, the entire school was pretty much rebuilt. It was much needed though, because Fortwilliam used to be one of those schools that was about 50% mobile classrooms (some of which had been around from the 1950s! Actually.) Now, it's a thoroughly modern school with all the amenities you could expect from a grammar school. I always found that the staff at the school really cared for the pupils, and as a result there was a real sense of community about the place. I'm sure some would disagree with me, but my experience was that I made some true friends there and was supported the whole way through my years there. Aw...I'm feeling all nostalgic now...must go set up a Fortwilliam Appreciation Society on Facebook!

My mother works here as a classroom assistant so I've been able to have a look around and i can say that the school is very nice and spacious on the inside now its been rebuilt, as things were a lot more cramped back in the day! What hasn't changed is the large tarmac play area where I spent many a happy lunchtime playing football. What parents care more about is the quality of teaching There are wonderful and caring teachers here who have been teaching for over 20 years in some cases, so there is real consistency of quality teaching. The school does regular enough trips for its students, and will make sure you are well prepared for the inevitable transition to the big bad world of secondary school!

The school has a bit of a mixed reputation now to be honest, since the long term principal left this place is said to have went to the dogs a wee bit but if you are considering sending your kids here you should call in and check the place out. Girls sports is maybe not the strongest in the older years though it appears to be improving. Principals here are always pretentious and often refer to the pupils as 'the cream of Belfast'. the 6th form centre is crampt but the school is currently being rebuilt so hopefully this will be greatly improved. the completion date is still unknownsupposedly it was 'meant' to be finished this year but really building has only just started and is a pain for pupils trying to concentrate as its quite noisy in classrooms close to the construction site. The majority of teachers are excellent and teach to a very high standard, and as much as I dislike the upcoming system and changes to education I would recommend this school to prospective students.
