Calling all metro Detroiters, the joy and delight that is boba (or bubble) tea can finally be procured in the area without driving to Ann Arbor. Madison Heights has several contenders for the bubble tea source of choice, and Bambu definitely appeals with its clean, supermodern interior and the wide selection of additions, fruit, and combinations you can use to adulterate a jasmine or black tea base. Bambu is a Vietnamese bubble tea place which opened in 2015, and they are part of a California franchise that is quite popular with my West Coast friends. I love the bright LCD menu screens. Eight popular drinks form a 'menu' in case you're looking to see what fellow customers prefer. For the newly initiated to the cult of boba, these offer a great starting point. The milky alchemy you're about to embark upon involves three steps: 1. Pick your base drink (black tea, for example) 2. Add preferred flavours (like taro) 3. Add flavour/type of boba (black tapioca bubbles are standard; flavoured lychee fruit is popular) They have a wide variety of standard flavours, though fewer than Detroit Bubble Tea and QQ. Some of my favourites, like strawberry lemonade, are not possible to make here. The bubble teas here aren't really smoothie or frozen texture, either, but more a true tea. You can ask for ice to be added. We ordered taro and strawberry drinks, and I went for the fruit salad che. The bubble tea was okay, pleasantly chilled and not badly mixed. The strawberry flavour suffered from a weirdly tart, almost metallic aftertaste. Not sure what caused that, but it was strong enough neither I or my beau could finish the drink, and that's a first. 2 stars; it was nicely made, but if I can't finish a beverage I paid $4 for, that's pretty sad. The taro had the same issue but milder, and my sister ranked her drink at 3 stars. Bambu differs from other shops having what they call 'dessert drinks.' They're actually "che," which means a drink with a lot of fruit, pudding, or other sweet components. These involve more complicated arrangements like a heap of snow cone ice, sliced up fruit (like longan, jackfruit, red tapioca, coconut meat, or lotus seeds). These are definitely chock-full of stuff that can get clogged up in a straw; you /need/ a spoon. The che cannot be drank. Don't try, or else you'll drink most of the liquid and leave behind a lot of fruit on stratified ice behind, which makes for a complete no go if you drive or need your hands. I'm at most a mixed fan of che, and this one was just so hard to eat. The straw wasn't big enough for the fruit, which kept getting stuck. There wasn't quite enough liquid to go with the fruit on a spoon, but there was too much ice. For $5+, this is definitely not for me. I'd rather have an ice cream cone or frozen fruit. PROTIP: They also serve a limited variety of baked goods if you have a sweet tooth, like macarons and cookies. VERDICT: 2.5 stars - clean, nice selection of classic bubble tea flavours and lots of lychees/boba, but expensive drinks with a funny aftertaste. Che really missed the mark. read more

This place certainly hit the spot! Close to home, I usually hit up QQ Bakery a mile away or Asian 168 Mart down the street, but I've always wanted to give this place a try. Well that, and I saw a LA based YouTuber vlog about Bambū on the West Coast. I've driven by this place countless times and did not know they were a chain. I walked in and I was quite surprised. The smell of roasted Oolong lingered throughout the cafe. Cute, quirky, colorful and quite clean interior, too! The menu was different from what I'm used to. It was heavily Vietnamese influenced drinks and had things like Vietnamese Coffee and flavored teas on the menu. Never saw these items at the usual places or even at chains like Coco or ChaTime in NYC. Nonetheless, I was even more ecstatic to get my drink on. It was a particularly hot day and cheat day (sorry, Diet. You can wait.) so I grabbed a Mango Smoothie. It was reminiscent of a Mango Lassie from the usual Indian restaurants. It was "lit". Yes, I use that word. The "barista" asked if I wanted any mix-ins. Yas. I say that word too. She scooped in a nice helping of Lychee jelly, my favorite. The smoothie itself had a hint of yogurt in it, adding in a depth of creaminess and tartness to balance out the sweetness of the fruit. It was pure joy. read more

Decided to stop by this place why I was out of town and thought this place would be a hidden gem. Well I walked in to order and the person behind the counter did not look happy and I felt pressured to order quickly. Having never been to a bubble tea place with so many options you'd think they would help me out so that I can tell what they actually have. I had to ask the girl behind the counter what everything was because there were no descriptions of what anything was. When I finally ordered it was a decent price and tasted really good. A Vietnamese chain that serves delicious bubble tea and drinks, Bambu is an often overlooked spot while driving down John R. But make no mistake in passing by possibly the only bubble tea spot worth visiting in Michigan. To preface - be prepared to spend $4-$6 on a drink. However, definitely be adventurous in the toppings and flavors you try out. I personally enjoy a cold Almond Milk Tea with regular and bursting boba. They also serve macarons and a pandan waffle freshly prepared. The cafe seats around 20 so don't bring large crowds - especially since the parking lot is small. However, it's definitely worth a drink - especially after getting pho at the next door Vietnamese restaurant. read more

This is my number one favorite tea place. They have large line of tea, shake and other beverages. My favorites are the regular Thai tea and the Coconut tea. I ask for the regular bubba and mango burst with the Thai Tea and regular bubba and Lychee burst with the Coconut tea. Their teas are rich in flavor compared to other tea places around. read more

Best milk tea in Michigan! I finally came here and fell in love. They have a pretty big selection of drinks ranging from flavored milk teas, smoothies and their specialties. I had the honeydew milk tea with lychee jelly and my hubby had the honeydew milk tea with boba. The drink was flavorful and not too icy. Some places make their bubble teas watery and you can barely taste the flavor but this was delicious!!! We came here on a rainy Sunday afternoon and it was busy. I could understand why this place is so popular because their bubble tea is spot on! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone and everyone. Try the honeydew milk tea sometime. I have to say this is the BEST boba place Michigan offers. I was so excited when I know it is opening in Michigan. This is a franchise store in multiple location including California. As a Californian/authentic Taiwanese, this boba place definitely live up to California standard. It offers a great variety of drink. This is a Vietnamese dessert place, therefore, it offers a great variety of Vietnamese dessert drink. When I come here, i usually get its Oolong milk tea or Jasmine Milk Tea. You can pick up to 3 toppings without extra charge. I usually choose egg pudding and boba/pearl. It also offers other topping such as lychee jellies, crystal boba, other types of fruit jellies, etc. I am so happy that Michigan finally has a authentic boba place. read more

The bubble tea itself is perhaps one of the better finds around Michigan. When made right, the flavor is accurate and the boba has good texture and consistency. They also allow you to mix and match 2 toppings, which is an added bonus. The reason for my 1 star review is due to the consistency. On multiple occasions, the tea was made super sweet or super diluted. The place will remake the tea for you but with attitude. With the most recent visit, I was there with a group of friends so they caught that one of the workers had "flipped" me off behind my back because I stated that the tea was too sweet. Later that night, I had really bad stomach pains. I'm not sure what they did to my tea but I'm afraid of going back there after I had "insulted" the workers there saying that the tea was too sweet. I don't know what their problem is; I just wanted to enjoy a good bubble tea but the sheer coincidence that the rude attitude I received and the worst abdominal pains thereafter pushes me to believe that perhaps it was not mere coincidence. Nevertheless, I create only a sample size of one and it could have been something that I ate earlier that day; I think it is, however, prudent to let others know that this was my experience in case others had similar experiences. read more

I often buy Bambu Special here but the last few times it has been stale, seems like they have been stored for a long time. The last time I tried again, I asked to remove the ice separately, repeat and repeat again but when they brought it out it was still dipped in it. And the Bambu Special is still stale. This place is the bees knees. I had an amazing thai iced tea, as well as a fresh sugar cane juice made out front with fresh squeezed tangerine. It was beautiful, delicious, pleasing to the palette and the eyes. My friends got some more creative drinks (A mango passion fruit something or other, and a taro lover.) - Absolutely awesome! There's a credit card minimum or you get charged. A drink is 5 to 6 dollars. How many drink does a normal person drink? One. Not worth the price if you have to pay extra a drink. The drink isn't even that good. Boba is rare in Michigan but at least make it decent. read more

Depending on what you are getting there, it can range from a 2 stars to a 4 stars (hence the 3 stars in this review). Moved from California, my husband and I have been searching around for a good Boba (bubble) tea place that we can get our favorite drink. We found this place by accident and have been back a few times. After trying a few things on the menu, my conclusion is that don't go off from the Che menu. Any drink on that part of the menu are great...but other, not so much. Taro milk tea has always been my favorite and after trying that once here at Bambu, I decided to not get that from here ever again. I was so excited to see this shop pop up after hearing from West Coast friends about the delicious drinks. I ordered the Mango Yogurt Smoothie and #2 (lots of sweetened beans, tapioca, pudding, and jellies topped with coconut milk). The drinks were delicious albeit a bit hard to drink/chew. I also got the Pandan Waffle and it was pretty good - I've never had Pandan before and was so intrigued by the texture and color. The space is pretty sparse - this is mostly a grab and go place. They offer macaroons as well as papaya salad. The menu for the drinks is pretty extensive. The downside is that the prices are pretty steep - at $4.50 but I'm also used to paying under $2.00 for drinks like this in Asia. read more

I'm from Texas so I was happy to see a Vietnamese dessert joint opened in Michigan! Let's start off with how small the parking lot is. :( yeah it's definitely tiny lol. If you're trying to find this place, don't worry you won't miss it. The Bambu sign is green and HUGE. Inside the place, it's nicely decorated with a modern looking theme. The menu had a lot of options to choose from. If you have no idea what dessert drink to get, they do have pictures of the dessert drinks. My favorite is #10! In my opinion, it's not too sweet. The dessert drink have all these different combinations in it (jelly, coconut, etc). I believe some people might not like it because they're not used to it. But hey, it's a Vietnamese dessert drink and that's what we love! For $4.50(?), it's not too pricey for a dessert drink. So, if you're still spending $4+ for Starbucks but wanting to try something new, then definitely check this place out :). read more

I like their dessert drinks, but their bubble tea is somewhat mediocre. Their taro bubble tea barely had sweetness, but on the plus side, they give lots of tapioca pearls. I asked for no ice for two of my drinks but I still got ice. Good thing the ice wasn't that much though. read more

So after months of lying to the general public about when they are going to open, Finally, FINALLY FINALLY they open, 3 months later. That's ok, because I was like "WTF is Bambu anyways? Never heard of this sh*t before". Anyways they are a dessert/smoothie only place. Here's my 2 cents. Pros: +Lots of Asians there. I feel like I'm back in the motherland. +Lots of drinks there. +Tastes fresh +The texture of the various toppings inside the #10 Bambu special is very unique. Cons: -#10 bambu special a little too sweet for me. I honestly don't know what to say about a place like this. It's unique, that's for sure. Someone found a niche and filled it, and is seriously banking out of it. Somehow they found the area where lots and lots of Asian congregate, and gave us all something we wanted. I do miss all the bubble tea/Che places I can easily go to when I'm In SoCal and was excited to find this place. Really good bubble tea! I would definitely come back if I'm in the area. I had a jasmine milk tea with black boba, and my boyfriend got a kiwi strawberry smoothie with black boba. We enjoyed both! The space is bright and has a decent amount of seating. They have an overwhelming amount of choices when it comes to flavors and add-ins (jelly, beans, pearls, tapioca, pudding, etc.) They offer teas/milk teas, coffees, smoothies, yogurt blends, and juices. Best boba tea cafe! Hands down. I really love the different options and flavors. Since it's a Vietnamese spot, they serve Vietnamese coffee drinks which are probably the best I've ever had. Instead of cream or milk, they use condensed milk to make them. LOVE! Also, really great desserts served here. I get a macaroon or two every time I come through.
