We had friends originally from Italy who used to always host us for apertivo-type meals, and we've always enjoyed the concept of plentiful variety, instead of just a main entree. There were a couple of places we saw serving up even a greater variety of food, but we really liked the balance of quality, quantity, and presentation of the setup in Neaera, coupled with its nice quaint outdoor seating area. Pricing was phenomenal! The drink photo I posted equated to about $8 USD, which included the all-you-can-eat buffet. It was about an additional $1USD to add on the buffet as if the drink itself for about $7USD wasn't already a deal. What an absolute steal, especially when compared to what this would cost in San Francisco! Of course, given the bargain-basement price, this is far from high-end food, and I'm pretty sure they're not using fresh homemade artisanal pasta, but definitely a good variety of tasty food. Lots of pasta, fresh veggies, and all tasty. Just don't come expecting meat dishes. At least they weren't serving any meat last night. However, we've gone to similar apertivo buffets in Spain where there were charcuterie and freshly baked chicken being served. What a fun way to have a nice little economical dinner! I've yet to see anything even close to being on par in terms of quantity and quality at similar pricing at any happy hour in the San Francisco Bay Area!!

They had a TV set up outside, so our decision was made. Ambiance (4.5/5): Like most restaurants in Italy, al fresco dining is offered. And it's the way to go. A good number of tables were set up outside. Since the dining here is right on the sidewalk and it's on a busy street, you get a steady stream of people who walk by. While we sat outside, the inside was nice too with modern, fresh decor and a nice bar. Service (3/5): Standard European service. Not terribly attentive and slow but comparable to other bars/restaurants. Drinks (4.5/5): They have a good list of beer, wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic beverages. Italy is known for Aperol spritz. Campari spritz is popular too. Cynar spritz? Never heard of it but it was on the menu. I'm always down to try something new so I gave this spritz with artichoke liqueur a try. It wasn't my favorite but I'm glad I tried it. Too bitter for my taste. Even more bitter than Campari. Food (3.5/5): When we started off with some cocktails, they brought us some complimentary snacks to munch on (potato chips and mini breadsticks). Always a nice touch and something I appreciate about dining in Italy. I also ordered a panini with mortadella, sun-dried tomatoes, and a soft Italian cheese. Bologna, naturally, is where bologna (or mortadella in Italian) was created. So you definitely have to try it if you're visiting! The sandwich was tasty and the price was reasonable. You can always get sandwiches and pizza in Italy at an affordable rate. Overall: Caffe Maxim is a great spot for happy hour that I would hit up regularly if I was living in Bologna!
