I attended my first federal sentencing today, a drive of four hours to the troubled city of…read moreBaltimore to show support for a friend. I rented a car from my Entetprise buddies, he rented a large bus and catered lunch for all attendees coming from NC, VA, PA, and more, our crowd was incredibly diverse. Jews, black, white, spanish, miscellaneous religions. To be part of the growing, true as the tide, we were one, we are here in the halls of justice, full of us that want to be served so well. Well, dont we? The building is an omnious structure, it looks like a place that you might not leave from once you go inside with federal marshals ready to move you through security checks, looking us over carefully. The Government presented its case, my friends attorney counter punched the statements of facutal misrepresentations. There was a lot of money involved in a short time, to the tune of millions of dollars in a few months. The presiding judge was "kept busy for days" reading all the defendants materials that were stacked high upon his desk and the wood creaked as the stacks of paperwork continued to pile up. My friend plead "guilty" and it seemed that the judge struggled imposing the heavy sentence as he was looking at thirty years, he received one year and one day, incarceration facility wherever he wants to in New York. Why? Because my friend built a church, he built a school, he "touched the lives of tens of thousands" picking up medical bills for employees and their families, writing checks to the community in excess of six figures a year which could not be denied. Yes, he caught a year in the federal pen, but it sure beats thirty.

There is regularly a drunken hobo in the corner of the ground-floor computer lab. We'll call him…read moreLarry, though that's almost certainly not his real name. Based on my last two visits to this lab, I'd speculate that Larry spends his days in a sort of blissful haze, watching youtube metal videos on his ear buds and rocking out. Larry is swell. He has a habit of singing aloud when headbanging isn't enough to get the juices flowing. There is lots of headbanging. The staff members love Larry, as do I. When Larry walks in, you can see their smiles broadcasting a message of adoration. "Please, add some spice to our otherwise dull academic lives," they seem to say. **** Once in awhile, one of the students will go over to Larry, tap him on the shoulder and ask him something. I can never quite hear the question over the music, but I assume it's a request for the details of Larry's exploits as a roadie. Being the humble guy that he is, he always politely waves them away. I dream about being Larry some nights. The sensuous weight of four rings on my right hand while I fist pump to AC DC. The thrill of pouring lighter fluid on my air guitar and wailing "goooooood niiiiiiight Cleeeeeeeeeveland" for an adoring audience of weekend scholars. The luscious aroma of an all-slim-jim diet. **** Other nights, I just dream of being at a real university -- perhaps a place where the library stays open until midnight all week, the student union doesn't close at 4 p.m. and an undergrad can work on his assignment in relative peace, thanks to library staffers who actually do their jobs overseeing their more colorful visitors. Until then, I have Larry for entertainment. Rock on, Larry. Rock on.

This is a great university library with a great selection of books!read more
