Pork Meatball stuffed with Broccoli and Cheddar
Von A.

Normally I could handle 2 balls ... until I came here. These are big balls for sure to keep you satisfied even with just one stuffed hunk of meat. I got pork meatball stuffed with broccoli and cheese - the cheese didn't ooze out like I had anticipated, but overall this place packs a mean meatball. The gravy here is also pretty darn good, a lil loose and not thick - but pairs well especially if you get it with a mashed potato side.

Nice place to grab a filling meal near Grand Place. I was starving after taking the train to Brussels, and pretty overwhelmed with all the restaurants around Grand Place. Meatballs sounded hearty and I love the name of this restaurant so I went for it. The waitress who took my order explained how everything here is farm fresh, and patiently answered all the questions I had about what to order. I started with the bitterballen, a fried meatball with a meaty-gravy filling, and they were SO GOOD. Crunchy outside, warm smooth center. The mustard it came with added a nice tang. For the main I ordered the small pork meatballs with a side of stoemp (mashed potatoes). This was a massive portion that I couldn't finish. The meatballs were good, not super flavorful but they were cooked well. The mashed potatoes were tasty, and tasted unique with the additions of carrots and other veggies. The gravy tied everything together nicely. I wasn't blown away by the food but it was a very satisfying meal. The service was great, and there are tables outside facing the square so it's also great for people watching. Overall, a yummy place for meatballs.

Balls and Glory is a meatball shop specializing in meatballs. I ordered a Witbier to sip on while I waited. These meatballs take about 20 minutes to make so sit tight. Beer is light and balanced with coriander and citrus flavor. Solid beer. I went with a classic bacon and chervil meatball. It was brought to me atop a mound of stoemp, which is sitting in a shallow pool of gravy. Exterior of the meatball seems to be lightly crusted and fried, lending a nice crunch on the exterior of the meatball. The meatball is huge, tender and juicy. I split that mug down the center, to find an oozing core. I can't say I've ever seen molten core on a meatball. But mild flavor here. Don't expect a salty, crispy, smokey bacon flavor. As someone who prefers chewier, mild Canadian bacon I found this appealing. In addition to the brown gravy was a coconut cream sauce. It provided a sweet, fruity, creamy, nutty complexity when consumed in tandem with the stoemp, meatball and brown gravy. Brown gravy has a fruity, slight alcohol note that lends a great complexity. Mash potatoes or stoemp have new potato taste. Carrots and celery in there for complexity. Balls and glory gets a solid recommendation.

Yelp 100 challenge 2020 #13 So I learned that the meatballs are not my favorite. That in itself was a bummer because I heard that was one of the foods I needed to try in Belgium. So that defeats the purpose of this place considering it is a meatball store. However, their stoemp is amazing! And I liked the vibe of the restaurant. Would I go back? No, but that's only because these meatballs just weren't for me. If you're a meatball fanatic and you know you like the Belgian ones, then this place is for you!

We first saw this restaurant in Ghent and wanted to try it before leaving, but it was closed on our last day. They offer nothing but stuffed meatballs served with stoemp (mashed potatoes with vegetables) and even farm their own meat - that's SERIOUS farm to table. I've never even heard of a restaurant like this anywhere. Had to give it a go. It was quite good for meatballs, but not as special as advertised. I ordered the chervil and bacon pork meatball. The meat is baked to a nice consistency and served with your choice of stoemp or salad. I had the couscous salad, that I found to be on the bland side. Not a fan of ice berg lettuce in a salad. My wife had the stroganoff pork meatball. It was stuffed with a tomato sauce. The stoemp was not much more than mashed potatoes. They give you a number after you order, grab a seat, and they bring the food to you. I really enjoyed the free water and free fruits. They charge for everything in Europe so it's sorta nice to get a restaurant that gives free water with lemon & mint!

This is the best spot to try the infamous Brussels meatballs! It prides itself on farm fresh meat and ingredients. Fast food but slow cooked. The portions are a great size and very delicious! They mix up the flavors so there is always something new and different to try. Highly recommend! The owner is usually running around, waiting tables and helping out. Very friendly and personable!

Had the seasonal ball, loved it. Great service, excellent vibe, sweet location. Stoemp is really delicious. Ginger lemonade was also on point.

Mediocre food that took about 45 minutes.

Mediocre food for too much money & super long waits. Free lemon water was nice. Free fruits on table is an interesting concept (but probably not worth the 45% extra charge for eating in). I tried 4 meatballs - the classic pork with bacon & chervil, the seasonal pork with sundried tomatoes, chicken with tikka masala, and the small ball with mushrooms & truffles. None of the flavors were that great.

Pork with Chevril and Bacon.

Overpriced and touristy. Service was eh. One ball and a side was 18 euros. Needed more to be hungry. Had to order another ball for 8 euros.

While the register states No Cards one of the servers told the table next to mine not worry when they didn't have enough euros. Only a drink menu was provided and the dishes being served that day were handwritten on moveable boards or posted on the wall. I had on my list a couple to try but finally went with the Belgian carbonades à la biere which was beef stew with mashed potatoes in a dark gravy made with beer. The plate was quite generous and much appreciated since I devoured it. I enjoyed the creaminess of the potatoes swirled with gravy but the meat could've been a tad bit more tender. Service was good. I think everyone on the floor stopped by my table for one reason or the other. Ambiance was casual and looked like many people were taking their time over their meals. When finished you need head to the register to settle the tab. I paid in cash. Worth a return visit.

Ah.. the Belgian experience. If you're familiar with it, you probably appreciate its peculiarities…read more If you're not, well why pass by a country and not try "local" as the kids like to call it these days. I've never seen a country handle potatoes better than Belgium and I've tried fries overseas. Trust me when I tell you that there's a technique to it that many countries do not master, unfortunately. Now, the Belgian experience.... You need a restaurant called a taverne. A place where the "menu of the day" might be a grandmother's vol-au-vent, stoemp with sausage or another variety. You'll need lots of-and I mean- lots of beer; the classics and the crafts for the more modern folk. You wouldn't want to miss the one thing that make tavernes so recognizable: the deep green over deck that covers you when the inevitable Belgian rain comes pouring down. It's lovely how many different faces you'll see at restaurants like these. It ranges from groups of women grabbing a cup of coffee while bikering about whether or not one of them should call off her wedding. A huge family that had to have a family meal right there and then with the rowdy kids to match or couples, that desired to create intimate bonds through the one thing they'll always agree on: good food. Does it matter that the sauce that accompanied the duck had way too much alcohol in it for my taste? Or that the over deck was a tad bit too short , which caused half of my body to be wet from the rain? Or that this place wasn't that special but I liked it anyway? Because when I look back, the tad bits of "just good enough " that I found at Dynasty created a moment that I cherish in my heart.

Once you've entered Place St. Catherine, you're completely out of the main tourist district which is nice if you want something more authentic as opposed to overpriced and themepark-like. Viva M'Boma is small, clean and has an understated elegance in its simplicity. It's apparent once you see the menu that you are there to experience something you wouldn't normally get at most places that label themselves food-centric (they specialize in organs). Not only is the menu eclectic; they deliver hard core with flavors that are savory, intense and exquisite. For the starter we had Kirr with cassis as an aperitif that accompanied an order of pan-seared calf's brain in a beef boullion with onion and garlic, and a fois gras in a very traditional presentation. Both were outstanding and a good prelude of what was to come. We placed the second order once we finished our starters so that we could carefully select the next delicious offering as there were so many awesome things to choose from. I was tempted by the Pot-au-feu, essentially a stew of beef cheeks, oxtail and marrow, but was swayed by the waitress to the solomillo of horse, cooked blue and with a glass of St. Emilion. Yep, it was incredible! The meat was cooked expertly and the pairing showed of a true professional. My better half had veal cheeks that were stewed in beer and fell apart when you so much as touched them with the fork. This dish exploded with flavor and left us wanting to lick the plate after it was done. We finished the evening off with a house-made speculoos ice-cream (gingerbread) and caramelized apples... Pretty F'n awesome! We really enjoyed the experience, hospitality and knowledge of this establishment. We never felt rushed and all our questions were answered kindly and consummately.
