Regal is the best way to describe it and when you get all dressed up you fit right in :-) Acoustics are great, the seats also well set so you can see the stage well and we loved our first experience here. Hard to believe we had not visited here before. A venue for opera, ballet, concerts and symphony they have a series of things on throughout the year. It is a historic opera house, home of the Bavarian State Opera, Bavarian State Orchestra and the Bavarian State Ballet. We went to see the performance of Ana Karenina by Tolstoy as a ballet performed by the Bavarian State Ballet and it was an amazing experience. Would come back here for more anytime. It's a beautiful theatre with such luxurious surroundings :-)

The crowd is both high-brow and deeply passionate (watch out when Edita Gruberova sings... these well-heeled Müncheners will scream like its a rock concert). While the productions follow the current European trends ("Regietheater" aka "Eurotrash"), the performers themselves span from veteran legends to the hot and up-and-coming. At the interval, don't miss the lovely buffet downstairs, and be sure to try the hedonistic "Rote Grütze" (red summer berries drenched in vanilla sauce). You certainly won't find that at the Met!

With a choir of only local people - many not professionally trained, but with beautiful voices and a love for opera, they present a classical music festival every year since 1997. We saw recently the Magic flute for kids, nicely shortened, but the stage setting was.... I'd say not kid compatible but way to modern for them to fully get it. But the real reason for the so so review is actually the super unprofessional catering / service. Before the opera, we went to the first bar and a guy, arms crossed just stared at me before informing me that I may talk to him. Still to get the order completely was complicated and in the end required me to help pour the Prosecco (an order of 2 white wine, 1 Prosecco, a large water with gas and several glasses). During the break they had a weird Asian buffet out - and some Italian antipasti/ salads. Which was interesting as the lady I spoke to the week before informed me that there is no food at all at kids shows. Mayhem broke out when the set up was pay for your plate and then load it with hot and cold stuff. as the pay / pick plate station was in between the cold and hot stuff you could imagine how orderly that was with several hundred people coming in. When we later on left the opera early (see above, not kid friendly stage) and asked whether they still had some cake, we were just told: No. You can leave now. Bottom line: BYOB and food.

This is a fine and engaging venue for classical performances. The clever and avante-garde design…read moreadds visual appeal but also creates a sense of an intimate venue while seating a large audience. There might not be a bad seat in the whole place. The seats, by the way, are deeply padded bent-ply with wide armrests (wide enough to share). You will be comfortable here. Food and beverages are available but expensive. I tried the Proseco with Hibiscus Blood. It was terrific. The acoustics are curious. Compared to the lush, warm sound of the Munich Opera House, the sound here is crisp and detailed - perhaps a little bit too crisp and too detailed. The higher registers seems to explode through the room. Sometimes this gives life and punch to the music, but at other times it is the aural equivalent of shining a bright fluorescent light on the Mona Lisa. It must be an unforgiving place for the performers, too. The downside is that the venue itself is not an experience. Historic venues like the Opera House are themselves a feast for the mind and the senses. This venue is about presenting the performance as vividly and clearly as possible - here it succeeds admirably.
