I've been to France on the odd occasion, and I must say that every time I was in a Parisian bakery I'd think to myself "Wow, this feels a lot like Blackburn." That's not entirely true, but Blackburn and France are joined with a wonderful bakery serving the most delicious french pastries and more. Wit both owners as pastry chefs, you wont find a better place in a good ten kilometres of here. The only problem I've had every time I go it "What to have?" which often leads to "What to have first?" Vanilla slice with delicious flaky pastry. Tarts. Meringues. Eclairs. Cheesecakes. Truffles. The list goes on. For those after a more savoury selection, there is also pasties, quiches and pies. All bits are made fresh daily on the premises, so the best time to come is mid morning for the best selection available. Come any later and you may miss out. The coffee is a wonderful strong addition to the sugary sweetness of the pastries, and all the energy will keep you going until your next meal.

We got the plain pies to give it a fair, comparable test, and I must say, they really are very very good! The flavour of the filling is really good, very nice short crust base, and a suitably flaky top. In fact, the short rust base would have to be one of the best. I do think, though, to be fair, it is slightly pipped by the Kirra Bakery's pie, which as a slightly better, flakier top. But it is certainly the best pie in Melbourne, and one of the best in Australia :-)

For one it has a sandwich bar for those who don'y see flaky pies and pastries in their immediate lunch time future. But the main reason I drop by the Lower Plenty bakehouse in my last minute pre-Christmas panic is to experience Christmas flavoured delight in the form home made mince pies. They come in teams of six and will cause you to banish those generic brand 'mince' pies from your home. The mince has real fruit and peel and the sweet frosting is a nice alternative to yet more pastry. YUM. I can't wait for December to roll (bakery pun anyone?) around!

They create a very impressive fruit flan, the small version which would serve 4-6 is only $15.00! Also a must try is their classic Eugenie sponge cake, available in chocolate or vanilla, so light with layers of chantilly custard cream & strawberries, topped with waves of chocolate and surrounded with chunky almond pieces, simply delicious! Arnold's also have a large selection of items to order for Christmas, puddings, fruit mince tarts, chocolate & almond Christmas trees, gingerbread houses, stollen, Christmas cookies. I…read morehadn't realised it has been over 8 months since I was in the lane, and so this made a big impression on me. Strolling through Hosier is always a new experience, with ever-changing graffiti art, but this was certainly a bigger experience. I was served by two lovely girls, sold a tasty latte, took some photos within the little shop, and entertained by a young man blowing bubbles. Hosier was missing something. Now it is found. Not only can you buy a good hot coffee, but you also help to raise funds for people in need, on the streets, something that is quite concerning to me. I wish them all the best with this venture. I can't see how it couldn't be a success because of the tourists and general public who pass through Hosier every day.
