I was feeling a bit beaten down by the urban sprawl so taking advantage of my school holiday I…read morerandomly chose brazoria for a visit. It did not disappoint at all!! I read online that the best time to visit is around dusk or dawn, but we only managed to make it around 2pm, so we decided to head on to Galveston and come back around dusk. It's quite remote so be sure to fuel up (nearest gas station is around 20 miles away). Around 2pm we drove thru the gate and after driving about 3 miles we encountered the discovery center. We got out and walked around. There is a paved hiking path around the discovery center which takes you through some of the freshwater marshland and a "songbird hike". The paved path disappears after a few hundred feet and you are left to bushwhack through the remainder of the hiking path. Because of the heat (most of this area is in direct sun) and aggressive mosquitos we turned around after the paved area and went back to the car. However, the calls of many songbirds were audible. From this point you can keep driving and go on the auto tour, pay attention to the signage which directs you into the 7mile auto tour loop. You can pull off at any time on the auto tour to get out and enjoy the view! Because the road here is not paved, I don't recommend driving faster than 10 mph as that kicks up a lot of dust which gets all over your car. At the end of the tour, you can check out "Roger's pond" which is a brackish pond. The highlight of the tour is the salt marshes which you can see around the first couple miles of the loop. After Roger's pond, you have to turn around, then you can take the refuge exit paths to leave the refuge. The gates to the refuge close at dusk and open at dawn-- we cut it close on our return trip and left around 7:30, but we were still able to escape successfully. We saw a lot more wildlife in the salt marshes upon our return, including lots of roseate spoonbills and egrets. However there were a lot of mosquitos at dusk so definitely wear long pants and long sleeves to avoid being eaten up!

There was a little guy under the boardwalk right next to the parking and picnic area and lots of large gators on the driving tour. Highly recommend saying hi... just be respectful and don't approach or try to feel them.

Steve started to chum and said, "Hopefully, the fish will start coming within an hour." He obviously knew his stuff because were were reeling in monster red drum after monster red drum within the hour. We also caught 3 Atlantic Sharpnose Sharks! We had 3 children on the boat as well and Kevin & Steve are great with families. I've been on other charters where the captains were crude and profane in front of my children, but Kevin & Steve were classy from start to finish. Thank you to Kevin & Steve for an absolutely incredible morning on the water and for making a fish memory that will last a lifetime.

Captain Kevin called me early in the morning of our scheduled afternoon trip. The waters were too rough & wind was bad: he initially cancelled our trip for ALL of our behalves. Turns out, the next day booking cancelled. He called us back to reschedule the trip or to refund our deposit. The timing was right: It was better conditions and we had the time, so we jumped at the rescheduling opportunity! Fishing: what a good guide knows best! Surfside Beach Charters know where to go to catch fish! (I have no intention to slam anyone else, but it's really cool when you pull in & here that "other" charters didn't do or fair as well as we did!) Your capt will ask you your goals and do his best to meet your goals & exceed your expectations. But always know, THEY nor WE are not always able to achieve ALL expectations...that part is up to the fish and the conditions. Our day wasn't the best for some fish, but for others it rocked! Family fishing: 2 parents & 2 kids... our kids were seasick the majority of the time: 1 never saw a fish caught (puking or eyes closed, wishing he stayed home); the other reeled in a few fish, but was reeling over the side of the boat for other reasons! "Sea bands" don't work worth a flip, FYI. I took Dramamine too late (1 hr prior to trip, as directed): be sure to take it at least 3-4 hrs in advance (I was fine for the 2nd half of our trip). Captain Kevin was SO sweet during the wretchedness: he slowed the boat for big waves, did his best maneuvering the waters to minimize "ugliness" (choppy day out there for us!), drove fast when he could, fished "for me" when I needed to gather my composure, and handed over the rod when I was ready...Captain Kevin is da bomb! Saltwater fishing charters are not cheap, but the experience with a solid outfit is worth every penny! Included in the price is filleting your fish caught, and wonderful bounties await as they filled our bellies (with plenty more to come!): Freshly caught fish = the best fish you will ever eat! Be sure to tip your captain well, especially for a successful adventure ($50 = goals achieved; more for "blew my mind awesome!"). We absolutely recommend Surfside Beach Charters for guided saltwater fishing charters: you'll catch fish, you'll be treated professionally/down-to-earth/"real", you have experienced captains, your accommodations are "sea-worthy", you'll be eating well, and the experience is priceless! The bayou it sits on houses Reds and is a short paddle or ride from the dock to good Redfish territory. Hey there early on the weekend because the launch line gets long, the snack area opens early so you can buy snacks, drinks and ice before your trip...no need to stop at Bucees! Lol

It was a super slow day. We caught two flounders which were too small to keep and a handful of sheepshead. Only two were big enough to keep. We wasted half the trip driving around to worthless spots and even had to stop mid trip and go back for bait because he didn't have enough. We were quoted $275 for the spring special over the phone and then charged $375. It's my husband fault for not getting the booking rate in writing. We ended up paying Josh's regular rate because the girl wasn't there to confirm. Overall we had a good time, but if we pay good money to charter a trip, at least give us a guide that knows the routes. I knew it would be a bust when 5 minutes in Josh says he only does off shore trips. If we ever try Cowboys again we will have Josh take us offshore. We liked him personally but he wasn't equipped or knowledgeable about the bay side like he was offshore.
