You walk down the old steps and the air changes cooler, darker, with the scent of wood and whiskey soaked into the walls. It feels honest, like a place built for men and women who have seen enough of the world to appreciate something simple and true. The story on the wall tells of Prohibition and rumrunners, of Mary Murphy and the river that once hid her secrets. You can still feel that in the glass you hold. The On a Yacht bourbon cocktail has the right burn, softened with mint and peach, the kind that lingers like a good memory. The Blackberry Bramble is bright and sharp, a summer night in a tumbler. You don't come to Murphy's for polish or pretense. You come because it feels alive, because the ghosts of the past sit quietly beside you, raising a glass in approval. A tavern like this doesn't chase the world it waits for those who still know how to listen.

It has a cavernous main taproom (that is 21+) and a family friendly side room with big garage doors that open up in nicer weather. It has an awesome motto, perhaps the best I've ever seen of a brewery: "It's your party. Our goal is to be invited back." The place has a bit of corporate, private equity firm vibe to it; you can tell a lot of money went into its creation (its founders are both former NYC corporate executives). But it is clean and spacious with friendly bartenders, giant TVs perfect for watching sports, and most importantly: good beer. My girlfriend and I visited on a Saturday afternoon in July. I counted 18 beers on tap, plus one hard seltzer and a variety of NA beers and sodas and an iced tea. Of the 18 beers, 6 were German themed. We tried a flight and enjoyed what we had, and bought a four pack to bring home with us. There were many styles represented, including IPAs, lagers, pilsners, sour beers, a Belgian Tripel, but notably no dark beers like stouts or porters. Overall a nice place with good beer that we would definitely return to.

The place seems clean and organized as well. The masala fries and the Paneer Basket appetizer from the specials menu were great. The flavor was good on the Fusion Chicken Wings - the drums were crispy and the meat was soft, but the skin on the flats wasn't crispy, and the meat was slightly chewy. For both rounds, my friend's Mango Cart beer was poured with excessive foam at the top that settled down to a shallow pour. Other than those small issues, this place is nice for a liquor store bar!

Since I read such reviews about the place being in need of a good cleaning and other not so good things, I was actually pleasantly surprised when I found it not to be as skeevy as I'd expected. The bartender was nice looking, friendly, and made a great drink. Wonderful cosmo! The DJ was playing great music.. great old New Brunswick college town vibes with the pool table and Rutgers paraphernalia around. I wasn't too happy about the downstairs area where they put on the shows.. it seemed like an old church basement, just sorta bootleg. They said that they remodeled, so not certain how it was before.
